Another local here that might be up for a pootle round Wharny with some fellow STWers if it happens.

BTW Podge – I think we might have a mutual aquaintance. Do you know a Damo, with a P7?

The only thing that stops me running a Landy is the constant fear of it getting nicked.

The bloody things go walkies quicker than high-end mountain bikes in Bristol.

Maybe for the highest bike expense to skill and fitness level ratio.

It can be the “All the Gear no I-deer” award.

The Syren is very tempting as it’s one of the few short frames with a reasonable amount of travel – I just need to get my head around that linkage.

The linkage on the syren isn’t anything abnormally complex – it’s the same setup used on the Orange ST4, Commencal froggywhotsits and also on Giant VTs circa 2003. A proven and popular shock linkage.

Dead easy to strip and clean v12s, and the bearing is easy to remove, but the bushing on the inboard side is a bit of a PITA to prise out.

If you just want to kill the squeak for the time being, strip, clean and regrease. It’s literally a ten minute job to do both pedals with an allen key and a socket.

What? Dope testing? Seriously? Seems a bit much when this is a statement from their website:

Just in case you’re unfamiliar with Single Speed events they are very much grass roots level, the whole event is hosted by a group of guys, who off their own backs take on the organising of the whole event.

*Looks around air-conditioned room, sees approximately 80-100 computers each running between 2 and 4 monitors that spend 24 hours a day seven days a week switched on. Sighs.*

    Not me.

I’m sure the world won’t end – if it was an imminent danger they wouldn’t have passed it. BUT if you had a knackered shock bush on your bike, or your forks were knocking badly, you’d fix them. If you had a loose bolt on your bike’s shock, you’d tighten it 🙂

I’d be tempted to sort it out asap.

Even if it’s safe, the longer you leave a problem, the more expensive it has the chance to become.

I wouldn’t worry about that, I read ‘docklands’ and very nearly did a scouse accent.

Hmm, looking at the manuals I can’t now tell what the crack is with the Maxle, or which one one I have.

I asked the LBS before leaving with the bike how to use the Maxle and they showed me. Once everything is tightened up the lever is free to spin round. Everything is tight, and remains so after riding, but the lever is free to spin.

Now I’m wondering if it shouldn’t be like that. Dunno if mine’s a Maxle 360 or what.

That’s that way it’s supposed to be.

When it’s all clamped shut, the lever goes loose and thus can be positioned facing any direction you want.

44:18 for me and totally the opposite – only good on the flat, no good for hilly areas at all unless I fancy shaving a few years of life from my knee cartiledge.

Oh actually, on second viewing, I see that at full right lock the cable might be pulling. Sorry, my eyes were painted on for a moment.

I would do as you’ve suggested and swap that round to the other side.

I might be misunderstading what you’re saying but to me it looks like that routing would actually require a shorter cable, so you should be able to get away with it, no?

Whap the stem off, push the cable over the steerer and try it.

Used that combination for 6 frequent-saddle-height-adjusting years and never had a problem.

Panniers might be lame and make your bike handle and look pants, but it’s much better than having the weight on your body.

It took us 2 days, not going hell-for leather by any stretch, but carrying very little as we stayed in B&Bs.

I was saddened to see (in the Metro I hasten to add) that the poor girl felt the need to explain that her staggeringly vast thighs don’t wobble and aren’t cellulite

Thighs that appear to have been photoshopped down in the above pic.

She’s an Olympic track cyclist for the love of christ. Why on earth do we hide from the truth in the search for beauty?

There are very few areas of bike componentary where there is a definitive best product for everyone concerned.

Seatposts are one of them. And Thomson is – as far as I’m aware – that product.

Is the chain tension fine all the way round? ie it has no tight/baggy spots?

you could try bending the ring back with an adjustable spanner, or just replace it if you don’t mind spending a few quid.
