I would ask the mods to delete this thread as it may invalidate her life insurance.

And the Catholic/Protestant issues of Northern Ireland and S/W Scotland aren’t in part due to centuries old imperialism?

    ….. how ironic.
Whilst entrenched and polarized viewpoints like this still exist there’s not really much hope in resolving things is there? Lets try and remove/change any institutions that propagate sectarianism, including football, and hope that the next generation makes a better job of it.

Wondering if it could ever boil over into a northern ireland situation?

Not likely, if they are that way inclined then its only a short hop on the seacat/easy jet to NI.

Its not about preserving land in a particular state frozen in time for ever

I agree, that would be preservation, not conservation.

a – captive breeding of grouse is difficult and as far as I know not viable
b – do you want to pollute the gene pool / behaviours of a viable wild population with captive bred birds?

While what maccruiskeen says may be true for lowland game birds pheasant etc, it isn’t true for grouse and grouse moors which usually rely on a wild population of birds.

    maccruiskeen – Member
Grouse moors themselves (as the name suggests) are a managed habitat for grouse – patches of dense cover for nesting and young, with cleared patches of ground for fresh growth and food. If they were left to nature they’d be a completely different habitat. And if grouse chicks aren’t reared in captivity then those ones up an the hill near me must be hanging out in big net enclosures for a laugh

    Note the qualification usually!
It may well be that your local estate is rearing grouse in captivity for release, however my understanding is that this is certainly not the norm.

Unlike pheasants and partridges, grouse populations are not maintained or boosted by the release of birds which have been hatched and reared in captivity. Grouse cannot be bred in captivity. They are a wild, self-sustaining population supported by the management of suitable habitat…

Yes flat rate per trade. IIRC the rate dropped significantly if you did more than X trades a year. I think they also gave you some form of “trading overdraft”…although I never used this.

I used HSBC Invest Direct solely because it was easy to link with the rest of my accounts. No complaints, services and their online options were good. They answer their phones quickly, even during the height of banking crash when people were complaining they couldn’t get hold of their brokers.

The SNP have been backing off the independence issue in favour of a “whatever is best for Scotland approach”. They could have held a referendum early last term whilst Wendy Alexander was leader of the Scottish Labour party. The SNP ducked this opportunity, they know they will lose.

English outrage at these clearances was one of the factors in stopping them

Not sure about that, but it was the Liberals in the late 1880’s that recognised the plight of the crofters which is why there is still so much strong support for the Lib Dems in the western and northern isles. Well there was until Thursday!

mainly LondonEdinburgh based it has to be said

And crofting was a bi-product of the clearances. Landlords moved the tenant farmers off of the hill onto lowland and coastal crofts. These crofts were deliberately made so small and unproductive that the crofters would still require to work for the “estate”.

to claim it was an English plot is a bit disingenious don’t you think?

    Indeed.
