So a purg 2.3 comes up smaller than trail king 2.2?
Are conti 2.4s (trial/mountian kings) massive then?
Are they any good these days? Old mountain kings (I think) got a lot o bad press

What is nice and big without necessarily having too much of a DH tread and weight?

And lastly, has anyone tried the new fat Albert’s?

    thanks everyone
i actually want as big as i can get, though not convinced a dirt wizard would fit in the frame. got 2.4 fat alberts at the mo but the new ones don’t look that convincing.
i’ve about 10 or 12 mm either side so room for a little more but those dirt wizards look monstrous! thanks bandito. fancy crackin g out the tape measure/verniers?
ever put one on a narrower rim?

    thanks vinny.
    good to know!
i’m not convinced it’s either, and suspect more likely to be the actual CCFL lamp.
just my hunch since i reckon cable would produce more intermittent on/off behaviour, eg screen properly on at some angles and off at other – not the case with mine.

didn’t find it that much of a hassle to rip apart. time consuming but straight forward enough. but aye, i’ll maybe get the cable too and do them both together.

thanks mattyfez. what are you reffering to there? the mac or the other one i mentioned after?

    : )

i don’t have a very good multi-meter, tho i do have a better quality voltage/continuity tester that would handle it i guess.

anyways, i’ll try the new inverter first i reckon.

while we’re at it tho, does all this imply that for the other laptop i have, with a completely dead screen, that it won’t be the inverter that’s the cause?
and therefore what? graphics card, or video card or whatever?
i tried a replacement screen in this one to no avail, so sent it back.
i did drop it on the floor, which caused the failure i reckon, tho a few days after

i probably could but have never really figured that out. i guess test output from inverter? but it’s huge voltage from what i understand?
just test it on as high a voltage setting as poss in 2 pins, just like a wall socket?

i’ve jsut ordered an inverter off ebay for 15 euros so will give that a try first.

be good to work out multimeter testing tho, as have another pc laptop with no screen sitting doing nothing…

so you mean it could be the inverter gfs?
yes it did occur to me as i wrote that, that maybe the backlight could flicker on and the go ou tif it’s goosed, liek you say with a strip light.

and have now discovered that backlight is repaceable by itself. saw a vid of a guy who’d found an identical one from a dell and bunged it in. however i don’t fancy that job. just too delicate.

best bet is to try an inverter then i guess since they are only about 15 quid. a screen looks like around 50, which is still not too bad, and a backlight bulb/tube is only from U.S. that i can find on ebay, and needs delicate soldering. not my strong point

    jamiesilo

    thanks yous.
yep, been on ifixit and got all the right tools, tiny drivers, spodgers etc.

i don’t think it can be backlight since screen lights up perfectly normally momentarily eg when pulgged to external monitor and had lid closed, then open it again.
also, i’ve a feeling i read somewhere earlier that back light is not replacemable by itself. ie is part of expensive screen assembly.
    will research further.

if it’s inverter would i even get anything on the screen?

min rim width in fact 35mm for dirt wizard. that’s not too far off then

    jamiesilo
    Free Member

    aye, i figured too scotroutes.
but yep, may be worth a gamble with a dirt wizard, my rims are stans flows so something like 29mm i think..

more likely to be a tight fit in the forks. i reckon they’re recent enough for Rockshox to have decided to bring the vertical clearance down to as small as possible so folk can’t stick 27.5 wheels in. it’s tiny anyway.

what i’m after are some big 26 tyres.
i’ve been on 2.4/2.35 schwalbe for ages but where i live with very rough surfaced trails, even bigger has always made sense to me. i’ve a bit to spare either side in my new frame, but dirt wizards would probably be pushing it, and anyway surly reccommend a 50mm rim or something.

anyone know of any say 26 x 2.6″ tyres? is it just too hopeful to wish that some may get made eventually?

i think over-centre spring on the pedal arm is what i changed, by the sound of it.

according to my (french) manual, the clutch is cable operated, ie between pedal and clutch mechanism?
this means it’s not hydraulic right? = no master cylinder, no hydraluic fluid, reservoir etc.?

i could be easily persuaded that what i’m experiencing is due to a ‘knotted’ cable. mind you it is intermitent, which i don’t think a cable would be.

