super tacky’s will wear out quicker, especially on the back. They will be better for ultimate performance, but do you really need all that grip?

Yes I was going to add this.

My last super tacky high roller (on the rear, front was in much better condition) was about knackered after a week or so’s hard dh in the alps.

I’ll never laugh at anyone wearing armour regardless of the trail.
Protection is a personal thing and I have no idea about anyones circumstances (injured, self employed, risk averse etc etc)
It’s just none of my business. They’re enjoying themselves and that’s all that matters.

    Exactly.

As for you seeing more people wearing it, I’d say its a case of it being far more affordable and easier/comfier to wear than in years gone by.

Yeh, it’s not much use to me at the minute I suppose, drop me an email (in profile) and we’ll sort something out.

I fitted a Hope one once, it was painless and worked great. Not the cheapest but one of the best.

Me too (in my prophet mx), the one with an extra extension on the lower cup to stop your forks hitting the downtube.

In fact it’s still in the (swingarm now cracked) frame sat in the spare room….

We had a cracking days riding in the peak yest too, nice fast and dry… In fact jon think we bumped into you at the mid way pie/cuppa stop…??
I could be wrong tho

ahh yes that one came with lyrics didn’t it, was it called the avalanche or something?
Mine’s slightly older, 2009 I think. That ones got a tapered headtube too, mines 1 1/8.

EDIT, posted that before your edit
The lower one looks the same, has that still got an 1 1/8 headtube or is that tapered too?

    Cheers!

You may as well buy one.
I’ve got a cheapo one, cost about 15 quid, it was good enough to use in the build of my kit car so i’m sure one would do the odd bottle mount now and again. Just be careful with the smaller (4mm) mandrels as they can bend/break quite easily, only a couple of quid for a new one tho.

Is it a case of getting what you pay for? They are dirt cheap. No excuse really though, obviously.

    Ragleys aren’t that cheap though!
The price is what put me off getting a bagger 288 (or whatever its called), ns surge is a lot cheaper and they look nice/well finished in the flesh.

All companies can have problems with qc though. Its how they react and deal with it that makes them a good ‘brand’ and sets them apart from the rest….

I use paypal a fair bit to buy stuff (linked to my bank account), the last few times it’s taken a good week for the money to come out my account. No way will they have ‘forgotten’

Wouldn’t personally bother with domains myself, had both 302’s and 318’s. The 302’s were awful and the 318’s were ‘ok’. If you want cheap go for an old (2006) pair of 66’s.
Totems (2010) are £450 at merlin, i’d go for those if you can stretch a little on the funding.

As said whatever fits you best.

I had my heart set on a fox flux when they first came out, went and tried one on and it didn’t fit my head at all.
Ended up getting a Giro Hex instead, really comfy, on my second one now as I cracked the other one and got it replaced on their crash replacement scheme (£35), excellent service. Also got a Giro piss pot and that fits bang on too.

    Looks nice.
Must be very similar to my orange big ‘t’ I had a while back, that was one fun bike.

Did the dmr’s have that ‘ridge’, as you put it, down the side of the fork though? I’m sure mine didn’t.

Just done a week in the sierra nevada on my crest’s and had several peaks rides on them too, no dings, run about 30-35psi.
The rear wheel is ‘slightly’ out of true now tho.
I ride fast but smooth (a lot of unweighting, a floater as someone mentioned up there  ) and always try and pick a good line, about 12.5 stone in riding gear.
Your riding style is the main consideration, if your constantly smashing into rocks (instead of up and over, or around) then prob not the rim for you.

I’m quite impressed by what i’ve put them through in the last couple of weeks…

On the other flip side, great service in Ches shop.

    Really?

I’ve spent thousands with J.E.James in chesterfield over the years (had my first mtb, a GT timberline, from them 15 years ago). I think their service has got worse and worse over the years and some of the staff are more condescending than ever. For some reason I still go there though and they do have some good deals on now and again.

You can then do cut gate plus as much or as little round derwent as you have time for.
I would take that over dalby any day of the week

    What he said :D

    Just a quick update.

Got back last week from an amazing week with ciclo montana

Went for folding single ply 2.35 larsens (f+r) in the end with 2 cups of stans sealant in.
The perfect tyre (pattern wise) for out there i’d say, fast rolling yet grippy. I did manage to put a small rip in the sidewall of the rear tyre though on the next to last day (on the run down from the big bull on the way to granada, awesome trail 8) ) which the sealant wouldn’t seal so just stuck a slime tube in and all was well.

The next time I go out there (which I’m sure I definitely will) I’ll still opt for the larsen’s but with a dual ply rear (as mark does) for some added protection.

Oh and the crest’s were fine over there too.

All in all, an amazing week with some top riding, top banter and excellent beer and food…

    Big tyre (2.35?)+narrow rim+low pressure=Burpage

The 2.35 highroller is quite narrow, comes up more like 2.1 at most and the crest is wider than most xc rims

    Thanks for the replies.

Yes the sidewalls are very thin on the exception series aren’t they.

I’ve got some used (regular, non exo) 2.25 ardents I can stick on, might just go with those rather than buy any more?
It’s just they come up a little larger than I’d like, more like a 2.5 high roller in size really…

Well that looked worse than I thought it would, quite sickening really.

Whilst we’re on the subject of the yorkshire air ambulance, I myself was picked up by them after crashing into a tree up holmfirth and breaking my spine  .
They provide an amazing service and I will always be grateful that we have something like that available to us should it all go wrong.

So please if anyone feels like making a donation to them, no matter how small then please do. There’s lots of ways of doing it, from playing their lottery to purchasing something from the shop to regular donations.

    YAA[/url]

Sorry if that sounds like a plea off comic relief  but its something that is important to me.

Well thanks for the advice, gone for the crest rims in the end.
Ordered them this afternoon from just riding along (who were very very helpful) :D

    Hope they’re strong enough now!

Perfectly timed thread this, think i’m going for a hardtail (dh orientated) again when the DH bike is sold.
Loving the white evil sov’s up there, are these rated for a 160mm fork?
How would one compare to a bfe as i’ve owned one of those before..?

Used some that came on my big t for a year or so.
Very heavy (over 6lb I think), seemed to blow though the travel too quickly, also can’t change the low speed compression (318’s have the blue knob on rh leg) to stop them diving so much under braking. Saying all that I still did the mega on them in ’09.
Better off getting some more suitable second hand forks i’d say.

Hmmm, not done the xc loop but done the uplift quite a few times.
The alpine would be a good choice for the DH, its not that technical there, but can’t comment on how good it would be for the xc side of things though…

Whats the weight saving compared to a 20mm bolt thru tho…?

I’ve not ran a normal 9mm q/r for a good few years, be nice to ride one again to compare and see if it felt ‘flexy’….

Did it in 3hrs 11mins , was aiming for 3 hrs so not too bad I suppose…
The 2 pint in the pub next to the finish went down a treat :D
