The ice hotel in Sweden. -12 outside in the day. -4 in your ‘room’

Did you go in the summer? it was -38 at night when we went! I got a telling off from my wife because I “let the cold in when I left the door open after a bathroom visit”. She slept in her thermals, normal clothes and the thermal suit, proper romantic it was.

    We’ve stayed here a few times before;

    http://www.kasteeltenberghe.be/index2.php?lang=EN

It’s a little way out of Brugge but on a direct bus route and it’s a B&B but it’s a proper castle!

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

Mogrim, my long term goal is to try and go sub 3, I see that as one of the milestone marks. I’m hoping to get a proper winter in, run a few cross country races and get a pasting in those! Then make a full on effort for Rotterdam. I’m going to gradually up my running over winter and drop a couple of bike rides, hopefully stay clear of injuries and see how things go.

Nosemineb: good work on the <3hrs, you should be proud.

I was thinking of making a mockup out of something bendy, and casting a male and female mould. Then I could squash the carbon between them both.

Your part might be suitable for that method but generally speaking I wouldn’t do that. I did try that method once and the results weren’t very good, I ended up with voids and lots of slippage between the layers of cloth (although that would depend on geometry). IMO, female mold with bladder, or male mold with vacuum bag is a much better method.

I did a fair bit a long time ago, mainly in glass but some carbon for model gliders. Most of the stuff was cloth over foam core with UD stiffeners which was then bagged and I used an old compressor from a fridge for the vacuum and a hotbox made from plywood and a fan heater to speed up the cure. I could get fairly accurate and repeatable results on the profile.

I did make some parts using female molds and bladders but unless you plan on making a lot then it’s a fair bit of effort and soul destroying if you don’t get the release prep right.

There is loads of information on model aircraft sites. Oh and microbaloons are one of the coolest things you will ever use.

Staying in the resort hotels gets you into the park early, get in first and onto the favorite rides before the crowds arrive. Only stay in them on the days you want to go to the park though, they aren’t anything special.

If the children are young (maybe <8) then the character meals are good fun. Also, if they are young then expect them to get tired, there’s a lot of walking/standing around so although it’s expensive a sit down meal is a good way to give their legs an hours rest.

My daughter is the same, she has a mountain bike but “you don’t use your mountain bike to go to the shops on” so wanted a city bike.

    We went to Decathlon and got one of these;

Your daughter is a bit older than mine and taller but they do 24″ wheeled ones.

Just about to look into the “barefoot” craze, suspect it’s not an option for me offroad though.

No reason why it can’t be done. Something to bear in mind though; I went for a run around the woods on Sunday with a friend who is heavily into the ‘bare foot’ stuff. I couldn’t see much difference between the sole on his €120 ‘bare foot’ shoes and my €40 cross country spikes.

Friends who have Garmin HRMs all use Polar belts with the Garmin transducer plugged in, I think some models need a bit of stanley knife action to get them to fit.

Is there any reason you are tied in with Google drive? If you set up a Skydrive account there is better office integration so the file should be relatively unchanged once uploaded.

I think it will go to one of the classics riders. Sagan and Gilbert are too obvious and are going to be marked men. So I’ll go for Kreuziger as an outside bet with Stannard the best placed Brittish rider and Bosan Hargen being the best of the Sky lads.

If I was going to place a big each way bet my money would go on Sagan though, he just rode away from a top class field in Montreal and looked unstoppable.

    It’s nanny rules;

“When you need me but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me but no longer need me, then I have to go. It’s rather sad, really, but there it is.”

It sounds like your son is just a bit unsure of her at the moment, it’s a big change even for so a young one, so I would be tempted to roll with it for a few more weeks at least, maybe being more vigilant when you can?

There doesn’t have to be anything specifically wrong for a child and nanny not to get along though. The one time we had to let the nanny know it wasn’t working she was fine about it and recommended someone else who was fantastic.

We went through a similar problem last year when my daughter (6yrs at the time) had a broken arm so couldn’t ride her own bike or even the tag-along. The solution for us was to do what the Dutch do, she sat on the pannier rack.

