Putoline lasts thousands of miles on road. Its brilliant for touring as it lasts a whole tour

But what if forever reason that you do find yourself needing to apply some lube en route, what would be best to use, Squirt?

Mrs always tells me off. She starts the car without depressing the clutch (I know, I know!).

There’s only one option, buy a new car! Our 17 plate with doesn’t allow you to start the engine without depressing the clutch!

There’s an activity centre at Dol-y-Gaer, might be worth asking them if they’ll take a few quid off you for a space in their car park.

I’ll admit to being Putoline-curious, but my imminent new-bike-day is touring shaped and current lubing thoughts are centered around being able to look after a chain on the road for many hundreds of miles.

I’m currently flipping between going down the Squirt route and any bog standard wet lube wot is available in the nearest bike shop…

    Left field suggestion.

    Waggon tarpaulin company…

That’s not left field at all, it’s how Ortlieb started out! Also boat outfitters who make covers might be worth a try.

Ride the other way out of the door for 20 minutes, you’ll be warmed up for the climb then.

I had a bad experience after trying the High5 samples given out a SiTS bitd™, involving dropping the bike and heading straight for a portaloo at the end of a lap…

Grab a jar of malt extract from your local healthfood shop and have a go at making your own; I did some research a couple of years ago and my gastrointestinal system is perfectly happy with the recipe I came up with.

I did try the rice cakes from Feed Zone Portables which work well, but don’t freeze all to well- a jersey pocket full of ricey mush is pretty suboptimal! Flapjack, cereal bars etc. work for me with Torq gel for an I’m-done-in-,-I-just-need-to-get-me-home type situation.

I commute in by bike everyday; do you really want several muddy, road-grity, wet bikes hung up in a communal area of the office?

As above, they’ll soon let you know when they’ve had enough / done too much. Just got my mountain biking mojo back after taking out 7yo to Fineshades a few weeks ago.

She really enjoyed Thetford on Friday, not so much coming off on the tarmac at the end of a GoRide session on Sat and had fun yesterday on a 20km picnic ride, after swimming in the morning. Really looking forward doing more off road with her and doing some decent length tours.

My guts don’t take too kindly to off the shelf energy drink mixes, I remember not-so-fondly a first lap of SITS back in the day after giving the free sample of High5 ago, I nearly didn’t finish the lap but managed to hold out and make a beeline for the portaloo right after finishing the lap…

For the past 18 months or so I’ve been making up my own using malt extract (available from Holland & Barrett etc.) and orange juice. I looked the recipes of a range of commercially available products and came up the the ratio here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1m6AG4QpAywgnqbLpS5WzCyTBXArg5Yij4KghulUPqag/edit?usp=sharing

No guttural moanings and sufficient energy to get me round a 4 hour club run of a Sunday morning without having to scoff half the contents of the counter at the cafe stop!

I went to Aldi today. Mrs CFH had heard great things about their nappies. Blinking flip, they’re cheap! Was a little bit like stepping back in time to South Yorkshire in the 80’s apart from that.

The german dead pig products aren’t half bad either, Capt’n.

Alas, I’ve not heard any such gems in our local store recently, it’s been the Ocado man knocking on the door for the past couple of months and they’ve not been so amusing 🙁

First bike commute today since starting a new job, picked a nice day to start 😀 Just shy of 15 miles each way and not much longer than it takes to drive into Cambridge!

A chap in local club gear on a nice Enigma passed me on the way home, I don’t think he took too kindly to me nicking a tow- lasted for about 100m before dropping a gear and giving it some beans 😈 I did feel a bit bad about it actually; I was going to ask if it was OK, but he spotted me before I had chance when negotiating some old duffers wandering all over the cycle path.

4 weeks ago I said “It’s about time I moved on”, boss said “Yep, I understand people need to move on.” And that was about it 😆

Penultimate day here, no one lined up to replace me (there’s only me and him in the office), Boss said earlier “Um, I suppose I’d better learn how to use the software you use. Well, too late now!” Almighty-being-of-your-choice help him!

How about alternating between orange and light grey? Or just going for a solid, but relatively narrow line?

But then it wouldn’t look like an OS 1:50,000 map, would it 😀

Here’s a screenshot from my 810, I think its clear enough.

Of course, zooming in a little more makes things much clearer.

I can build a map of Belgium for you using this style when I get home this weekend if you want.

That’d be great, thanks muchly! We’re riding to Bruges via the Channel Tunnel from next Wednesday so ideally I’d need north France too.

If you think that’s all you can cook on a two ring stove, you are very, very wrong (or very, very unimaginative).

That statement was a touch of me convincing myself (and no doubt the wife, who is from good Yorkshire stock) that I’d be happy to fork out over a £ton on one TBH 😀 We’ve done all sorts on two gas rings but the Cobb does open up a whole different way of cooking that really appeals. With a toddler we spend less time on the hill / beach and more time at the campsite, thus more time to actually enjoy cooking al fresco.

We’ve always used a 2 ring gas cooker and a small Weber BBQ in the past but I think I have to persuade the missus that we need a Cobb this year. Cooking the same dishes on the stove with the odd BBQ does get boring, having the ability to roast stuff and make bread & pizzas easily is all kinds of win for me 😀

I suppose it comes down to if you like eating and cooking decent grub, or if you’re happy with a jar of pasta sauce with some chorizo thrown over a plate of fusilli with the odd charged banger & cardboard burger!

A mate and I were taken to the pub by the IT teacher in year 11. We just whipped of our ties off and he brought us a pint! He had a couple of Stellers and drove back to school!

Also, after a parents evening I was in the local with my dad and in walked the PE teacher.

Great work Flaperon and thanks for the mirror pdw- downloading as I type! I feel the footpath / BW styling is just about spot on (on the 810) FWIW.

Spurred on by your good work I managed to mkgmap of Belgium yesterday for the first time- any chance of uploading your TYP file to see how it works on foreign shores?

We put our daughter on one at an LBS at 22 months (she was walking at 13m) and she could just about touch the floor with both feet, I don’t think the seat post was all the way down either. We paid the deposit on one last week and she’ll be getting a spotty Frog for her birthday at the end of next month!

Thanks for taking the time to produce and offer up the map Flaperon. I used it with my 810 on my commute this morning and looks great, although going through town it was a bit cluttered with bus stops etc. I can’t find a de-clutter option on the 810, any pointers anyone?

Although on the laptop at home I’ve got a picture of the Kanderfern glacier looking toward the Mutterhorn Hut.

Edit- a similar pic to this without me in a crevasse and my wife and a gaggle of my Explorer Scouts looking on:

One of my Explorer Scouts did LEJOG a couple of years ago. He was going to do it on his, must have been, >40lb lump of an Iron Horse BSO full sus 😮

Luckily an LBS helped him out and loaned him a Dawes tourer- might be worth a cheeky ask around?

    Cheers,
    Jamie