    jamiesilo

    ok thanks everyone.
just need to get my head around what you’re all saying a bit, having never worked on a clutch and i’ll see how i get on.

wow, i thought no-one had bitten so didn’t look back till now.

so thanks everyone for the advice on using rollers which i didn’t ask for.
i do use half decent heads, a bucket not a tray, clingfilm/placcy bags where appropriate (usually not for me cos it’s large ares now and then), clean out rollers quickly and efficiently otherwise using what is presumably called a painters thumb, warm water and washing-up liquid and not washing it all down the drain, and i can (i think!)load a roller properly
    and thanks tiny!

i figured they’re a gimmick too but in the end i reckoned i’ll just try a wagner one for 30 euros. same as you dirksdiggler.
if it saves a bit of time it’ll be worth it.
will try to report back for those curious.

fwiw, with a fairly long pile roller, and a good load of paint, i seem to cover well about a third of a square metre. with a pole on, filling roller is more fiddly but the rolling itself is a lot better with 2 hands control. last room i did, charging roller seemed to take as long as covering that third of a sq m.

budget is kida SFA. it my mrs who’s buying and she wants to spend €100, but let’s say £100 for the sake of the discussion
i wouldny bother and would get a newish nexus 5,but she wants smaller

good to hear about nexus 4 issues

aye, i haven’t looked at reach numbers enough for them to mean anything to me, but i decided a while back that it might be the thing to start looking at.
otherwise, i have found getting out the spirit level and tapey to be quite informative; measuing horizontal to centre of bars from saddle, and vertical drop if any. doesn’t tell you much about buying a new frame of course, but useful for comparing riding positions between bikes you already have

well i finally built up my ‘new’ (2012!) longer frame last night, with 40mm stem, and seat slid forward on rails 15 or 20mm, it was right back, and it’s grand. no worries about frame size anyway, just new geo to get used to.
it does feel a lot more stable etc but i think a lot of that is due to frame beong four years younger than previous – tpaered headtube, 12mm back axle etc, and possibly better shock-frame arangement.
    so there we go

aye, that as well. socket is 3/4 righty nuff.
but how often would you use a 3/4″ torque wrench?
unless you repair tractors etc : )

    jamiesilo

i am a tool snob too, so i may just get a bike one for now, and a good 1/2″ one next time i’ve got something to do on the van. it was at least a metre scaffolding pole on the end of the drive last time, so i’ll get a half inch i reckon!

    jamiesilo

    yep, good, thanks. i’m persuaded.
    i’ll get 2 : )

sure, obviously, but still, it’s nice to be on 1/2″ sometimes for peace of mind.
    i do also need 110, not 100.
saw the teng tho, looks good for the money

jemima, are you implying that something that goes up to 112Nm may not be that sensitive/accurate don at 7Nm?

    forgot to add the link:

in case anyone’s researching this later, i got confirmation from YT that shock is as jakebeach says (not that i doubted it)
    200×57 in an LH tune.

    jamiesilo

aye, when they were still quite young company, prices were astounding!
not astounding enough for a budget biker like me mind, but i wanted one nevertheless. anyway now i’ve got one, frame was a bargian i thought, probably partly due to original cheapness.

extra bits now ordered up; 40mm stem, hub converters etc…

    Carry Freedom.
    the best
    great engineering
i’ve owned a bob yack and a carry freedom Y-frame small and the Yframe was miles better. single wheel roles and tracks well, but as soon as you stop, and if you’e carrying any weight, it’ a PITA
based in scotland too carry freedom.

    jamiesilo
    Free Member

aye, i’ve definately felt spat off before, i guess shortness of wheelbase comes into it to of course. it’s clear i need a bit more length as i come very close to going over the nars every now and then when front wheel gets hung up on a biggish stone.
measured my town bike and it’s 600 and fine so i reckon i’ll go for it.
can always change dropper to a non-layback one in time if i really don’t get used to it

thanks tracey. good to know. but i’ll write them all off anyways!

yes chakaping. i meant any virtual pivot/dual link/DW like you said.
i was (possibly wrongly?) using VPP to stand for all virtual pivot

and yes, good to know about mondrakers. i’d be in danger of getting myself into the same situation as with my pitch.

i’d consider an older reign for sure, whoever said that.

    ok, thanks for other recommendations.
