Funny you should ask – just been using mine skiing today. Kept freezing and locking up whenever the camera was started. Each time necessitating a battery removal to try again. Blimmin nightmare. Now trawling the forums to find out many other people experiencing similar.

Started skiing then boarded for about 5 years. Moved back to skiing 5 years ago, preferring the versatility of skis. Boarding is great in powder (skiing is also fun in powder) but any other type of snow conditions give me skis any day.

GF is Austrian and her and all of her mates have moved back to skiing.

I have a newfoundland (large) – at the beach the other day there were a number of orthodox jews. Anyhow they came around from behind a cliff and the dog bounded up to say hello before we could stop him.

There were several children a couple of whom started screaming at which point the dog got thought it was a really good game and started bounding towards them quicker.

2 kids who were now clinging on to their Dad’s leg peeled off and started running and screaming for their lives. The child (prob 7 years old) ran straight through a rock pool in which the he fell over (being orthodox he had the skull cap on, the pig tails and the unsuitable beach attire). He then hid around the other side of the cliffs.

Anyway we got the dog and apologised…

I can confirm that some Jews really are terrified of dogs.

1000 doing skyline in a year. Utter nonsense. What’s this, propaganda justification to not bother replacing when building the wind farm?

Used to have a lwb poptop which was great. Recently hired a hi top in nz. Loads of extra space in the back and felt roomy (although with the old one and the pop top up its very roomy). More storage space, cupboards as well.

If you’re sure you don’t need to go under barriers (such as at the beach) I’d go hi top.

    I’ve got one (6’4” 100kgs) its a starboard 9’8” with about a 30 width and 140 litres.

Bought it off the bay a couple of months ago.

Its quite tippy but ok when glassy. Only take it out when its pretty small and not big enough to surf – also when its uncrowded. Its a lot of fun good to be on the water with that point of view.

Looking forward to summer evenings paddling around the gower.

Just been to South Island in Jan. We hired a “wilderness” campervan based on reviews online.

They are a good price (similar to KEA spec but cheaper) and the van was superb (VW t5). Really well designed interiors, excellent to drive, good clean bedding, proper glasses and cutlery, subtle design which doesn’t scream grockel. Having owned VW campers in the past I was very very impressed with them.

On the other hand Wicked campervans which we hired in Oz – wouldn’t go near them again.

Brakes OK but try changing the pads trailside with freezing cold fingers. That retention clip is an utter pain.

I’ll be buying another set of XT’s soon.

I got an ex demo kombi similar spec. Got sunroof. Ambivalent about that. Dsg which I like. No trip computer which I’d like. Mf steering id also like. Kenwood head unit sat nav thing as well which is a bit rubbish. Seat covers also worth it and the 2+1 bench in the back.

If you think this will be the only tri you do then I wouldn’t bother, any sort of suit will get you through 750m ok. Bearing in mind though that most people don’t just do the one tri.

There again if you spend 25 quid on one from Lidl only to wear it for the 1 event after which it will just be hanging up in your spare room then I’d probably just hire one.

True the tri suits are pretty flexible but for a first time breast stroking tri maybe a bit of overkill.

A big -1 for lezyne for me.

Have the mini pump and track pump – they both use a screw on chuck. I’ve lost count of the number of times they have unscrewed the valve core as well when taking off the chuck. (Even had to abort a tri after it happened 3 times on the same tyre). A drop of gt85 hasn’t helped.

    Much prefer my topeak morph.

Had one removed on a 54 plate bmw 5 touring. Done 100k miles.

Eventually had a bypass pipe and remap done to cure loss of power after spending 700 on exhaust manifold which bmw were 90% sure would sort the loss in power.

This didn’t fix loss in power and BMW diagnostics flagged the DPF. Didn’t want to spend the 1500 on the dpf when I wasn’tsure it would fix it. So had the bypass and remap done (badly at Longlife exhausts once they’d hacked the cat off thinking it was the DPF).

