The main piece of advice about the prophet I'd give is swap your shock position from the XC position to the FR position, a much better ride without loosing that much of any 'pedalling' advantage the XC provides.

Yep, its definitely getting put into the 65.5 HA position…

Yep those wellgo's look a decent shape, bit of a bargain if they last.

One other thing that might help, i've ridden in skate style shoes for years (vans, etnies, dc's etc) now the sole soles on these aren't very rigid.
I started using some shimano am40's and noticed a huge improvement as the soles are alot more rigid and the pedals won't hurt your foot as much.

So, i'd say get some new shoes (am40's or five tens) to go with your new pedals, and u'll also benefit from the extra grip the soles provide.

    straitlines.
    penthouse flats.

dmr v8/12's are a really small thick platform, very old fashioned, u'll notice a world of difference going to a bigger platform.

    Bregante –
Orange Crush (just add £80), or Marin Rocky Ridge (add £150)

Yes and yes, 2 very good handling, confidence inspiring hard hitting bikes.
2 friends have got rocky ridges, love em.
Depends what kind of riding you want it for though…

cheers grumm, yeh seen a few of those knocking about under different brands, quite a few on ebay, was a little unsure of the quality of them tho..

Snapped my i-beam saddle right at the start of qualifying at the mega (dropping off the first snow bit) couple of years ago, had to do the full run seatless  obviously removed the seatpost to prevent any painful and embarassing er, 'intrusions'…
Personally i would never buy another one, i'd imagine they would be fine for a full on lightweight xc build tho.

Thomson post and gobi saddle for me at the minute, sayin that i've also manged to crack the corner of the gobi saddle, hmmmm…

    Hmmm, not good is it.

Not crank bros, but my kona wah wah's did it after 2 dh runs at wharnecliff.
Made me crash, close to spearing my leg, wrecked my rear mech chain wrapped round spokes etc etc, not good really.

I've heard of it happening with the crank bros before, happened to a friend of mine and of course all the internet stories about 'em…

SLX on my cotic and new Saint on the morewood, not had chance to try out the saint but i love the slx (with slx shifters) for the money, nice strong springs in the rear mech's (especially the saint) helps keep the chain on.

Also, i'm so glad shimano bought out the '2 way release shifter' means i don't have to use a sram shifter now, don't know how i used to cope with rapidfire..

Prefer the new shimano stuff to the x7 and x9's i had previously, also had an x5 rear mech couple of years ago, lasted about 4 month :?

    Go for the formulas…

I had a hope 6 pot front and m4 rear (both second hand) for the mega a couple of years ago, not really that impressed, i too boiled the 6 pot front (alot better once i'd flushed thru and bled with dot 5.1)
I did it the year after on some bog standard oem cheapo avid juicy 5's and found these better 8O
Currently running hope tech x2's on my cotic, seem ok for the money, really nice lever but not mega powerful (more of an xc brake anyway).

Was set on getting some formula 'the ones' on my dh bike for whistler but they had none in stock anywhere in the uk, so ended up getting the new saints (£300 all in with 203 rotors and adaptors from merlin, pretty good i thought).
BTW if they've still got good deals on the new xt disc brakes you could go for them, easily good enough to be fitted to a dh bike (so more than powerful enough for AM use) and very light too..

    'Hope' that helps.

Excellent downhill tracks that the locals have spent ages building and maintaining you mean?

    Wharncliffe is a brilliant place.

Yep well said, some excellent runs, love the place too.

Yep guy had his ransom 10 nicked (along with his 224), he bought it from hope so it came drenched in 'the green stuff', also had a gravity dropper, straitline pedals and obviously lots of hope stickers..
I posted it up on SDH a while back, no one spotted it as yet tho.
Has one been seen knocking around..?

BigCol – do you know if it's possible to perhaps arrange a visit to the Rolls Royce factory? I'm qualified to fly the things, but would love to get a closer look at the manufacturing and development side.

