Bit of a drive from Best but we used to eat here a lot when we lived in Veldhoven;

irelanstFree Memberno doubt a Scotland independent now would have some tough times ahead with horrible deficits. Most folk who back independence understand that
Really? Because the SNP were telling everyone they would be £1100 per person better off before the last referendum.
Long term an independent Scotland looks a much better prospect economically
Why?
and don’t forget – because Scotland economy is so small it would not take a huge number of companies expanding or relocating to Scotland to make a serious difference.
Or leaving and your deeper in the red.
irelanstFree MemberI did mine about 18 months ago, it took ages for the bruising to show, maybe a week and then my whole side was purple and black – it looked quite impressive. As most have said Ibuprofen and Belgian beer was the ‘cure’.
irelanstFree MemberWant to be depressed aracer? 2:07 would only just get you into the top 100 in the UK at under 15 level! It wouldn’t even top the U13 age group this year!
irelanstFree MemberHad a quick look and the Iffley festival of miles was won with 4:37, by a guy who’s ranked in the top 1% of the UK (UK registered athletes, not general population). He runs more than 100km a week every week and wins a lot of local races, so I’m guessing you’re right and your mate’s wrong.
Zippy – lots slower than surfer, 18:13.
irelanstFree MemberCav should have taken Blyth’s wheel
I would imagine Blyth with have a few words – he rode an almost perfect race in support right up until the point that Cav thought naa I’ll follow this other bloke up a blind alley.
irelanstFree MemberI use a Lenser SEO 5 LED, works OK for gentle offroad/towpath type stuff at a steady pace (around 7:30-8:00 min/mile pace), a bit lacking in output for full on threshold type runs.
irelanstFree MemberNot Salomon if wet pavements are involved.
I’d second that, I only have a short warm uo from my house to the ‘trails’ and if it’s wet then I take it very steady wearing Speedcross. S-Lab Wings are a better bet on more mixed terrain.
irelanstFree MemberThe key thing with Wiggins is whether the corticosteroid was an appropriate clinical tool given his symptoms.
My understanding is that at the time that the TUE was granted and the triamcinolone administered, Wiggins wasn’t experiencing any symptoms, it was taken as purely a preventative measure.
From the Brailsford interview in the Guardian;
Asked whether it was right that Wiggins appeared to receive the TUE as a preventative measure, Brailsford said: “You don’t wait until you have an asthma attack to take a puffer.”
irelanstFree MemberProbably get the ‘should be on the cycle path’ every other week, whilst actually riding on the cycle path.
A few weeks ago I had the passenger of a white van have a go at me, “Oi you just hit my wing mirror” I should have said “yes that’s right, whilst I was riding inside the designated cycle lane which you ignored so you could squeeze past I purposely hit your wing mirror with the back of my rucksack” instead all I could manage was f-off.
Most vexing one was when a women in a convertible let me out at a junction and then pulled alongside at the next lights;
me “thanks for letting me out back there”
her “no problems, I’d rather look at your arse than your face”Given she was at least 20 years younger than me, I’m still taking that as a compliment!
irelanstFree MemberThat image would indicate that the bare minimum width for a cycle lane would be 2.25m. During my commute I cycle along a number of roads where the ‘cycle lane’ is significantly less than that – in fact it’s probably less than 1m wide in a lot of places especially when you take into account wheel swallowing potholes.
To my mind this sends a dangerous message to motorists, even if they stay out of the cycle lane (and that’s a big if) they go sailing past inches away from clipping someones handlebars.
There should be a minimum cycle lane of 1m then a hatched area of 1m then a SOLID white line. Anything less than that and it’s more dangerous than mixing it with the cars.
This is a favourite part, cycle lane squeezed to <0.5m, traffic island squeezing cars in, it’s lucky there’s a droped kerb to hop onto the pavement!
irelanstFree MemberMaybe not the most elegant solution but I use a mini PC (Intel NUC) on the network running Google Drive, it syncs all folders between NAS and cloud. Laptops then run Google Drive but only sync a working folder. I have to manually move things from the working folder when it gets a bit bloaty but that’s easy enough and can be done anywhere (usually at work :oops: ).
irelanstFree MemberPeople really seem to want/covert Range Rovers for some reason
Have you ever been in one? My sister has one and every time I have to drive for more than an hour I wish I were in one rather than any other car I’ve been in. They are silly expensive, ridiculously large for parking etc. but really, really comfortable for long journeys.
irelanstFree MemberDo you input the weight of pasta you have consumed?
