So why do some fellow mountain bikers feel the need to have a rather ridiculous beard ? I could understand if it improved performance or carried some kind of street cred. I am really finding it difficult to comprehend having such a monstrosity hanging off your chin.

Undo the caliper bolts very slightly, nip them up but not tight so they can float/move a bit and ride for a few hours, then do them up tight. Always works for me, absolutely no idea why. Failing that do this

My brakes suffer from this real bad – tried cleaning then with acetone and exposing a new surface but it did bugger all. I’ll certainly give the copperslip a go.

I’m pretty sure that if you changed the fork on a voodoo hoodoo (and maybe change the wheels – I found the stock to be pretty flimsy) you’d have what you want for cheap.

Having been a teacher (among other things) and now in the forces, teaching was far harder than deploying to Afghanistan, mostly due to the hours and the corresponding impact on my life and health. I might have been able to put up with that if I felt like the effort I put into teaching was appreciated or worthwhile but it wasn’t – attitude of the kids (more likely down to the parents) and the negative image in the media made it pointless to sacrifice so much. The attitude of Gove has just made things worse.

Back in uni around 2000 at Southampton I used to ride my bike around a fair bit. I swear the bus drivers were actively trying to kill cyclists; I was forced off the road frighteningly often.

I couldn’t recommend anything specialized armadillo – I’ve got nimbus on my (crappy) hardtail which has been relegated to commuting and I’ve had 3 punctures in the last couple of weeks.

I’ve also got a 9.9 and not changed a thing on it. To be honest it’s far more bike than I need but hey, it’s fun! Rolls noticeably faster than other bikes. I’ve had no problems with anything mechanical (that wasn’t my fault!) and all I’d change will be adding a dropper and maybe going to a single up front.

Brake cleaner can be acetone or harsher; a good bit more nasty than IPA.