Didn’t fix loss in power – next problem was according to BMW “probably” turbo at which point i sold the car on the bay having spent 2 grand trying to fix the problem.

From all the hours and hours of research i did it seemed like the pricey dpf is a total cludge of a fix for euro V emissions. And Trainer BMW and prob most main dealers would be were only too happy to replace one expensive part after another without using donor parts to find the real cause of the loss in power problem.

Moral of the story – don’t always assume its only the dpf : could be faulty turbo causing oil to clog up the dpf.

Trekked the inca trail 12 years ago – just at the end of the rainy season (around about March I think). It wasn’t too busy – maybe because of the time of year. Booked it in Cusco the day before.

Up there with the best things I’ve ever done.

I used to have 2 – females. Can’t remember if they were spayed or not.

They were quite smelly but lived outside in their hutch in a sheltered spot. Had them when they were young so quite tameable and did not use to bite. To train them I used to wear a medium weight pair of cotton gloves and shove my finger down their throat when they bit.

They used to spend quite a lot of time inside running around – they occasionally did their business inside but, as the floor was not carpet, pretty easy to clean up.

They were really good fun as pets – watching them going mental running after a table tennis ball was great. They would fall asleep on your lap but expect a smelly jumper.

We took them ferreting once – but the sight of a rabbit bolting from an un-netted hole screaming like a baby with a ferret clamped on its eye was a little unsettling.

Skiing for me – used to snowboard however the skis are much more versatile – any slope from ice to powder to moguls to ones with flat spots is good.

Its also more technical IMO you can look pretty proficient on a snowboard after a week, skis take longer.

Snowboarding incredible in deep powder – skiing is great as well in powder but a bit more difficult.

My gf is austrian – most of her friends are going back to skiing for its versatility.

That’s very impressive for the non DSG 140.

I used to have a 174 and could just about squeeze 40 driving at about 60mph on a run (congested motorway).

I took a 180 dsg for a test t’other day. The salesman said it seemed a lot more thirsty than the 140 especially around town. It also didn’t feel that fast compared to the 174 – alot smoother though.

    Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like its well worth looking into the BB7’s.

Re a couple of the points:

Prefer to use pads from superstar etc. In my experience I find that they cost 1/2 the price and last almost, if not, as long.

I’ve read a few posts where the k18’s lever throw extends too far when the pads are pretty worn – because I’m tight (see point about superstar pads) I like to ride them pretty much to the metal.

My main gripe is the retaining pin on the hayes pads to enable the toolless pad change – very fiddly and almost impossible with cold hands.

What I did to my stroker trails was to use a syringe to bleed them from the master cylinder down – pushing the pistons out in the process. I then closed the system and pushed the pistons back in individually using a 6mm allen key placed between the pistons (taking care of the metal part in the middle).

I'd spent ages trying to bleed from the bottom up but the pistons would only move about 1cm after bleeding.

I find surfing the most technically difficult by a long way (harder than golf for me) – it also requires some stamina as well as ability to relax and hold your breath when it gets big. Its way more difficult than windsurfing and way way more difficult than kite surfing (the wind is always there).

Judo was pretty hard work but maybe boxing tops it (never done it).

The highest VO2 max has been found in cross country skiers.

Gymnastics must be hard as well as decathlon, but Brian Jacks from superstars could kick everyone's arse and he was judokan.

    +1 on the Alastair Humphries

You really need to get both Moods of Future Joy and Thunder and Sunshine.

Read one on the outbound flight to nz and the other on the way back. Both really good reads particularly the second.

Like others I too found Mark Beaumont's book a little tedious.

Depending on the complexity of the site you want to create:

If its fairly simple, static content etc then I'd always go for google sites, you can also have yourname@yourdomain.com but using the excellent gmail interface. Its about 50 quid, I seem to remember to set up and google obviously are responsible for the availability of your website.

More complex and I'd develop a site using google app engine and again have google deal with all hosting issues.

If creating an e-commerce site then I'd prob go for a packaged solution and anything more then, for me, I'd develop it and host it using fast hosts.