Yes you can do that.
Weren’t the calorie counters on all these devices found to be massively (25-30% out) inaccurate as they are missing several absolutely key pieces of data needed to calculate an accurate figure?
It doesn’t really matter how accurate the values are as long as they are precise. What is needed is a repeatable method to compare calories on a day to day basis, it doesn’t really matter what the absolute calorific value of the food is.
irelanstFree MemberA few people have alluded to folk like this. I wonder what percentage of those being discussed are Aspie, that sounds like very stereotypical traits.
I worked in Eindhoven for 5 years which is apparently the ‘smartest’ place in the world – it also has one of the highest levels of autism.
irelanstFree MemberUtterly ridiculous idea
Not entirely, there are compulsory bike lanes in Holland (and also lots that aren’t). On my old commute to work it would have made some sense to ride on the road for a mile or so because it was shorter, the cycle path took a more scenic but considerably longer route. The cycle path was compulsory though which meant that everyone used that instead of mixing it with the cars and lorries.
I would agree that the infrastructure needs to be fit for purpose and properly maintained for it to be an acceptable alternative to the road though. On my current commute I have the chance to ride on a segregated path but it is littered with broken glass and potholes so I miss out the worst sections and ride on the road.
irelanstFree MemberFor those of you who think that people with an X and a Y chromosome and internal testes, makes them male, here’s some reading.
OK so I read your piece, and first paragraph states;
People with this condition are genetically male, with one X chromosome and one Y chromosome in each cell
I’m not sure what point your trying to make?
irelanstFree MemberI wonder how many men are secretly alarmed that a woman can be so fast?
I would guess not many, as has been said before the winning time in the womens 800m wouldn’t be competitive in a mens race – I ran faster at uni and didn’t even make the track team.
Just because it “chose categories” doesn’t mean they have to stick to them.
Which is why the IAAF tried to introduce a quantifiable measure as to who is eligible to compete in the womens category, CAS ruled that there is not enough evidence to suggest using testosterone levels is the correct measure.
So what should be used?irelanstFree MemberMen’s will be between Tom Dumoulin and Chris Froome
Dumoulin has a broken wrist doesn’t he? That’s got to be a problem on any climbs.
irelanstFree MemberIt’s going a little off topic, but there were concerns at the time about the Yorkshire roads at the tour;
The van Vleuten crash was sickening, the impact was hard and the fact that she was lying motionless for some time really didn’t look good for her. I hope she can make a full recovery.
Back to the actual race, I thought Lizzie rode well (pretty much unsupported), it was a shame she didn’t quite have the legs up the last climb to stay in touch and I guess the rest of the group lent on her on the run in. I think the Dutch deserved the win, they rode a smart race with a very strong team.
irelanstFree MemberUKAD cannot call on the mobile as it constitutes advance notification of a test
The tester can phone, from the WADA guidelines;
If the specified location is the Athlete’s house or other place of residence, the DCO should ring any entry bell and knock on the door as soon as he/she arrives. If the Athlete does not answer, the DCO may telephone the Athlete to advise him/her of the attempt in the closing five minutes of the 60-minute period.
Froome was in exactly the same situation, in a hotel and the reception staff would not let the tester know where he was. He took it on the chin and admitted that it was the athletes responsibility to make themselves available, but he wasn’t looking for a technicality to get himself off a ban.
irelanstFree MemberWell I stupidly ran home from work along the Thames through Oxford. It was pretty hot and I still feel a bit sick, on the plus side I did see 2 young ladies sunbathing topless on a boat
irelanstFree MemberMine (yr5) had a school wide water fight yesterday afternoon – seemed like a brilliant plan given it was 30deg.
irelanstFree MemberDoes making them all family members then mean they all use the same Gold subscription I have automatically?
Yes. All of the Gold content will be available to the family
We originally set my daughter (10yrs old) up as a child but it was very restrictive, in the end we created a new adult account for her so she can play Battlefront etc.
irelanstFree MemberNot sure he could do a great deal about the elective surgery in New South Wales to be honest.
irelanstFree MemberFor 50 off I would probably make a fixture: Ali plate bolted onto the bed of the machine, dowel pins for location and then a toss up between edge clamps (like the one in your lower picture: you can get them from WDS) or just cap screws to clamp the parts in position.
