I just swapped a 1050 onto a new hope hub.

3 or 4 largest are on a spider, the others are all single steel gears with separate spacers.  Worst case for the hub.

    Looking for something better too.

Just paid 33% retail for a 2016 cx bike.  (Trek Crockett 9)

Good spec but bought blind, waiting for it to arrive. Bit of a gamble

It was an eBay buy, had been on for a while with the price reducing week on week.

Great thread. As interested in the components as the bikes.  The bits I spent hours looking at.

Taking a trip down memory lane.

    I don’t understand.

I have a white orange if it helps.

    Interesting.

My old roadrat is struggling to keep up on the faster stuff and isn’t really right for the few cx races I have entered.

Was thinking alloy frame with decent wheels would be better than carbon with lower end stuff.

A vote for mulefats being a very user friendly rim.

My hodogs are wearing out and I might just go for the same again.  It’s only dry or packed snow here so probably a different requirement.

I have just stumped up for some Nextie carbon rims. Will see how they compared, lots on good feedback for tubeless online for them.

Buy the one with the best/lightest wheels.

    Interesting thread.

Currently pedalling an early Roadrat with XT/average build, to and from work but also now doing some longer road and gravel runs.  It’s starting to feel a bit flexy on hard pedalling runs.

I bought a 2015 trek Farley last Christmas.

26×4 tyres and reasonably light. It shifts and always beats my expectations.

Great fun and where I am we always get a few months of snow.

Really surprised at liking it, and as above, probably not an only bike but a good compliment to the shed full.  On smoother trails I can beat my Orange 5 times on it.

Kind of getting sucked in to upgrade now.  Getting some trek carbon forks, Hope Fatsnos and looking at some Chinese carbon wheels.

    Isn’t it 0.25” gap?

Great fun.   Later 1.2 in the boxy shape are probably the best value.  They had a bit more power and go well.

We we had an 05 multijet ‘Sporting’ for a number of years, took it down to its homeland at one point.

Had a dodgy key switch and a weepy water pump.  Both only took about 30mins to sort out each.

Swapped it for an Idea, due to child seat space needed, and found something that was essentially a bigger Panda but handled worse.

I couldn’t see the point but its a long winter where I live and a buddy was having a great time on a fat bike in the snow.

Went a bought a a couple of years old Trek Farley 6 last Christmas, fully rigid and sized for 26×3.8 tyres.

Not sure if it’s the return to fully rigid or something else but it’s amazing fun and isn’t slow.   Turns out the Farley was not as fat as some and a pretty racey beast as fatties go.

Worth giving it a go.  Fits into my bike lineup nicely.

Not ridden that area but when I lived in Italy we staying around Torbole a lot.   Tons of tracks out that way.

Just south of torbole on on the east side there is a giant cable car so you can get to the top of Mt Altissimo and ride down.

Bit it hazy as it was a few years ago, but would go back there any time, fabulous area.

I used to be black with black spokes.

But if I have the luxury of buying wheels again I will give this some serious thought.

4th on the bottom row.  Posh one.   Would have loved a yellow one when younger.

Thinking I may need to download some songs today from the era.

Only ever very used a phone for music since my Sony Walkman W810.   One of my favorites although internet was a bit limited.

Incredible situation.  Hope it resolved itself and the police are there for your family when needed.

Thinking of a close family member living next to someone who was convicted of having illegal images on their computer.

I got a 6th on my first time out.

17 people have done the segment ever.

    I am happy.

Having been in the US for the last 6 years, Having to use Luton twice in the last 6 months hasn’t been fun.

Although i I also travelled out of stansted which after doing it weekly for a few years I found myself completely lost.

How many shops and how few seats?

it amazes me how little space is allowed for bags in the seating areas. People were tripping over and pushing etc… all seemed a bit crazy.

Nice bike.  Reminds me of the Honda CLR125  CityFly I bought to do my test.

Can’t remember the details (disappointed in myself but I think it was a 2000) bought it about 5 years old,  fitted new chain and sprockets, tidied a few bits etc…. and made my money back a few thousand miles later.

