Not to contradict anyone but some times it is better to introduce a bike as an all round activity for fun, transport, experience, rather than a specific sporting activity, especially to girls who aren’t quite as obsessively focused as guy. I’ve found with several people, but most girls, that the best way to get them biking is to show them how much ground they can cover in a short time and where bikes can get them that they would not normally considering walking. Its sometimes best just to spend time on the bike adding in fun elements as the person gets more comfortable and familiar with the bike. Doing it this way also increases the opportunity for to get out on the bike rather than waiting for a single day to drive some where cycling specific and increasing the pressure to perform.
In saying that all the above places

Callendar, Aberfoyle, Loch Lomond & Arrochor

    are lovely locations.

    Where are you based?
Best thing for new cyclists is just ride about on a sunny day picking out the odd challenging line on technical feature but keep it chilled and recreational before leading on to more specific cycling days.
The Kelvin riverside path is a gorgeous rarely known ride. Nothing technical on path but there is opportunity for ‘organic urban'(landscaped land 😉 ) riding: small steps, bridges, short steep slopes etc. Also has the opportunity to stop off at pubs & parks.
Canal and loch Lomond route also. Dawsholm park (at top of kelvin path)

Funky (second) one seems to convey better what the event is about. like the speakers. is that a trials obstacle? 🙂

Very nice. I liked the lug lining on the original also. Would look good on the green IMHO.
Full build pics when finished please. 🙂

I’ve not done the sustrans route so dont know the surface type. I’ve ridden along the road which is nice enough. not too busy during the week and a reasonably smooth surface. Its a beautiful part of the country.

Is there any reason you couldn’t make a single speed left hand drive? I realise that the brake may present a problem. oh and the pedals may wind off. Apart from that though. lol 😀

    Upper body exercises as above

How many you do depends on what you want, big reps to bulk up low reps bigger weight for strength

I thought it was the other way round for weights. ie large weights at low reps for bulking up.

    1. Road riding for 17 years, only commuting for 8 years.
    2. 0 luckily. touch wood. I agree with the defensive/assertive cycling.
    3. 3 parked car opened, then closed, the opened door while feeding along the side of stationary traffic queue. Taxi pulled across the road and straight for me, jumped off bike in time. Person stopped abruptedly in front then started to pull out when I had planned to pass on the outside – hit the back of her car quite hard, dented it with my hand. oops. biggest stoppy I’ve ever done. 🙂

I do think we are fortunate there are not more serious accidents considering the myriad difference in cars and bikes: speed, mass, visibility, maneuverability, aggressiveness (on both parts),awareness …….

The weather over the last couple of years in the West of Scotland has been good during the month of May. I think it is surprising some of us that this weather is so dramatic at this time of year but then winter has lasted a good bit longer and this is the typical weather I would expect for late March early April. It has been very windy and short but frequent heavy rain for over a week now. Before that was quite long period of good weather.
How quickly we forget and how time drags when you cant get out on your bike. 🙂

forgot to answer you original question: I rode mine hard from new 8O.
TF should have lubed the sponges beneath the wipers. and put sufficient oil in lowers. they would have cycled them a couple of time so oil should be where it needs to be. Maybe not do a huge drop straight off but I’d have thought they’d be good to go.

FMI. What prompted the service? My bushings are needing done soon. Also I’ve wore though the stanchion coating, but still smooth and free as long as they have lots of oil.

Are they G2/G3 rotors? New rotors might help. Granted there’s not a lot of clearance.
Mine are fine. Bought new over two years ago. Bled once. I really like them but I’ve not spent time with anything else. If I had that problem I’d probably buy others though.

IMHO Hydros are just easier all round.
GF had tektro cable stoppers on her bike and in the beginning they felt as good if a little stiffer on the pull action due to cables, possibly nicer than my J7’s 6 months later of commuting only on cycle paths the cables were dirty and harder to pull, the brakes a also bit contaminated. don’t feel very nice at all. Most of this may be maintenance but my J7’s have had no maintenance and feel just the same.
Set up in board on the shifters my levers are perfect for one finger braking and only on the steepest fastest descents would I prefer more power which a bigger rotor would sort. Also I like the solidity of hydros, I don’t like the stretch associated with cables
also AFAIK most cable brakes are offically restricted to organic pads so will wear faster.

Looks OK. Similar idea as Pollock park I suppose. Good on them for doing something with some spare land.
:-)contour lines show only 10 metres of descent then climb. starts with a descent though which is quite unique. 🙂

Yep can always remove a link but wont that cause the chain to be way out of sync with the ring and sprocket and cause them to wear out fast?

How can a chain be out of sync with a chain ring? only if your ring and sprocket are the same size. If different then the chain will cycle through each tooth for each link. Wear will be even and constant, removing a link wont change anything.
Nice clean new chain will look nicer though 😉

Took my GF to halfords and got a Carrera for £200. all reasonable kit with cable disc and (heavy) sus fork. She loves it. Primarily for commuting but does do the odd bit of off road with me. Anyway, good bike at good price and half way house for you between the spesh and decathlon.

Why will taking a full link out of it be a problem unless your sliding drop outs are less than half an inch long?
Remove the link and all is well, as long as the chain is strong enough.

It seems a great bike to me. No reason why anything on it should be sub standard.
All you nae-sayers are just brand snobs or prejudice.
I dont think its exceptional value either. Specialized and Giant will do you a similar build for a similar price and thats with more inbetweeners and exchange rates.
    Spesh FSR XC Pro
    Giant Trance X4
Spesh Pitch Pro is only £1000
If these bikes from Big, reputable companies can produce bikes with respected frames then why can’t Boardman?
poor anything is not an excuse.
Remember that all the Boardman bikes will have been produced when the pound was strong.

I have stylos with GXP. I have just replaced the BB cups after a year and half riding, lots of it muddy. My GXP has been fine. The spacers have to be used as instructed in the install manual/leaflet. There should be no play at all once tightened. Mine a creakless and smooth on a 68mm BB with one spacer on the non drive side.

The pitch is not a ‘heavy’ bike for what it is and could be built <30lbs.
the stumpy is a great bike and can go down hills very well but may not be best if you a doing any drops regularly.
    Epic is very speed focused.
I think the biigest worry for going up hill would be the angles of the bikes.
Can you not go and test ride any of these?

    Session 88 FR?
Ask for you money back from trek (unless the price has gone up like other things). Bike not fit for purpose!? Buy another bike from wheelbase.
Is this a common thing with remedy’s or are you a unique case.
Did I not hear that they have beefed up the pivots for the 09 bike over the 08 bike.
What bike were you riding before and were you doing the same stuff on it?

I like the huge drop to grass. But best is all the standard trials skills that he has enhanced like the 360 spin side hop aswell as all the rolled stoppies, wheelies with spins and hops.

I had this problem. XT freehub was full of crap and was making the pawls miss the teeth. The clicking sound had been almost silent for months so that could be a tell tale sign. Clicking is back to near normal but I’ve not had it back as I’ve been using another wheel so I’m unsure if the problem is solved.

as long as the wheel track is concentric to the chain wheel it shouldn’t be a problem.
    SSS….just dont change gears.
Fixed FS…now that would be challenging (and interesting).

Humvees ripped within 4 months and repaired. Lasted 2 years then zip broke. Recently my singletracks split between stretch and non-stretch fabric. stiched at home now better than new. My Zymes are wearing great apart form the impractical popper.

Endura are just weird. Great looking, great pricing, great design, but seam to be strange sizes, variable update, (same year of Zymes, some had belt loops, some didn’t) fall apart at the stitching.

Might give Altura a go next.