Edit: for 3mm plate I wouldn’t use a vice unless I really had to.
irelanstFree MemberMike Bushell and Gregg Wallace, if there was a UK wide village idiot competition they would need sudden death penalties to separate those two.
irelanstFree MemberWe did it for a while, mainly because I was doing a fair bit of rough shooting at the time so had easy access to a variety of meats. We also had a local supply from a poultry farm for chickens and ducks which we kept portioned up in freezer in the garage with the ice cream!
It was a bit of a faff – cleaning and portioning everything. We never really worried about salmonella or anything like that, our little one (at the time) was told not to mess with the dogs food, and it was scoffed down in minutes anyway.
I’m not shooting much now, so we’ve gone back to dry food. I can’t see any difference in the dogs condition.
irelanstFree MemberI’d vote for Mo Farah, best in the world at his discipline for a decade.
And my ‘minority’ sport nomination, Alan Scotthorne
irelanstFree MemberDogs can be more temperamental on a lead, I imagine they feel trapped so can get anxious when another dog approaches them.
irelanstFree MemberI’m not sure you can put all the blame on Roy, the players have to do their part. I do think he made too many changes going into the last game but even then we were the best team by a distance and If Vardy had scored his guilt edge chance we’d have been laughing. We had plenty of chances to win the game against Russia as well. His substitutions have been positive on the whole (Vardy, Sturridge & Rashford) all slung on against Wales.
IMO the biggest problem is up top, none of Sturridge, Kane or Vardy know who is the 1st choice striker so every game they seem to be playing for their place, and are reacting in different ways (all negative) – Kane seems like a rabbit caught in headlights, Sturridge wants to do it all himself and Vardy doesn’t seem to know what to do if he can’t run the channels.
I’m not his biggest fan, but from the games so far only Sturridge is going to change games out of the 3, so stick him up top. Rooney in behind having a free role at No.10. Alli, Lallana and Wilshere/Henderson in behind with Dier sitting and relying on Rose and Walker to provide the width.
irelanstFree MemberThey need to get John Barnes in for a bit of coaching;
But you must get to the line
They’ll always hit you and hurt you
Defend and attack
There’s only one way to beat them
Get round the backIt was useless trying to thread a way through 10 men all inside the limits of the 6 yard box. Get to the byline and get the defenders turned around. So far it’s been like watching United, possession, sideways passes and naff all end product.
irelanstFree MemberThe few times I’ve returned anything recently the shopd have accepted bank statements, as long as the value of the transaction was higher than the cost of the goods they were happy.
irelanstFree MemberDoes it get any easier?
No, you just go faster, farther or both!
“Thighs pounding” sounds as though your quads are taking a hammering – is it down hill? Have you been over-striding? Try to land your foot under your hips rather than out in front.
irelanstFree MemberDepressing thought for the day: I don’t want to have to tell my daughters that they won’t be able to go and work in other countries like Daddy did. They’d be stuck at home, unless they emigrate.
How will that change? I’ve worked abroad too, and sometimes I’ve needed a visa, sometimes not. I’ve worked in the EU alongside non-EU people who seemed to get by OK without having to emigrate. I’m currently working in the UK and sit between a Kiwi and Canadian, they seem to manage OK without being EU nationals.
irelanstFree MemberI was in Marseille in ’98 when it all kicked off. Me and a few mates who didn’t have tickets watched the game in a fan park surrounded by other fans and families. All bags searched for bottles and metal detectors on entry so everyone was ‘clean’. When England scored the Tunisian fans charged the English, bottles, knives, machetes the works. We managed to climb over the fence to get away before being forced back by French riot police. I’ve never been so scared in my life, and I am forever grateful for the couple that ushered us into their apartment to hide.
I’m not saying there aren’t some horrible individuals who go away with England (although some will probably be supporting their own team this time) but the attitude and methods employed back then from the French police were disgusting, it would appear they haven’t changed.
irelanstFree MemberI was told by a physio that you should see a noticeable improvement in 3 sessions at the very maximum, any more and you need to find a new physio.
irelanstFree MemberI still think it sucks donkey balls. Ironically, so does our party leader
At least Cameron waited until the pig was dead!
