A crap roadie is far fitter than a crap MTBer. Basically there is nowhere to hide being unfit.

Are you serious? Riding a road bike is a steady effort with troughs and peaks, MTBing runs on consistently higher heart rates with no place to hide (no peleton to cruise in etc.)

Not knocking the fitness of road riders (I do it myself), but mile for mile MTBing is far more intensive!!!

Here’s some of the review I just posted for the Boardman Team I picked up for my son in law 2 weeks ago…

On the flip side, please ensure you get your bike checked by someone more competent than the average Halfords spanner jockey. Mine had a loose headset, incorrectly indexed gears, 16 psi in the front tyre, loose stem, and the seat post slid down as soon as I sat on it creating a horrendous gouge in my shiny new post;-(

I checked everything except the seat collar

Jason, seen that on the on-one site, bearings easily bought?

    Handy enough fitted?

    Cheers

Off the top of my head 6905’s will check for you!

I bought this and replace the bearings when needed!

I believe they’re the same as Superstar’s which is cheaper but I could be wrong!

I thought the numbers on Shimano’s just represent the level of quality so bb71=Deore/SLX and bb91=XT/R. Could be wrong on this but as long as you have 89.5 or 92mm bb then either should fit and you could run the SLX crank.

    As for reliability – I think they’re all c**p.

Hope do a £90 one and CK reportedly have one coming out.

Had one for a couple of years great do it all bike used 120 rebas to drop the weight and sharpen up the handling a bit. Never had a problem with the drop outs. Always wondered if you could slide them back far enough to get a 29″ wheel in.

I suspect 27.5 would go in and not mess Geometry too much!

    It doesn’t just rain….
Can’t you ring UPS, give them a sob story and get them out tomorrow? They do have vans running on a Saturday! Alternatively see if you can collect them.

2012 Rebas can go to 80, but not up to 120, I believe 2011 can go up but could be wrong. What year do you have?
(I would also presume that if there are no markings for 120mm then the forks won’t go to that.

Crikey – I have 2 specialized toupe saddles one in 130 and the other 143, I can sit on the 130 for any length of time and have done 100 mile sportives on it, yet the 143 has my ariss numb and painful and me crying in 15 min or so, could you explain why this is?

    Thanks

I’d heard that these kind of sprays are great for killing of stanchions as the dust/dirt to mix with the oil and form a nice grinding paste. Would be happy to hear that this is not true though.

    This is not true!

Clean Stanchions, apply SILICONE lube (not GT85, WD40 or TF2 whatever it is), cycle fork a few times, wipe off excess – simples!

Cleaning/lubing stanchions should be part of your cleaning/maintenance schedule

I have the flats on my anthem 29 and I weigh quite a heft amount and am fairly aggressive with them…

No problems, and very little noticeable flex.

I have Superstar/Sentinels and they are great. No problems with the free hub, rims are fairly light and good looking.

Have you thought about a Boardman? I’ve got a Boardman Team Carbon that I’m going to be selling in the next or two. As new really, SRAM Rival, Mavic Ayskiums. Size large.

Do you take BTW certificates

I believe there is 40gm difference between SLX and XT. I wouldn’t bother with the Sram as it’s a faff to get right the Shimano’s are far easier!
So choose between the shimano’s (imo SLX )

I didn’t think Crests had a weight limit, just Stan’s wheels sets!
Crests would be fine as long as the wheels are built well, I weigh more than you and mine have been no problem at all!

Trance is slightly heavier, longer travel with better standover design – more “Trail” orientated.
Anthem is an XC race bike that feels “OK” on the trails – more likely to feel like a HT!

Both are good for long days in the saddle, but then I like the Maestro suspension so I would say that!

Giant Anthem 29er. 100mm of travel, still feels capable. Easy to drop on from a hardtail and will probably be as light as the soul. Mind I dont like 4bar suspension as it relies on shocks to reduce bob!

Pretty sure X0 was around in 1to1 form towards the end of the 90’s!!!

I believe the answer is no!

Arch ex rims are heavier and not designed to have spokes pulled uber tight.

UK proof bikes and you’re talking about maintenance and suspension?

If it’s a UK proof bike you want then rigid singlespeed or Rohloff.

…made of titanium with a belt drive…

If you’re fat, like me, you’re gonna need more pivots dude. Light peeps can get away with single pivots as there’s less ‘bob’

I don’t think weight makes a difference, in fact the heavier you are the more the supension has to work to get bobbing!!!

I ran a superlight (I know!) whilst I was 18st+ with minimal bobbing even on pedally peak climbs.
