    @CountZero – great explanation, thanks!

As said above Western Red Cedar is good. It last a very long time (natural preservatives in the wood) and is light, thus easier to work with and put up. Feather edge board would be good for cladding.

It’s quite a bright orange when freshly cut, almost pinkish. It fades quite quickly though to a lovely silvery-grey. It also smells great when it’s freshly cut!

Noticed that petrol was 99.7p in an Asda in Leeds yesterday evening, first time I’ve seen petrol under £1 in the time I’ve been driving.

I use 32/19 on a 29er Inbred, a good compromise I find. The frame is great, it’s the one with horizontal dropouts and a gear hanger, in case I ever want to run t geared. I haven’t found I need a tugnut, a decent Shimano XT QR holds the wheel plenty tight enough.

A few things that echo what others have said:

    1. A normal cassette hub with spacers is fine – and allows you to change to geared if you ever want to.
    2. Get a decent cog when you decide what ratio you’re going to go for, I have a Stainless Velo Solo one that is showing no signs of wear even after 3 years.
    3. Don’t buy the On One tugnut if you decide you need one, it doesn’t actually fit/work with the Inbred.

I really enjoy throwing/giving/charity shopping things away. I’m pretty sure everything I own (apart from my bikes) would fit in my car. I am a student though so have no furniture etc.

A 1996 Peugeot 106. 954cc producing 54 raging horses connected to 145 section pram wheels, via a 4 speed gearbox. Simultaneously absolutely crap and fantastic fun. I loved it.

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll look into them.

I am competent with the axe/crampons and have a reasonable degree of experience. Sadly no poodle though..

Bump if anyone else has any other suggestions?

Ooh I’m good at this. Retaped new road bars before putting the brake levers/shifters back on. Makes it very easy to get a nice even wrap.

Also, didn’t refit the bolt that holds a square taper crank back on after fitting a new bb. Very surprised that the crank stayed on for 15 miles before falling off.

Snapped the stud off the bottom of a Talas cartridge in a pair of Fox 36’s by over tightening it after a service. I let the LBS fit the replacement.

Lowest pressure (879mb) recorded in the eye of a storm in over 30 years. It sounds like a really big one.

My Dad’s rolled his VW T4 last April when it had 206,000 miles. It was a complete write off, with pretty bad deformation to the nearside A-pillar. It was then scrapped.

It’s now reappeared somewhere with 60,000 fewer miles. Kind of worrying how easily something like that can happen. I wouldn’t want to be in another crash in it after seeing the damage.

Hopefully this will help people avoid cars like this.

Thanks for all the advice, I’ve just been to Go Outdoors and tried some on and happily come away with some Scarpa’s. They seem to fit well and aren’t too uncomfortable.

(As an aside, I was very impressed with the Go Outdoors discount card/price match, 10% off everything when you purchase a £5 card. Apparently if you can find any other shop (bricks and mortar or online) selling the same product cheaper they’ll do it for 10% cheaper again. Cashier told me this and 30 seconds Googling on my phone whilst stood at the till, I’d found both the shoes and a chalk bag for less elsewhere. A quick look at my phone and they accepted it as proof and gave the further discount. Very chuffed.)

I used a fork off a Surly Ogre on my Inbred. At least I think it was from an Ogre, it was the Surly one with about a thousand different bolts and attachment points. The one linked below but with 3 bolts on each leg as well for anything cages.

    Surly Fork

While it was good it was also very heavy (~1.2kg)

Does it have to be steel? I swapped to the On One carbon monocoque fork which is great and not massively expensive. It feels nicer to ride and more importantly is ~600g lighter.

Sent my Z1 off to be fixed after it wouldn’t turn on. Considering I’ve had it nearly 2 years and only had a month left on the warranty I was pleasantly suprised when they replaced the port covers/back/speaker as well as the battery (the cause of the fault), without any charge.

Does it not sometimes take a while for eBay (or Paypal – can’t remember which) to release the funds and let you access them? Some sort of protection for the buyer incase you’ve scammed them, so they can get their money back. Not saying you have of course. I’ve sold things and it’s taken up to 3 weeks to actually get the money into my Paypal account where I can access/withdraw it.

Did you have enough to eat? I find if I’m properly fuelled I can do 100 mile rides and be feeling okay during/after but if I don’t keep on top of it I just end up bonking, with results similar to what you describe, even on far shorter rides.

Nothing wrong with the BB7’s on my Inbred, I haven’t felt the need to change to anything else or upgrade to hydro.

I didn’t used to wear one for commuting and the. I got hit by a van. Very lucky to not hit my head badly, I left a sizeable dent in the front wing with my shoulder and only just missed wacking my head. I wear it religiously when commuting or going to the shops now.

Always worn it on the mtb or road rides though.

Maybe try the On One Smorgasbord? You can get the 2.25 in dual compound for £12.99 atm. I’ve been very impressed with mine fullstop, at that price it’s a bargin. Or maybe the 2.4 Chunky Monkey if you want something a little wider, although the 2.25 comes up quite wide.

The On One El Guapo aren’t bad and they’re super cheap if you get them while there’s a deal on.

Not much to add other than I am a student in the Earth and Env Department currently, I think it’s really good (although I have little to compare it to). The staff I’ve interacted with have all been great, from a student’s perspective. The uni itself is really nice and vibrant.

The riding is pretty great, once you get into the woods to the north of the city centre.

The architecture is good at the uni, I love the brutalist buildings, particularly Roger Stevens!

Anything that’s dead, the older the better. Apparently it tastes even better to her if she rolls in it a lot first. The worst was a nest of rotten eggs, the smell was truly horrendous. At least 10 washes and a very short haircut until she smelt good enough to come back into the house.

Also any food that falls from the table/kitchen units, or is left to close to the edge of the aforementioned spots.

I completely lost a nail a couple of months ago. After a week or so the nail bed toughens up and doesn’t hurt. It took about 4 weeks for the nail to grow back to where it’s visible and it’s now about half grown back.

I’d just leave it, it’ll sort itself out.

I just really like the look of thin, round steel tubes compared to chunky hydro-formed aluminium or carbon. I think it just looks right, and the ride is nice too (not that you can’t get that with other materials). As such I have a Bfe, an Inbred and a 531 framed road bike.

    Any excuse..

It’s a mess, there’s no indication as to which one you should be buying. It’s going to end up costing another tenner in postage by the time I’ve bought a new one and returned the old one.

Not sure if this will be an issue, but will a rear hub that will take a 9spd cassette be wider than the hub that may already be on it?

I bought this one , it’s not the one with the sleeve. I’ll try the sleeved one though.

The carbon in the steerer tube is just really thick, everything else fits fine (crown race etc.).

It sounds like she isn’t aware of the effort you’ve put into this, maybe as a newbie she expects something shiny for £400 (a considerable amount for a non-mtber). Go to Halfords with her, keep or sell the decent bike.

We have a lakeland/Jack Russell cross that’s okay being left alone but likes a good run out. She’s good on a long walk but hasn’t been trained well enough to be a trail dog (our fault). I love going on long walks with her, she’s good for 12/14 mile walk easily. She doesn’t seem bothered being left on her own for a while though, as long as she gets plenty of exercise.
