i know just how good other deore brakes are thanks. i have some and have seen a few bargain sets too.

but that’s mising the point. the reason i asked is because the m575 were flip-flop-able. it would be very handy for me to be able to swap lever sides so easily.

i’ll probably go for a set of sram levels in the end then

are they symmetrical/flip-flop the levers? can i swap sides?

emac65 thanks for your thoughts, but i need spension. currently thinking 80mm

the stuff i ride around me is too much for my neck and shoulders otherwise and i get serious headaches.

also a few small jumps and drop-offs i like to do, but can’t take rigid.

i’ve already swapped bars and stem, chainrings, and a dropper is on the list. i’ll do brakes eventually and tubless is aalready done, mostly because of puntures.

    yep, makes sense zippy,

and yes whitestone, i’d rather a little self-steer than getting pinged about.

found 2 part used jumbo jims for 30 € the pair this morning so i reckon i’ll give that a go.

just need to find some cheap blutos now!

and as far as self steer is concerned? you get noticeably less at 7.5 than at 6.5 say?

or is it more about the tyres and their carcass?

and yes, weather makes quite a different. left it in the (hot) sun the other day and the tires gained easily a few psi

ah great thanks phil H. jobsagoodun then

i’ve finally got me a dune. loving it, but definately going to need some blutos and a dropper post, due to terrain, and my knackered shoulders and neck : )

so self-steer question: i’m running the original juggers, will stick with them til they’re gubbed due to budget, 2nd biek etc etc. but finding the self steer, or not-steer more like, pretty bad, and am convinved i can feel it from the back as well.

i do have them pretty soft. 0.4 bar = about 6psi in Freedom units. i’m assuming a bit harder will help? but i’m pretty light – 65kg and this seems to be a sweet spot for dealing with loose stoney stuff and not dinging the rims.

also, from a quick skim, seems liek other tyres might suffer less from self steer?

basically the jugs are a bit shit and i should stick some JJs on? that’s what i’m expecting to hear : )

i’m only riding dry trails, so mud -type grip not an issue, but i would like a bit more traction. even at 0.4 bar the back wheel spins out surprisingly often. jumbos again then?

i reckon when i get some blutos on this will sort all of this a bit. will be able to run both front harder, and the back probably needs to be a bit harder anyways

i usually try to give it a quick blip and 5 minutes, but sometimes, i forget as i’m in the middle of doing something else; i’ve just turned the bike over for example

not the ad. you’re after, but pinnacle, evans’ own brand make some great everyday bikes for mountainbikers, at great prices, tho i’d prefer a roadrat too: )

well i’m definately after some blutos.

i mean it’s fun and everything, but just too much getting pinged about off stuff and too many landings i’m not willing to take through just my arms, shoulders and tires.

that’s what i descirbed before with an absess yes. it happened by itself while i was driving. wierd sensation, but it le tthe pus and pressure out.

anyway, turns out it was, according to my dentist, a stray bit of cement from when the crown was glued, on digging into my gum. as she said, sounds like a small thing (and was; size of a breadcrumb) but can be unbelievably painful.

so sounded quite convincing, and felt it, i did get a good night’s sleep, BUT this morning it’s back.

could just be healing up, but i’m back on the ibu and para…

    grrr.

i’ll try that triplle header, and ground up paracetamol? hmm.

it doesn’t seem to be a proper absess cos it’s open to the rest of the mouth. it’s under a recently done crown, and sugar can get in there causing a spike of pain.

did hava an absess once which relieved the pressure by rupturing sidways out of my gum. not violently, but jus puss pushing out of the side. nice.

    seems like they do

i would a Polisport Guppy, front mounted.

have a weeride but these look better. no bar to ‘negotiate’ and still solid with the frame, not the steering.

    got them at decathlon.

otherwise, i have a weeride i can send you for not a lot of money, say 20 quid plus postage

    smart thanks kayak

yep i agree about arms and shoulders. i get regular headaches from shoulder and neck stiffness. caused by work mostly but either exacerbated, or sometimes cured, by biking.

still think bluto will be my best option in this respect

    jamiesilo

well i did say i’m going to give it a go rigid!

i’ll be sticking with the juggernauts for the meantime. my trails are always dry. but maybe if i see a 2nd hand 4.8 i’ll try it.

thing is, i do want to do my jumps on it. the first bit of the trail by my house has a few nice ones, so i’d like the help landing them. but we’ll see. i may just use it as a crawler for slower speed dog-walking (apart from winter snow)

so can any of you give me axle to crown height on the rigid forks you’ve kept?

anyone want to sell me a medium dune?

been posting wanted ads for ages but nobody looks at those things!