Overtook up to about 4th and the guy didnt want me to go past. He would sprint like hell on the wider bits then hold me up for the rest of the lap

That’s racing isn’t it? I don’t think you can expect a person to surrender when racing for position.

just don’t see why we’re spending money to provide meals for kids who’s parents can afford it?

You could just as easily say the same thing for education or healthcare or any number of ‘free’ services. What about the other end of the scale, the people who send their children to private school and use private healthcare, should they get a tax break?

I think the naysayers labouring the point about free school meals being available already are missing one of the fundamental points. There are lots of people who provide their childrens with meals who don’t qualify for free meals. Unfortunately what some of them provide is rubbish, Waitrose sells unhealthy food as well as Lidl, it is these children that the proposed scheme will help.

I would be straight down to the shop where I bought the Garmin with a copy of the SOGA in hand. They should last longer than 14 months.

but I think it irresponsible to expect strangers to financially support your decisions.

You go mountain biking, sometimes in the mountains? If you had an off and needed a medivac would you be happy to personally pay for the helicopter and medics or would you be happy for strangers to financially support your decisions?

I wouldn’t get one just to measure cadence, it’s a fairly easy thing to count for 1 minute (and a distraction from the suffering). It’s like having one on a bike, once you get a feel for what 90RPM or SPM is then you know if you are going too fast or slow and never really look at it.

    Are you from ‘murika ?

A guy that I ride with sometimes is from Texas and I honestly thought he was taking the mickey when he mentioned that you can’t ride on wet trails over there.

I think it sets it up pretty nicely really for the next few days, some of the gaps are big, but if someone can get 45s today then it starts to get nervy. I agree that it’s not a huge tour to add to the palmares and can’t see Wiggins risking his Worlds taking risks on greasy roads but he seems up for it and in good form.

For some of the other riders though, Quintana, Martin etc. beating a TDF winner in his home tour would be a scalp worth having, so I think Sky will come under some pressure and won’t be relishing the thought of their wet day in Wales.

As mentioned above, I would suspect it thinks the numbers are text. Even if you format the column it doesn’t always make the conversion until you edit the text in each cell(so for example if you type in the number).

If the list is short then go down each cell in turn pressing F2 then enter, if it’s a long list then in another column just multiply the value by 1, this should convert to a number.

I used the watch for the first time in anger yesterday for a semi-offroad half-marathon (some tarmac, some pavé and some gravel tracks). It was 50:50 open heathland and the rest was fairly dense pine forests and the GPS measured 21.07km so (assuming the course measurer was right) that’s within 30m of the full distance, I’m happy with that!

The main features I used on the watch were the km splits and average pace, it helped trying to keep to my average through a tough headwind spell around 15-16km where I was stuck in no-mans land between two groups, looking at the data at home I was over 190bpm for those few km. As per Surfers comments earlier, if I’d been sticking rigidly to a HR I would have had to ease off quite a bit and would have lost some time.

I ended up with a PB for a half’ as well, just missing a sub-90mins by a second grrr.

Not EVERYONE in the states is pro gun, you know. There’s a lot of heated debate about gun control, in fact.

Yep, especially if you’re black and live in Florida!

We were in the States on holiday in the summer and whilst in a Walmart I was looking at the gun counter in amazement, shotgun cartridges on the shelves not even under lock and key FFS. There was a childs size .22 ‘squirrel rifle’ with a pastel pink stock. I pointed it out to my daughter who said (bearing in mind this was in Oklahoma so a real gun toting state) “Daddy, why would little girls need a gun” and to my surprise the guy behind the counter said “that is a very good question young lady”. Why?

I ended up getting the Polar for two reasons. Firstly it felt better than the Garmin on my wrist, the strap felt nicer. Secondly I got a blinding deal, €189 because it was the display model vs. €299 for the Garmin.

It was quite amusing watching the shop guy nervously watching me whilst I checked both of them for GPS lock outside the shop, you could almost see his brain ticking over wondering if he could catch me (I would bet he could).

