Why, exactly? iTunes does everything it needs to do…

Apart from find Album Art if the iTunes store doesn’t stock the album, or finding the correct album art if the iTunes store stocks an album with a similar name. I had trouble with quite a few, I wouldn’t mind if it was some obscure Bolivian nose-flute playing thrash metal band, but most of it was reasonably recent and mainstream.

    Try Media Monkey.

If anyone has seen my of the Gin Blossoms ‘New Miserable Experience’, let me know. I’ve got the case, but the CD’s not in it (and that really annoys me, ‘cos I’m really anal about putting CDs back in the right case)

Cheers all. Getting some work experience at a local school sounds like an excellent idea, I’ll look into it (a friend’s a teacher so hopefully may be able to help).

Project – I’m 34, so have had, indeed currently have, a ‘proper’ job. Now I fancy teaching ;-)

    robbo – GTP?

headfirst – really? I thought they were crying out for Physics teachers. I’m not sure I could teach the other sciences (didn’t even do them to GCSE). I might be able to teach Geography as well I suppose.

So are you open to the bitch offer, or do I need to advertise more widely? You’ll get a corset allowance.

Junkyard – thanks. Although I pray you didn’t teach English (and, for what it’s worth, I can use Google and I am aware of the entry requirements and the bursaries).

Duckman – what do you teach?

    MrsF/willyboy – thankyou

Junkyard – perhaps nightschool to polish up on your basic literacy?

There’s a slight chance I may be made redundant later in the year which, to be honest, I’d be quite happy about.

    I’d say about a three.

    Chr1st you two, get a room :-)

The money side isn’t really an issue. I’d take a hit at first, especially when I was training, but now that teachers are actually paid a reasonable professional salary I don’t think it’s be that long before I was earning pretty much what I earn now. Anyway, one cuts ones cloth accordingly.

Fair enough. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

willyboy – out of interest, what was it that made you decide to teach in the first place?

A chap quoted on the Beeb:

“Parents can take control by taking the mystique out of it by giving them a taste and educating their children about alcohol and abuse of alcohol.”

I don’t know that it would be a very interesting discussion

That’s because you tend to have discussions at people, rather than with them.

We all know that the best way to reduce a teenagers curiosity about something, be it booze, sex, drugs, etc etc is to deny that the thing exists and hope that they just lose interest. Discussing these things with them from an early age, so they are informed and educated to the perils and pitfalls of indulging irresponsibly, is obviously a ridiculous thing to do and will lead to no good at all.

    not by a fair bit.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. Anyway, the 456 is outstandingly useable for everything I’ve ever tried. Most of that is what is unfortunately described as ‘XC’, you know, riding one’s bike around, up, down and across hills.

The geometries of the two are exactly the same, I think the 456 is a gnats heavier. Buy the 456, there’s really very little in it.

Classic Robbies decor (beaten copper tables, farm tools, horse brasses), great location, and beer.

Great Beer and Robbies pub are not two things commonly associated with each other. I should know, I used to work in one.

I think you’re refering to The Las O’Gowrie instead.

    That’s the badger, thanks.

And how could I forget Mr Tom’s on Cross Street? Serves a great ‘Manchester Salad’ (bowl of chips) :-)

Anyone been to that downstairs old public toilet further up the road from there?

The Temple of Convenience? Yup, again, years ago. The one round the corner from the Beeb on Oxford Road (Jabez Clegg?) is/was good too.

How could I forget – The Springvale Beer Engine in Sheffield. Again, more for the memories than the beer.

I removed my Mono Minis and fitted BB7s and haven’t looked back. Piece of pi$$ to set up and adjust, no f*cking around with bleed kits/bits of tube/corrosive fluid, nice lever feel. Manually adjusting the pads takes seconds (plus makes sure you’re aware of how much pad you have left).

Oh, if anyone wants to swap a 180 roundagon disc for a 203, let me know…

The Jolly Brewmaster, Cheltenham. Truly excellent beer.

The Farmers Arms, Guiting Power. Great unpretensious (sp?) country pub in the Cotswolds, and there’s not many of them, believe me.

The Peveril in the Peak, Manchester city centre. Is it still there?

The Lantern Pike, Little Hayfield. Been a while, but I love it.

And, for memories alone, The Jolly Sailor, Davenport.

I heard Adelle interviewed recently she said something quite profound: “You have your whole life to write your first album, 6 months to write your second.”

    That’s a very fair point.

Then they ran out of back catalogue and were bloody rich, so couldn’t draw on the same creative atmosphere that inspired their good stuff.

So they took the wise decision to stop. I wish U2 would do the same, have you heard their new single? Dreadful.

I must try the Grapes of Wrath again. I read it when I was 19, didn’t really ‘get it’.

    2nd Stone Roses

I’d say Oasis – Def’ Maybe was brilliant, WTSMG was overblown and average, everything since has been rubbish.

Guns’n’Roses. Appetite FD is awesome, everything since is overblown and average. And before someone says ‘what about November Rain?’, that is exactly what I mean.

Spot the theme? Band has incredibly successful first album. Studio throws money at second album which band uses to put anything they possibly can in the production – strings, 7 minute+ tracks etc etc, which results in lack of focus and subsequent mediocrity.

Good thrillers: Enigma, Archangel and Fatherland all by Robert Harris

Other books I’ve enjoyed recently(ish): A Thousand Splendid Suns (Khaled Husseini), Cold Mountain (Charles Frazier), 1984 (if you have to ask, you really need to read more books), South (Ernest Shackleton)

Favourite book ever: Lonesome Dove (Larry McMurtry).
