I’ve never seen Hexstatic live – something I hope to change in the future

I saw Hexstatic at a festival a few years ago and they were amazing. Have seen a few dj’s with synced visuals but none anywhere near what they were doing. Mrs isto doesn’t really like dance music and she loved them.

If you want other suggestions, search Youtube for the Nightmares on Wax Boiler Room set. It is superb

I know that one cheers….it is a fantastic mix.

Forgot to mention the 70 mintues of madness , that’s where listening to mixes began for me and its still right up there as one of my favourite mixes.

I’ve never been a huge fan myself apart from the first album and a couple of songs here and there. My wife however loves them and loves Dave more specifically……so needless to say I have seen them live fairly recently.

It is formulaic “dad rock” and does lean dangerously towards the middle of the road. But they really do put on a good show live and they do really seem like genuinely good blokes. The Sound City film also renewed my respect.

Unless you were doing the most memory intensive stuff a budget of £700 should get a decent laptop. However you will need to supply more information in order for someone to find the best laptop for your needs. NAS wise I would look to Synology. You will need to add to your budget the hard drives to add to the enclosure.

What really takes the biscuit is when you see a single person driving an empty car with a bike on the roof or boot; they must really lack imagination.

I think maybe lacking imagination is a bit dramatic. As stumpy said above different people have different circumstances. I can “imagine” putting my bike inside my car but as I am confident my bike is securely fitted to my car and not going to cause an accident I am quite happy to put it there. It also works out quicker for me to do so for the reasons stated above.

It doesn’t upset me if I see someone in an estate car with a bike in the back.

It is even worse when preceded with “We are where we are. Now we have to concentrate on ……..”

    No f**cking sh*t Sherlock.

It is then usually followed by some mumbo jumbo about transparency. Obviously so we don’t end up being where we are again.

Put bike in boot, close boot. Done. I’ve used roof racks. If you believe it’s quicker to put a bike on a roof rack, and lock it on a roof rack, than it does to place the (complete) bike in the boot then you are deluded.

A bike rack definitely works out quicker for me as I would have to remove a baby seat, put the seats down and then cover the boot. I concede that if you have a bike specific car such as Northwind where the seats are permanently down and some carpet covering the seats then it would be quicker. I still think I am not delusional in assuming that for the majority of users who do not have this luxury the difference is minimal.

Two bikes on the roof can half mpg.

As I stated before this may have an effect of around 10mpg at a guesstimate. This only halves the mpg if your car does 20mpg. If it does 60mpg then you are still getting 50mpg. If you are that worried about mpg then you shouldn’t be driving a car that does 20mpg.

@jambalaya, it is a bike…..it will cope…..just like the car does. Security reasons like the OP has stated I can understand. But worrying about the bike getting wet and dirty seems a bit odd.

MPG is fair enough, but if you are driving a newish car doing 60Mpg I would guess that it is not as big an issue as when using a less economical car doing 30Mpg.

    jimjam

Because throwing it in the car is much quicker than attaching a towbar rack or putting it on the roof rack

It takes no time at all to secure the bike to the roof, especially with 591’s. I would say the difference (if any) is minimal.

As the OP says he is putting his bike in the car so he can head straight to the trails so for him it definitely makes sense.

I’m also not sure why you would want to put bikes in an estate. That’s where the people and dogs go.

I have a new Octavia estate. Was going to get a Superb but the new Octavia is a fair bit bigger than the old one. Huge amount of legroom and big boot so is really competing with class above. It is also pretty new design whereas the superb is about to be replaced. Drives better than my old sline A4 as well.

Some really good links on this thread, especially yours Somafunk. I know about half of them so the other half is going to keep me busy for while. Cheers.

Actually, no. It stands to reason that the majority of good music will have been produced in the past. If like me, you like hard rock/metal/heavy metal, a genre that’s been around since the mid sixties, then there’s about 50 years of stuff out there to listen to.

To me that is similar saying that the majority of action films have been produced in the past so I am only going to watch old action films. Your point is accurate but the attitude behind it slightly defeatist. There are good new bands producing hard rock/metal/heavy metal.

