At some point I want to own a car that does less mpg than it has cylinders…

I’m never going to fly to America.

    Does that make it ok?

However I’d rather both grannies and driving Gods had obligatory eye tests and a driving evaluation every five years. from the age of fifty.

This, regardless of age would do a lot of good for all involved and something I’d whole heartedly support.

Molgrips, the point wasn’t about narrow roads. There is ‘having a little trouble’ and then there is practically stopping on wide A roads for every oncoming vehicle.

Yes, fair enough on those points BUT I’m not talking about the odd car with badly adjusted lights/main beam etc. This is for every car that comes the other way.

    EVERY SINGLE CAR.

Whilst we’re at it… if you’ve got a headlight out then change the bulb don’t drive merrily on on a combination of fogs/sides/main beam. Seem 1 in 10 around here has a comedy selection of lights at the mo, maybe they’re trying to be festive.

Or people will go for even smaller gaps travelling faster. Brilliant!

That’s got bugger all to do with it. Just stating a fact, the faster you get out and back onto your side of the road the safer it is. If the gap is too small you don’t overtake in the 1st place.

Not seeing a problem unless the driver behind is too close and / or not paying sufficient attention?

That is exactly the problem, how many drivers do you trust to be doing just that? An emergency stop for a person fair enough but but I wouldn’t chance writing your car off on the off chance the person behind is paying attention.

I’m quite happy to come to a complete halt if the lights of on-coming traffic mean I can’t see. If we’re going to have driving rules my first is

Yes but on a wide, national speed limit road at night that isn’t the case.

+1, and I don’t see how these worrying overtakes would be made safer by going faster than 70?

You’d be on the wrong side of the road for a shorter amount of time…?

    Whist we’re on rants.

#1 Pheasants. Just run them over, they’re only purpose in life is to eventually be shot. If you do an emergency stop for one be prepared for the drive behind to get out and beat you with the stupid feathery thing.

2# If you can’t drive at over 35mph in the dark and feel the need to brake to 25 every time a car comes the other way go and get your eyes tested and some driving lessons.

Other than that I really enjoy my drive to and from work.

Choice of brand of car is tightly linked with ego needs and status so whilst stereotyping is unhelpful there may well be some similarities of underlying psychology which drivers of certain brands have in common. For e.g. why would you buy a big, macho-looking pickup called a ‘Warrior’ and with that word written in big letters on the back of it if you felt strong and secure in your own masculinity

Same with a car which is vastly more powerful than you need given UK roads and speed limits… what, really, is the point of a car that does 120mph in a country where there is absolutely zero opportunity to drive above 70mph if it’s not somekind of expression of your status? Insecure people tend to need these kind of status symbols and are therefore more likely to be inappropriately aggressive to hide their insecurity…. from that you get stereotyped behaviour. I don’t think this is brand-specific, just leads to an observable tendency for people with powerful cars to also be the more aggressive drivers…

What utter rubbish. Not read such drivel in a long while.

That’s the best thing about Cwmcarn – that the climb on Twrch is a great climb in itself, rather than just trundling up hairpins carefully graded so as not to give fat middle aged MAMBAs coronaries, like most trail centres.

    This.

Some fun flowy bits up on the top traverse but I’d say the final descent of Twrch doesn’t offer much to get excited about. A rough, fairly straight single track once you get into it, the final bit into the car park is quite entertaining but only at warp speed.

I’d say the new track offers a bit more variety but as said, it’ll be muddy up top.

Yup, same as the Delta S4 posted above. Truly spectacular cars I’d chose over any modern super car but are technically homologation specials for racing.

Same goes for a lot of the LM cars on the previous page, F40/XJ220/Mclaren F1 could be argued either way I guess…

Cheers Neil, I’ll look into the SBR stuff. Builder coming round today so will chat through the options.

That was just the 1st link that came up in Google. I was actually meaning the stuff that would be used with plasterboards over the top. In my mind that’d be better in terms of condensations than painting some sort of damp blocker directly onto the brickwork.

This problem is in an upstairs room, I’ve a feeling if we could be just moving the damp to the room below.

We’ve let the wall dry for about 4 months now, last week I took all the old plaster and render off so it’s been sat as bare bricks for a while now to hopefully dry it out further.

Looking at the bricks the staining from the chimney is quite obvious and I think this is what was being drawn through the plaster by the moisture resulting in a sticky, tar like residue and stain. Would using something like lime have any effect on this?

I think it’s something along the lines of Flexacryl that the builder is recommending, what I was thinking about was something like this…

one.com – cheap, no frills hosting with 1 click install for Worpress so no faffing with databases etc.

Then as above bang up a WordPress site. Any problems/questions welcome to give me a shout.

    Monkey spunk.

I thought that was only good for holding old cars together. Live you learn.

Flexacryl – that’s the stuff. Would seem ott but would it’d let the wall breath/stop the staining?

Did think about cladding the wall but have an extension on that side of the house, it needed re-pointing so went for that. Thanks for the heads up on the funding rumour, will do some digging!

Cheers for the info, the wall is solid though has a chimney for two fire places running up through it. I’ve a feeling some of the staining is down to that due to the smell and colour.

My parents have used lime on their place so will have a chat with them.

/\ Ok, fair point on the xj220, NA V6 then?

    Did they?

I’m sure it’s a great car but just not quick or bonkers enough for me to see it as such.

Sub 300 bhp, available with a slush box and looks that you wouldn’t give a second glance unless you knew what pedigree it had hiding beneath it’s dull exterior.

F40 is too old. Not in production now, not a supercar.

