WTB’s website reckons 597g per rim for the ST i25s. Even so, for that price I got a pair a few months ago, they’ve built into strong, wide-ish wheels on cheap Novatec hubs. Can’t go wrong for the price.

Excellent, thanks all! Plenty of material to have a gander at. It’s true that you can’t really beat an OS map though.

I bought the cheapest Netgear plug in (power socket) one on Amazon when my room was the only one in a vast Victorian terraced student house that the main router didn’t reach. Worked absolutely fine.

Edit: just dug it out of the draw of many bits in the kitchen and it’s an N300 too.

Malt loaf, with butter. Squash it and it takes up less space but still tastes exactly the same/has the same texture. Some sort of black magic trickery that is.

Whoops, missed that when I reposted Steve! It sounds like a very similar position that you’re in. I haven’t been told to hand in my licence at any point, but was initially told that I had to complete and return the form to them or my licence would be suspended.

I’ll have a good read through all the above links and try and get hold of the consultant to see what their opinion is on me driving, it seems like it might be covered by the Section 88. Hopefully a call to the DVLA tomorrow will help to clarify this too.

    Thanks for all the responses!

Finally heard back today (25/09) via a letter sent on the 21st. Apparently they have contacted the consultant to get a definitive answer which could take up to 6 weeks, joy!! What a drag.

I’m hoping this will be less time than that, has anyone had any experience with waiting on a medical answer?

On a personal level I’m healing well and pretty much back to normal activity wise. Very steady rides and turbo training in the back yard which is a relief after time off the bike.

How about these from Gevenalle? Should do exactly what you’re after and they have options to work with either Shimano road or mtb derailleurs.

Do you find that the bar bag gets in the way at all when you’re on the hoods? I didn’t bother trying to fit on in on a recent trip because I thought it would be an issue, but maybe I should have done.

    It all looks excellent though!

Take a look on Trailforks at the stuff in Bringewood/Mortimers, hard to go wrong with it, and really great trails! Also Hopton and Eastridge are well worth a visit, all signposted trails.

Edit: Around Church Stretton have a look at Caer Caradoc (cheeky though), I love the descent down the main ridge and then down the steep/steppy bit down into the valley. On the other side of the Mynd the Stiperstones are good and you could make a loop including Eastridge with them.

Take a look at Alpkit too! I’ve not had a bad piece of kit from them.

No problems either with the double butted ones from cyclebasket.com, 21p a spoke (inc. nipples), can’t go wrong.

Mowgli, I have mine set up 1×9, with flat bars and guards, sounds very similar! I can’t embed a photo from my phone but the link should work:

I love it! Gets a lot of miles and it’s very comfy. Flat bars work perfectly on it, I wouldn’t worry! In fact, the reach on my large might be a little too much with drops.

Buggered if I can get flickr to embed the image from my phone but here’s a link to the Charge as it stands:

Really do love it, gets more miles than my other bikes put together. Rack on the front is used for Deliveroo as I got fed up with the giant backpack.

It’s not the lightest (cheap 2kg Superstar wheels) but is strong and functional. Tiagra cranks, 1×9 XT, BB7s, cheap finishing kit etc

In exactly the same position I bought a Charge Plug disc frame off eBay (new) for £119. They still have some, only xs and small though now I think. Bargain! Only the frame though, but I also picked up some secondhand disc forks from a Planet X Kaffenback from here for £15. An old pair of 29er wheels and set of BB7s I had and all the bits off my truly knackered rim braked Dawes hybrid and it’s brilliant!

There’s a whole thread about the cheap eBay Plug frames somewhere, I still need to get a picture of mine up.

Edit: The frame is the lighter/better tubed Tange steel than the base level single speed Plug. Rides beautifully.

Extra edit: I run it with flat bars, guards and 32s now.

At the cheap end of the scale (and thus a bit weighty) but these WTB i25 (25mm internal) on Planet X hubs are £100 (27.5 or 29er in a couple of different axles)

Struggling with the hotlink on my phone but give it a Google.

Or they’re selling the rims for £10 each in 27.5/29

I did hit my head, just not in an area protected by the helmet (chin), maybe we should all be wearing full faces when out on the road?

Joking aside, the quip about wearing a helmet was purely clickbait, it’s impossible to know if I had hit an area of my head covered by the helmet whether or not it would have provided enough protection to have prevented the bleed, that would be purely speculation. And granted if I hadn’t been wearing my helmet it wouldn’t have changed the outcome of this particular crash, but it’s not going to stop me wearing it in the future.