And with the money I saved, I managed to get some new racing flats

I distinctly remember bringing two iPads home but I’ll be damned if I’ve been able to get my hands on them since, they seem to be glued to my wife and daughters hands.

They use them for facebook, surfing, email, TV, facetime/skype, homework, games and controlling the TV and my wife has recently started carting it around in her handbag and using it to take photos and videos, you can hear my constant tutting in the background of all the video.

    Thanks for the replies.

Surfer, it’s interesting your views on HR use, I’ve pretty much always use a HR monitor for training (and do now) the belt doesn’t bother me. I’m guessing for tempo and intervals you run to a specific pace?

Pieface, I do seem to be in the same position as you and are coming to the same conclusions. One thing I would say though is that I’ve read a few bad review of the 210, charger connection issues being the main problem. I’m not too worried about navigation or bike use so much, I have a Garmin Dakota for that, it’s just a bit bulky for running with.

I’m going to have a look tomorrow and try some on. I’ll probably end up buying something completely different and doubt I’ll get out of the shop without some new shoes!

    SUMIF will work,

    =SUMIF(B2:B12,”Customer Name”,C2:C12)

Where B2:B12 contains your customer names, the quotes contains the name you’re looking for, and C2:C12 contains the value of the projects. It doesn’t matter how many times each customer appears in the list.

Interesting, or an example of manufacturers trying to manipulate the consumer? Single serving items should have the nutritional information listed by serving not per 100ml or 100g

Or the manufacturer simply complying with the EU guidelines for labeling?

True enough, but there’s not much fruit in a “fruit shoot”

My daughter likes them if they are diluted a bit. The bottles are a handy size as well, I use them for running sometimes, a full size bottle can be clumsy if your only out for an hour.

If you knew someone anorexic, you’d really want to help. You’d have sympathy, your messages and suggestions would be carefully thought out and delivered sensitively. That just doesn’t happen with obesity, and that’s probably half the problem.

I’ve experience of anorexia with close friends and I think you’re wrong. There is just as much criticism (if not more IMO) of underweight people it’s just that there are less of them about. Some of the comments are similar, ‘just eat a few pies’, ‘skinny bitch’ etc. but then there’s the nasty Auschwitz / junky related stuff.

And in a similar way to how overweight people with medical conditions are lumped in with the people who could do something about it if they want, “skinny” people are lumped together with people with eating disorders. My wife is considered “skinny” by most people; and often gets snide remarks about being anorexic / bulimic which she isn’t (or ever has been).

I agree with the greeting kisses thing. I thought I had it sorted; someone you don’t know = handshake. Someone you know = pretend kiss on cheek. Someone you know well = kiss on the cheek and a hug. Then you throw in the French, 2 kisses, that’s fine. And the Dutch, 3 kisses, that’s fine as well unless you’ve misread it and they’re German in which case 3 kisses is way too familiar. Even that gets confusing though because what if the French person is thinking, ah the English only like one kiss, so they pull out just as you’re going in for the second. And what happens when you greet a French man married to a British woman? Kissing the bloke more than the woman seems wrong. Or what do you do when a good friend comes over with someone you don’t know very well? Do you give one a handshake and one a kiss with a squeeze? It’s a minefield.

On the whole bill splitting thing, I’m a splitter. I would speak up if I thought someone should pay less or would chuck in a few more quid if I thought I needed to though. Friends that we eat out with regularly all know that the bill will be split and seem happy with it. If we were going out with people for the first time then I would ask up front if splitting the bill was OK with them.

Do you know what the aerofoil section of the existing rudder is? If it is a NACA profile (very quick Google suggests NACA0010 as a common profile) then it is easy to create a DXF from scratch, which you can then scale to the right chord length.

Sometimes, my wife occasionally likes a glass of bucks fizz and most places just charge for the glass of champagne but some price it as a champagne cocktail which is usually at least twice the price. We’ve even been to places where it has been cheaper to buy a bottle of champagne and a glass of orange juice than a single drink.

€28 for a beer is taking the piss – regardless of what it was and where you were.