Can we resort to name calling yet?

Wouldn’t class an NSX as a supercar, too sensible looking and a v6… don’t think so.

Lets not transpose “character” as unreliable and prone to catching fire.

You mention Italians then perfectly describe a TVR ;)

Orly…… dont what ever you do then google “VRS TSI cam chain tensioner failure” its quite expensive.

Yeah, don’t do that – it’d be a really bad idea.

Wouldn’t say TFSI sounds like a diesel, however can be a slightly noisier/rattly on startup. Once they’re running there isn’t all that much between them, the tsi is a bit smoother and slightly better mpg & power.

Of course it’s a big assumption, you’ll get idiots in all walks of life and types of cars.

Concentrating doesn’t make you immune from crashing but its at least a step in the right direction.

Back to the original Golf, ticks a lot of boxes but not all for me I’m afraid. Too modern, not enough cylinders, needs proper 4wd or rwd and isn’t Italian.

ps. Clarkson is a bellend and I’ve been cycling far longer than I’ve been driving and thats long enough.

My commute is a mixture of A and B roads, mixed driving, some pottering, some not.

It works out to average just over 30mpg which I’m happy with. If you flog it then it’ll drop dramatically but I’ve managed to get 40mpg on the commute driving as economically as possible.

I wouldn’t go back to an oil burner.

I think I’d actually prefer roads full of people in fast cars concentrating on what they’re doing (if a little quicker than some would deem safe), in a cars that they look after and give a shit about.

I run a Magic Mary/Rock Razor combo on my Enduro.

Went to demo the 650b and 29er versions of the Enduro last weekend that were running a combination of Specialized Butcher/Slaughter tyres – overall massively impressed them. The Butcher isn’t quite as aggressive as the MM but a very competent, grippy front tyre.

At £30 an end you’ll be saving £40 on a set over the similar Schwalbes. £60 feels much more sensible than £100 on a pair of bike tyres! Just a shame you can’t get the Slaughter in 26.

Don’t get hung up about lumens, all about optics.

Flood light on the bars with a nice wide spread for climbing and technical stuff and a powerful spotlight with good throw on your head for when speeds are higher and looking through corners etc.

For me whilst flat light isn’t great a bigger problem with a powerful light low down is that it exaggerates any shadows cast by drops/rocks etc making easily rollable stuff look like drops of doom. If however you only ride trails you know in the dark this is less of an problem.

I’d happily ride with just the spot and think it’s a good way of forcing you too look further down the trail and improving body/head position but wouldn’t like to ride with just a bar mounted light.

Can’t help with the tree problem but I do think following on from this there needs to be a new rule enforced:

All new threads now require a sketch in MS paint to help illustrate their point.

Colour blind and a designer (both print and web). No problems a aside from occasionally having to double check colour palettes i’ve come up with are acceptable with a colleague. The colours always work together but occasionally I’ll have picked something that I thought was green which is actually brown or similar.

By far the worse thing he’ll have do deal with is when people find out your colourblind. He’ll have the conversation 100s of times and will inevitably go:

    “You’re colourblind?”

    “Yes”

“So you see everything in black and white then?”

    “No”

“Oh, so how does it work then?”

” *insert brief explanation of how it works* “

“Right, so what colour is this” – points to sky

    “Blue”

“Ok, and this?” – points to grass

    “Green”

“So you’re not really colourblind then?”

“FFS. Even if I couldn’t see the colours correctly everyone knows grass is green and the sodding sky is blue!”

“No need to get stroppy about it”

Completely ignore people indicating until you see that the car is doing what the indication suggests. I wouldn’t pull out at a junction just because a car coming is indicating to turn off, well not until you see it braking and starting to make the manoeuvre.

A lot of drivers don’t use them at all and a good chunk of those that do seem to be fairly clueless about how to operate them.

That doesn’t excuse the guy’s behaviour though, you do get the odd worked up bellend.

What really takes the biscuit is when you see a single person driving an empty car with a bike on the roof or boot; they must really lack imagination.

Or they give a shit about the state of the inside of their car and don’t want it covering in mud/oil/cow poop etc.

If my bike is clean and it’s a long journey it might go in the boot, if it’s hanging in mud after a ride it’s going on the roof. 20mm axle bolted to the rack so can drive as normal, luckily live in the sticks so not worried about scrotes pinching it.

Can’t believe how worked up people can get about how others carry their bikes… even for STW.

Are two were buggers for doing it.

Straight under the hose, cover them in cheapest ketchup you can find, hose off then repeat wash with a bit of Dirty Beastie or similar. Only thing we found that’d guarantee getting the smell out in 1 wash.

Luckily they dislike the process enough that it’s sufficient punishment and I think its put them off rolling in the stuff… for now.

Don’t know if this’ll work but for those of you who use Spotify it’s a collection of music I’ve put together from mtb videos from years gone by plus some other more up to date stuff. Also a couple of bits from snowboarding vid too thrown in for good measure.

Mostly the Sprung and Earthed series of videos plus a few other classics. Theres also the full soundtracks of Sprung 3,4 and 5 in there.

I’ve a real soft spot for those 155s, would love to transplant the engine and running gear out of my Fiat into one and make a right hand drive Q4.

Marshguards/Fender Bender do the job of keeping shot out of your face and are cheap enough. I tend to buy the big version then cut them down so they’ve a bit sticking out the front of the arch.

You can run them upside down so you have no graphics on show, don’t look too bad then.

I’d hazard a guess if you asked the person behind it that is exactly how they’d describe it.