On a serious note, the main lesson learnt was in getting seemingly minor symptoms checked out quickly, even a long while after the initial injury.

Who knows whether the helmet would have made a difference had I hit my head on the actual helmet, it would just be speculation, though I’m certainly not going to stop wearing it.

The actual impact was taken wholey by my chin, my hands were still on the (flat) bars when I hit the ground, as shown by the grazes going across my brake levers and over the top of my hands/forearms. I suspect I was lucky not to break my jaw/a lot of teeth, 2 stitches in my chin and a chipped tooth was the extent of the damage, given I was probably travelling about 20mph. The site of the bleed (and the hole they drilled) ended up being about two inches above my left ear though, so had the hit been to the helmet it potentially could have dissipated the force enough to stop the brain bleed.

The condition ended up being a chronic subdural haematoma, which developed after the inital CT scan I had a few hours after the accident (which showed nothing out of the ordinary). Most worrying for me was that the symptoms took so long to develop (over three months!) and could easily have been ignored until more permanent/life changing damage had occurred. There is probably a lesson to be learnt about getting a check up after any serious head injury!
As it is I think I got very lucky, aided by bothering to get the symptoms checked at A&E and most likely my age/fitness making recovery more straight forward.

Edit to add: The bleed was not definitively attributed to the accident, but they were almost certain that it was, especially given the unlikeness of it being spontaneous/unrelated given my age.

Yes, I went to the hospital (LGI) straight after the initial accident in June. I had a CT scan that afternoon (although I remember very little of the day) which didn’t show an brain bleeding. Apparently I then suffered a chronic bleed, slowly building over a period of weeks as opposed to an initial fast bleed, which was why it didn’t show on the initial CT. It’s taken 3 months for the bleed to build to be large enough that it was pressing on my brain and starting to cause small seizures/episodes of numbness.

In terms of the initial accident, I have no memory of it. I suspect from finding it’s location on Strava that it was hitting a pot hole half way down a steep hill in Leeds, potentially without the best grip.on the bars.

You can almost imagine the Daily Mail headline:

“Selfish Lycra Lout doesn’t wear high-vis, throws himself on road, wasting NHS time and your hard earned taxpaying money”.

It’s all a big relief that treatment has gone so smoothly and easily and that it was detected. As I understand it, it could have lead to a severe stroke/death if left untreated/undetected, which was a little worrying given the lack of symptoms. Thankfully woke up this morning after last night’s surgery feeling completely normal. Will be taking it easy!

And I have the joy of dealing with the DVLA to see where I stand with driving to look forward to.

Nothing to add but that I love that descent, even managed to sneak into the top 100 on Strava (one of the few places I have)! It definitely earns the name Bake your Brakes for that segment, every time I get to the bottom the rotors are pinging, but I’ve not had problems with fade on SLXs with IceTec pads. Particularly the bottom couple of hundred meters are steep and having to stay off the brakes to hop the drainage ditches means you’re braking harder inbetween I find, in addition it can be really quite loose and gravelly when it’s dry, making it hard not to be constantly feathering the brakes.
Inspired me to go up and ride it tomorrow morning!

For a given area, it doesn’t matter what area, if the rain didn’t soak in/run off and just “stacked up” you’d have water to a depth of 1 yard in 60 mins. Or 0.5 yards in 30 mins etc.

Raced in the same race as her at BUCS downhill this April at Inners (to win for I think the third year in a row), she was phenomenally fast. Thrashed the rest of the female field by about 20 seconds on a 3 1/2 minute course. Fantastic to watch and well over 40 seconds faster than me!

Hope this isn’t the end of her riding bikes competitively in the future!

My previous bike was a blue 26″ BFe, it could have done with been a touch slacker and lower, but I absolutely loved it. This looks fantastic, would have to be in that same blue..

Roundhay Park – a few bits and pieces in there.

A bit of a loop from Meanwood Park – The Hollies – Scotland Wood – Adel woods (jumps) – Eccup Res (all along the Meanwood Valley Trail) is a decent way of getting out of town.

Further out, Ilkley Moor is good and Stainburn is excellent.

I’ve used the ACI double butted ones from cyclebasket too. 21p per spoke including brass nipples. There enough for my non-fancy wheels.

Just done a two day ride (road though) with the tapered one on the seatpost, just made sure it was tightly cinched down and had some vaguely squishy filling for the straps to dig into.

Really looking forward to today’s stage. I rode the Col d’Agnes a couple of weeks ago (though going up the side they’re going back down, then turning back on myself at the top), it’s an incredible beautiful part of the world. Hoping the tops aren’t in the cloud again!