I remember anything more than 40miles was a bit of a chore.

Went to an SV650 after that really didn’t have a problem covering ground.

Just got my 8yo a Trek Superfly 24.  Great bikes but buying new is a bit of a luxury,  got 2 boys who love biking and they are 5years apart to both will get good use out of them.

Went with the 24 as 26 seemed to be a step too far, weight and size wise.    I got my first 26 when I was 11, bmx before that.  (‘90 Raleigh Mustang)

Was thinking earlier, as I was putting my commuter away next to my wife’s 13″ Spec Hardrock that we will be building his next bike.  Hope to make it a good project to work on together.

Should get 2 years out of the 24er though.

Seen a lot of posts about bottle bosses recently, is that the new thing?   What happened to packs?

i took a bottle on a fat bike ride today and for the first time since about 1994 (Ringle on Alpinestars almega) put it in a cage on the bike.  It got covered in mud and tasted horrible. Unlikely to use a bottle cage again for the next 24 years.

Four/stage 4 still top of the list then.

(also in the interest of internet pedantry my 2009 Five has the same geometry as the 2013 and the Reynolds tubing, just not a tapered headset or fat seat tube)

They were all greats and Hamilton is definitely a racer rather than a strategist.  There is more to come for him.

This is thread has just reminded me there was some truly great racing in the past and although uninspired to watch the current racing I might give it another shot.

I am kind of in a similar position. I have done a lot of fat biking this winter and have a 2009 Five in the garage as my main bike.

Realizing I would like to refresh the forks and have a dropper I know my old five with it’s straight steerer and 27.2 post isn’t ideal.

My quandry is to build my bits into a 2011-2013 five which fixes the immediate problem and will ride the same as the bike I still enjoy after the last nine years of riding.  Much like yourself

Other option is to look at a Four that will cost considerably more but is good value at the deal I can get.   (Not counting flying to the UK to get it)

Similar geometry to the five in terms of angles and length but lighter newer and shinier. Unsure of the future of 27.5 and don’t want to be caught out after only nine years on my outdated five.

Sticking with Orange as I live in the US and like to fly the Union Jack when possible.

Burning smell was off putting, as was the fact the doc was running really late and hurrying.

No real issues though, 2 days in bed, 2 to 3 weeks off the bike.

Hub width and tyre width are the older standard. (Not standard then)

same as my 2015 Trek I picked up just before Christmas for a good price.

I would have serious considered this frame if I was still looking, bit of a convert on the fat bike thing now.

Mulefats here, only ones I have ever run though.  Running 80mm and 3.8 tyres. Easy to on tubeless.

Not sure but I guess there is only really a step change if you go with carbon rides.

Charge 2 here.  Great battery life and good app.

It will only connect to the phone to give 1 type of message and doesn’t tell you about missed calls or messages.   Only alerts you when the come in.

Hmmm, liked them all but most have come and gone.

I guess my 2004 Cannondale Jekyll (600 maybe) first new and complete bike since my 89 Mustang. Really opened up proper biking for me and was more than capable for my skill level at the time.

My 09 Five is a close 2nd as it fits like a glove and again I can attempt anything on it that I am capable of doing. Kept for long enough to be grumpy old man out of date for most new standards. Only tempting to swap to a later one <2013 to get dropper capability, new taper forks and Maxle.

Did my first ride and it was in the snow out here in Illinois last weekend.

Bought a used Trek with 26×4 tyres, it is going to be really tough in soft snow but huge levels of grip on compacted trails. Generally after about 10mins any trail is compacted.
My Orange 5 with 2.4s went past plenty of fatties on the same trails just before Christmas.

Bought it to ride in the snow but also a good reason to have a fully rigid bike. Bit of fun with a completely different ride.

I am guessing no moving tent due to the health issues.

Not seen the most recent ones but one of the best parts for me was the office guys thrashing their cars around the parking lot in ep3.
No big budget required, everyone having fun.

Record every fuel fill, mileage and amount. I now only write down the computer read out and don’t even calculate it.

Done from the old days of distributors and carburetors when I actually looked at the numbers and adjusted them.
