Hardtail friendly or is it a road heavy route that suits the faster gravel bike?

When mine goes offline, which is a few times a year, the only way I’ve found that gets it back online every time is to:

    turn off the internet router

    Turn off the hive hub

    Turn off the hive receiver

Remove the batteries from the thermostat

Then turn everything back on and put the batteries back in.

It’s a buggy system, I should replace with a wired Nest solution instead really.

I highly recommend this one. It’s riotous descent after riotous descent the whole way round. I reckon it’s the best ride I’ve done in the UK so far in 18 years of mtbing. Weatherproof too

Is it possible to replace a 2 pot Shimano SLX caliper with a 4 pot? No need to change the lever?

These! Been an absolute revolution for me after years of trying waterproof socks etc and they’re 12 quid. Total no brainer.

    Your brilliant classic rides section:

after page 2 I get “oops something’s gone wrong”.

No pictures showing on the ride reports either.

Also I tried to post a comment on one of the rides to explain that one of the descents is now unrideable and a diversion is required but got an error. Ride 117 for reference.

Builth Wells earlier this year was way busier than Ruthin last year so hopefully we’ll at least get another Builth in

Yep. Gutted. Loved those events. Got to email them for a refund now. Don’t know why they can’t just issue one or contact us

Yeah shame about that sanitisation. We used to call that the baby head rock descent. You just went wherever the baby head rocks sent you haha. And then inevitably fixed the pinch flat at the bottom in the freezing rain and wind (pre tubeless).

@snotrag Nope, hardtail arguably the perfect bike for it. I did it on an Orange Clockwork last year and have ridden hts, singlespeeds and full susses on it in the dim and distant past. All were good fun. Full suss this year, only because I bought one and want to use it!

    We’re travelling down from Ilkley.

Aaand this one from Pateley. Stop off at Brimham Rocks cafe for a brew at the halfway point and marvel at the geology and the fact the area used to be a Norwegian river a few years back. Great little ride

Yes, as well as the classic above you defo need to add the out and back from Horsehouse to your list. 3 decent climbs and 3 brilliant descents. All rocky BOATs, so as fast as you dare with plenty to pop off

Yes, because over time I moved my alloy HT/s on and bought steelies! Major difference.

Plus of course HT riding style improves over time, relaxed arms, floppy bendy elbows and floppy bendy knees are key for me.

Maybe some fork tuning, tyre setup required too? Cockpit mods like someone said above.

    But as I said… steel!

Are all these prices 3rd party, fire and theft only? If so I’m gobsmacked at the prices! Surely you’re not buying your little darlings cars so expensive the cars themselves need insuring?

It was a massive and very horrible eye opening experience and to be honest has impacted my view on work and people significantly.

Oh yes, I can relate to this.

Wow. Been there! 6 months of the worst stress and it got very messy cos I didn’t see the GP when I should. Still worked, stupidly, and ultimately got made redundant after I told my boss I needed a different job. Then followed a complete and unexpected career change at 45 and I’m loving it 6 years down the line.

The few people I spoke to at the time said you are not alone. I felt very alone as I couldn’t find anyone who was or had gone through the same.

You’ve done a great thing opening up on here.

Get to the GP quick, get signed off and see whether meds are recommended depending on your current symptoms.

You’re going to need to change that job but you can deal with that later, for now, getting sleep and health sorted is no 1 priority. Don’t get that sorted and will get even worse trust me.

If you want to PM me I’ll happily give you my number for WhatsApp or phone chat as it’s a bit clunky on this forum.

PS swap a drink for a walk round the block

Oh, I didn’t know there was a layer for open access… That sounds useful. How do I find that on the Android app? I’ve only got 3 layers available, standard, topographic or aerial

OP I wouldn’t worry about it, the stw forum has form for endless helmet wearing arguments going waaaay back to the old style forum 17 years ago and probably before that! Some things don’t change

    I could go on… So I will

The elyte’s weight meant it handled more like a normal bike, whereas the full phats smashed thro everything and were a real arm and upper body workout due to their bigger mass. I’d be happy with either there, no preference either way, it’s the available power and the way it’s presented that would make me choose a fully 100%

I’ve test ridden the elytes, that one and the top 2 in the range, twice, and a load of full phat ebikes from Orbea, yeti, trek, Merida and Marin. The elyte is great but I’d choose a full phat any day of the week because if I was going to have an ebike I’d want it to be fully e and not “you have to pedal at a high cadence to get similar results” e if you know what I mean. The elytes I tested were all fitted with an optional extra battery because the standard battery doesn’t last as long as one on a full phat bike. So add an extra battery into your costs. The elyte and the best of the full phats were all great descenders. For full phat, the Trek and Merida were both amazing, but the Marin stood out above them all for bang for buck (less than 4k currently inc extra battery makes it tempting). Easily as good as the bikes twice the price, unfortunately it’s not a great looker tho imo (sanity Vs vanity :) ).

Get a steel frame. Can’t recommend my Orange p7 highly enough, what a great bike. Mate has one too and he loves his. Most definitely doesn’t feel dead, completely the opposite, springy.

Ha I’ve felt like this after a 10 year hiatus to the dark side. Came back to MTB last year and immediately started injuring myself, quite badly on one occasion. I think it’s a combo of being 10 years older, rusty skills and more gnarly local trail builds. I don’t struggle on all the natural stuff I used to ride (Yorkshire dales classics for example), but the new skool trails like Golfie whoa, right out of my depth!

I’m considering entering this but can’t find any useful info on it. Is it 10 hrs overnight or during the day? Is there camping and/or food available?

Is there a source of info/faqs anywhere? I’ve looked at sientries and https://www.nevisrange.co.uk/event/10-under-the-ben-2024/ but they’re super vague unless I’m missing something?