am keeping a close eye on ebay, and there’s fairly high turnover, but a lot are chain-sucked or the sellers just aren’t willing to post.

give me a shout if you can sort me out

thanks tinas. so is a fatty 135 front 170 back. save me trawling about trying to find out : )

and also, the frame failure is probably as a result of the chain suck? had heard that CS was the main issue.

    jamiesilo

so Dune owners, how tall are you? are you on a small or a medium?

i’m just under 5’9.  my reckoned ideal ETT length would be about 595 i reckon. think medium is 585 and large 610. or kinda bang in between the 2.  my proper bike has a 600mm tt, and a lay-back seat post right enough. it’s fine. my dad bike has more like 610mm. and a layback seatpost too.

but i like my bikes to feel small underneath me, low top tube etc as i have stumpy little legs. and i like a short stem. so none of that really get’s me any closer. i guess with a medium i can at least lengthen the stem, with a large i can only shorten it so far.

but i’m tending towards a large now, looking at those numbers…

    anyone similar sized?

yep, i’m holding out for a dune then.

martymac, i do have 2 pairs of hope hubs already, and have been glad of their adaptability many times! but this time it’s just a budget deal i’m after : )

thanks for all the offers folks. which facebook group btw roverpig?

i’d be after a medium, not a large and i’d be after the whole bike, or at least frameset, wheels and cranks, for about 350 quid, so options a bit limited to the likes of dunes and wazoos.

open to offers tho. had great offer from mr sausage but just a tiny bit too expensive for me

    jamiesilo

ok great. al as i suspected. i’l be sticking to 197 and 150 then.

much as i would love some hope fat hubs martymac, they would push my budget jsut a little…

right thanks everyone. had a feeling that would be the case with the motor. makes sense.

to all the “just buy..” folk: the hwle point was not to just buy anything, more then perhaps a component that cost a tenner. and i won’t be buying parkside powertools thanks! but next time i replace my grinder i’ll look out for a variable speed one, sure.

thnaks for all the useful replies anyway

wouldn’t be for cutting or grinding discs, but for wire brushes, pads etc

you realy think going slower would cause a disc to fail? i often give them pretty nasty tweaks, the thin ones, and they still hold up. quite hard to get them to fail achly.

and also then that would be problematic for the cordless grinders, right?

and i would of course like a cordless one, which do run quite a lot slower. it’s on the list. but in the mean time.

have to recommend decathlon ones, tho does mean you’re choosing sweat shop distant manufacture etc rather than uk. however, well made fleible fitting options, cheap.

thanks. always thought they looked daft with the big old fork rake etc. but may end up setting up some spare wheels like that if i pick up a cheapy fat bike soon.

Anyone done the opposite? of course there won’t be clearance issues etc, so just asking about feel of the frame.

background is i’m running B+ in a frame originally for 26″ (i couldn’t believe it either).

i have a 27.5 fork in the front which because of mods i’ve done, has only ~135mm travel, instead of 150mm and the frame is at 150 still. assuming a direct proportional relationship between frame and shock rate, (i know it’s not) a 200 x 51mm would reduce my travel to closer to 135 at the back as well which would be about the right amount for me and my riding anyway. but, assuming it’s a half decent shock with the right tune, would it just feel weird? ie travel would stop before the end of the frame rat e graph so to speak, and last bit might be odd; bottom out too easily/not easy enough.

course i could just try it, but don’t have the cash lying around to throw at that kind of experimenting.

    apologies for thread hi-jack.

OP what frame and shock do you have?

getting to threds you’ve commented in is now a very long winded process.

and only htanks to cooie do i know how to do it at all, lcickin on the # in my list of replies.

i don’t understand why this should be more complicated than before

i would like to say that i don’t approve of the new (more common) way of sorting classified posts according to time of latest reply, meaning they can be ‘bumped’.

i regularly scan the classifieds to see what new things have come up, and this makes that type of use much more difficult.

i imagine a lot of other people use them this way too, but perhaps not?. anyway, i always agreed with the way it worked before; sorted only by the time of the original post.

yeh i reckon i want something with a bit of grip, just for rolling through bits of mud/grass etc.

since found a massive choice at bike24 well within budget so i think i’ll get something there. maybe fat franks

i would get a second hand something half decent, with possibility of buying cheap copy batteries.

especially if you don’ have li-ion batterries.

i bought new makitas for years and have added copy batteries which perform jsut as well. that’s 18v li-ion stuff.

then a recently bought a wee 2nd hand blue bosch ’12v’ (10.8v) just to leave in the workshop, and a couple of batteries of ebay for 25 quid the pair. really impressed with the whole set-up, and it cost me 80 euros…
