Many years ago I used wooden chopping boards, but eventually realised that the certainty of dis-infecting a plastic board in the DW vs the theory that wood’s anti microbial “properties” might work on raw meat microbes like salmonella and campylobacter, was compelling.

Now I save pretty wooden chopping boards for bread.

Sesamoiditis – a self diagnosed pain in the big toe joint?

Why are you sure it’s not gout? Maybe see a doctor to get a definitive opinion.

Really – if a negative. Unless the Grauniadh has changed the photo, the one I saw looked like a cloud against a sunset/rise sky.

    Seriously?

And yet the Guardian, BBC, and photos here, all show a comet looking exactly „like that“. As indeed is my recollection of Hale-Bopp from the 1990s. So while some comets don’t „look like that“, clearly some do.

    Comets don’t look like that.

    Really?

not for nothing was Courage Best described as “like making love in a boat”…

As I remember that was applied to Watney’s – long but not sadly missed.

Mine talked about « scenic views and historical landmarks at a low speed compared to my recent average. » Which is true, but so what.

Seems like another case of AI doing what AI does, even if it isn’t very useful in real life.

Maybe their new AI “Athlete Intelligence” system is taking too much processing power.

I’m kind of against the idea

I’m kind of against you or anyone else preventing me from deciding how my life should finish.

When it becomes the norm for the ‘Doctor’ to decide

And yet it has been in place in many more civilised countries for several years without the sky falling in.

best to make an AVC to get the tax relief

Almost certainly yes. But for those who don’t want to take financial advice from some bloke on the internet, it really is worth talking to an IFA about this, and the process for then getting your hands on your retirement money with the least tax.

    128rpm

    I’d call that spinning out.

Do you all want to see my biological passport too?

Dont be a silly boy now.

What kind of rpm were you hitting to get that?

    ?

If you’re doing a general ride you’ll ride at MTB pace rather than road bike pace

Which means without the resistance of MTB tyres you’ll be spinning out at relatively low powers. Many of us would not consider that “all good”. In which case the bigger chain ring will fix that, as others have suggested.

Being relatively fit fitter than your mates just adds so much more enjoyment / less suffering to mtb rides.

Just pais Specsavers their £60 this morning. Took 3 minutes and worked perfectly. The lady recommended periodic use of olive oil to stop reoccurrence.

One thing that seemed to cause wax buildup for me was in ear headphones. Now I only use over ear head phones (also a snooze band) and wax build up seems substantially reduced. Maybe the saying about nothing in your ear smaller than your elbow applies to headphones too.

    Thanks Sefton for this thread.

It reminded me that now it’s getting damp it’s a good time to take out my 9 year old Trek Farley. It’s great fun to ride up and down, until the Surrey Hills trails build up their winter mud – which unfortunately the front tyre floats over in whatever direction it fancies, makes for exciting riding.

It is quite hard to truly test anaerobic systems hard whilst cycling

Not in the Surrey Hills it isn’t.

So I’m 61 and my garmin tells me I’m doing plenty of low and high aerobic exercise, but need more anaerobic.

How does your Garmin know? – probably by looking at your HR vs your threshold heart rate: have you got that set correctly on your Garmin?

I’m 65 and my Garmin tells me I’m doing lots of anaerobic from the hills on road and MTB rides, so it’s probably not that difficult to do.

    A month away from 16 (M) & 12 (F) respectively

At that age lots of arguments are pretty normal. We had plenty of arguments about stuff like that with our two, at that sort of age. Now they are in their 30s they’ve both said, unprompted, that we were great parents.

I’m sure yours will be the same.

Michael Weiss has a good analysis of the situation in Kursk on TwitterX.

For those of us who don’t have an account with mad Musk for access to his X cesspit, what are the main points in the analysis?

I currently ride SPDs on the XC bikes, but I’m flat curious.

If I got a cheap pedal to try out like the £14 Nukeproofs from CRC on the other flats thread, what cheap shoes should I use and do I also need shin guards because of the metal pins?

I had a similar problem, and used BT Wholehome WiFi extenders to share the signal around the house. Although you may be connecting to any one of the 3 or 4 discs, this happens seamlessly on the same network name.

Other similar systems are available and may be even better.

In addition to some great suggestions above, hire some bikes for the day – it’s a very easy city to cycle around. (Although unaccountably there is no city wide cycle hire scheme.) Bike is a great way to see Djurgarden island and you can ride out there to lunch at The Blockhusporten Cafe – way better than the ABBA Museum.

A restaurant with a great view for a sunset dinner is Gondolen, on top of the Katarina Elevator.

And finally if you see one of the small Fabrique bakery chain pop in for a coffee and cardamom bun, or wonderful lunch sandwich.

The tyres on my fat bike are much too difficult to get off the rim for an in field repair, so I gave up carrying a tube for it about 4years ago.

Ive always managed to fix leaks with a worm, except for the unfortunate time I found out that it’s impossible to remove the tyre, and called out Mrs R.

I’ve stayed in a couple of holiday places that had the touch controls, they were terrible.

I agree knob controls would probably be a little better, but I’ve found after a week or two you get completely used to touch controls. It’s just a different method from the one you have used for 40+years.

If you think gas gives you ‘heat control’ then you’ve obviously never used an induction hob

    Absolutely this.

We changed from gas to induction with a kitchen upgrade and induction is outstandingly better, except for one thing: if you want to cook with a wok you need gas. I’ve used a flat bottom wok on induction and it was a bit meh.

For us the answer was a 4 spot induction hob, and next to it a dedicated wok gas burner.

Living: Stevie Wonder is the only one I can think of who would be worth “silly money”. And Kate Bush.

Dead: Bowie and James Brown (With Bootsy Collins) would each be an amazing experience.

Other than that, I just don’t think there are many others I’d really be that desperate to see. Does that make me terminally 1980s?

PS Seen Queen a few times – they were great. Radiohead not so much – more fun to sit at home and listen to the music rather than be at the gig.