If I was a full on muso, I could understand how you would be passionate at seeking out new stuff, but not me. I am not hip, cool, trendy etc and have no desire to try to be.

I also have no desire to be hip, cool or trendy. Some may see an inherent link….I don’t really care as I am just interested in discovering both new bands and new music to listen to.

You don’t have to believe – its a FACT

Yip I’ll agree with that. Think what I was (somewhat clumsily) trying to say is that when people claim that all new music is dire and that all old music to awesumz they just couldn’t be @rsed looking anymore.

Suggestion sites like this can be an easy way to find some new bands based on your favourite bands.

By checking out different sites such as Pitchfork, Clash, Tiny Mix Tapes, Mojo, Uncut but then mostly ignoring the reviews and making my own mind up by listening to them myself. You can stream samples on some of these sites or just YouTube them to make your mind up.

Also by listening to lots of podcasts whilst I am at work and taking note of tracks/bands I like. Shazam also comes in handy when hearing tracks whilst watching tv shows/films.

I am a great believer that here is just as much good new music out there. You just have the same passion to find it as when you were a spotty kid with a ghetto blaster/patches on your denim jacket/posters on your wall. That said the majority of the stuff that hits the charts these days is sh1te.

Unfriend your friends , close your account, learn to hack so you can remove all trace you ever existed on the Facebook servers (shouldn’t be too difficult they are always having security issues), take a pick axe to your PC and then have a shower. You will feel much better.

Bansksy is just a vandal, but whoever improved this one is an artist:

Yeah c0ck & b@lls….very creative. If you watch Exit Through the Gift Shop Banksy says that he doesn’t care if his work is defaced or painted over. That is part of the point of street art – it is as far removed as possible from the stand behind a rope, no pictures please world of the art gallery.

I see it as a valid art form but understand why people dismiss it so easily.

That stackoverflow thread is the funniest thing I have seen for a long, long time.

No problem, first time I read it in work I was laughing like a maniac. It does make you want to get more creative with your comments….after all they are going to be viewed by a somewhat limited audience.

I haven’t coded in C++ since university. Since then I have used Delphi and C# with a few bits and pieces thrown in along the way. Is it not possible (even easy) to write spaghetti code in all languages?

Or do you think C++ and the framework lends itself spectacularly well to this outcome?

    Favourite comment from link above:
//Dear future me. Please forgive me.
//I can’t even begin to express how sorry I am.

Sounds more a case of poor documenting/commenting in existing code.

He can’t expect you to accept the position without informing you of the remuneration you will be getting.

So far as the email checking – can this not be done via some sort of alert system e.g. if a particular email arrives that needs to be immediately addressed then a text is sent to your phone? Or do all emails need to be responded to?

Thanks for all the ideas. Leon estate looks a definite possibility. But looks like another Octavia is on the cards.

If you can get the new 2.0 TDI. Very economical yet powerful as well, so nice to drive. Not much in between it and the new tdi vrs and its quicker than the old one. If not too bothered about power the 1.6 TDI is plenty even though it is a big car it’s also a very good engine so copes well.

Skoda Octavia estate. Was going to get the Superb but didn’t need that much space its mahooosive. They were doing a good deal on a new one (0% finance and free servicing) so for sake of hassle free driving went for that. Really pleased as new engine is awesome. Stuck roof racks on so is really good for bike trips.

I bought the new Octavia it’s got basically the same boot space but slightly less leg room in the back.

The new one has more boot space and more legroom as they extended the wheelbase. Would definately recommend the new model if you can get one in budget.

I am a strictly confined to the bedroom DJ…..I see it as a hobby just like playing a guitar. I have had 1210s and a mixer for 15 years or so but these days I make mixes on the pc using Ableton. I might go to hell for this since I have a stack of vinyl sitting there. But it is so much cheaper acquiring mp3’s and using software such as Ableton.

The other alternative (which I hope to get eventually) is using a timecoded vinyl setup such as serato. This means you can still mix like its vinyl but use mp3’s you have erm…acquired.

Cheers for all the suggestions, very helpful. Might see if I can sample some of those in a local bar and then make my mind up. Could be an expensive night. :D