My dad made many of the patterns for the RB211, so I've always had an interest in Rolls Royce engines.

    Cheers,

    Dave.

If you can get a visit sorted make sure you come to experimental, much more interesting than production

I find after a decent ride i want something savoury, anyone else find this..?
Is it because during riding i usually take, a banana, jam sandwhiches and jelly babies, all of which are sweet/sugary..?

Post ride (at home) i like tuna salad cream (maybe some red onion mixed in) in pitta breads..
My mate sometimes brings morrisons steak pasties to eat in the van after riding, top drawer!
All washed down with a couple of cups a tea of course…

I found my patriot a **** to manual, quite alot harder than any other dh bike ive tried, infact I think it was the only bike I havent been able to manual properly. I even found my mates brooklyn easier to manual, although I think they are some sort of single pivot which doesnt make much sense.

I had an orange big-t for a couple of years, that was ridiclously easy to manual, now my mates brooklyn racelink i thought was pretty damn hard to manual, as you say both single pivot.

I'd say chainstay length is the biggest factor in how much effort is req'd to get the bike up into a manual position.

This is from a stood position, so nowt to do with seat angles

Yep, if your sat down then it aint a manual..

I'm not just a Llandegla virgin, I've no trail centre experience at all. How does the black here compare to other centres?

Well i was a trail centre virgin until this year too, after about 14 years of riding mtb's!
In a 3 day extended weekend away we rode brechfa black then red in one day then afan/glyncorrwg over the next two.
None of it that hard at all really on the cotic, i enjoyed the final descent on the red at brechfa and the final descent on the wall or skyline (hmm can't remember what it was called?) that finishes at the drop off cafe, would it be called jet lag or something like that, can't remember..

We then did llandegla the week after which was the easiest of the lot.

I can understand why people don't like them, but hey i enjoyed it…

When I got back to the car park, Mr Carbon Fibre had just returned form one circuit of the red. He wouldn't believe what I'd done, saying it was impossible on "that bike".

Ha ha, makes you wonder where these people ride. The black run is extremely easy, did it twice on the cotic with the forks wound down to 100mm for most of it.

    Still good fun tho, jedi said it perfectly;

mate, i love riding any bike anywhere

what BigCol's pic doesnt show is the outer part of the engine, essentialy a big carbon/kevlar/epoxy composite wraped arroud the engine to catch any blades that come flying off.

Not for more recent engines, kevlar wrapped fancases are a thing of the past, susceptible to moisture/water ingress.
See the 'ribs' inline with the LP compressor (fan) blades on the T1000 fancase above, these have now replaced the kevlar wrap preventing any 'high energy debris' exiting the fancase.

Not too long to go now and we'll be building the first XWB – I'm really looking forward to it. Nothing beats going down to the build line to see some actual hardware!!

    Edit.

Thinking about it now i'm wrong, as you said its just hp6 for cabin bleed, the venturi prevents the hp3 and hp6 mixing…?

I think i need to get back riding again or find something to occupy my mind

    jackal
    Free Member

The eagle eyed among you may have also spotted that in my first post it should be HP6 rather than HP3….

    :D

Well if we're talking cabin bleed (not bleed air into the bypass, as in the IP+HP bleed valves, to prevent compressor surge+stall..) then isn't it IP8 and HP 3 and 6 combined..?
Hp 3 and 6 exit via one common duct (via the venturi) at tdc of the 04 mod, think this is true for T500, 700, 800 and 900. I'm sure you'll put me right tho BigCol as i'm not a tech bod, just a lowly experi fitter

No cabin bleed on T1000 and as you've said electric start only via the vfsg's, as shown on the GA drawing above…

    BigCol.
Looking forward to building the xwb, should be a slighty different assy method aswell (from an engine build perspective anyway) by looks of it..?

When it's not a bright sunny day i find mine too dark in wooded areas, so i'd say a deffo no no for night riding. Think i might get some cheap clear or yellow for winter/night use…
