I’ll bet a lot more people were watching him descending the Galibier at the TdF than were watching olympic XC. And I bet that clip on the LH bend on the descent

That picture is perfect for illustrating where your body weight should be on a bike (road, MTB or otherwise) when you’re on the limit, regardless of the BC coaching advice.

    2. C2W increases your tax free allowance by the amount ‘borrowed’, rather than reducing your salary and so affecting the top rate of tax that you pay. So everyone saves bottom rate tax, even if you’re an STW IT director on £500k.

You may need to finesse that a bit, because as proposed it would actually affect your marginal rate because of the way the 0% band passes through into other bands.

Stolen Goat used to do some. I have one but mine is not in x-small.

I’ve had mud and sand get into the rim void. It’s only the really fine stuff that gets in and dries to a powder.

    *Very few actually.

I’ve heard some groups of nutters suggesting that riding bicycles off road is a good idea when we all know there are perfectly good roads available.

See if you can get a 23/24 colour way reduced to 50%?

The geometry is probably the same.

Challenge the pension admin folk (nicely). Be clear about the evidence you have and ask them to confirm the instruction they had to remove you from the scheme, not just that they have you down as having left.

I wonder what happens if next time a gig gets cancelled each paying customer separately takes Ticketmaster to the small claims.
Firstly I bet the legalities of the imposed contract  agreed to under the timer Ticketmaster impose (signed under pressure?) start to look a little unfair and paying private customers have some level of protection there.
Secondly the nuisance value of that very reasonable action might well encourage Ticketmaster to consider that fees position going forward.
    Just wondering.

Dancing on the head of a pin.  If the gig is cancelled, then Ticketmaster did not furnish a ticket to get into a gig, because there was no gig.

if the gig starts and was rubbish I have some sympathy with you, though even then that’s like the bike shop saying they only sold an order being sent to Trek.  If the bike breaks it was because Trek employed Shane McGowan – nothing to do with the bike shop.

I think you are claiming to be like a pools agent but, you are correct, I am not a CMA (or American equivalent) lawyer – why don’t we just wait for them to have their say?

But me, I think you are sailing close to the wind on abuse of monopoly position given how many gigs you have pretty much exclusive rights to sell.  But I don’t know.

And if the cake is in some way inedible, I get all my money back, not just the wholesale cost and the cafe still charges me for going to the cafe instead of eating the supermarket cake at home.

    I know, I don’t know exactly Ticketmaster’s business model, but here’s the rub – I’m the customer, I don’t care.
if I buy something from a shop (worse that shop is an effective monopoly) and I don’t get what I ordered, I want my money back. I don’t mind the dip making a margin when they deliver, but they should take the risk for that margin.
Taking my money (and I pay the money to Ticketmaster or the bike shop, not AC/DC or Trek) and taking the risk/ hit if the gig falls through – that’s what I would find annoying.
Can I just check, is that what Ticketmaster do, or do the refund all the money I paid to see the show, including any sundry adds-ons?

PS – I note the CMA, the US federal government and a number of US states are investigating a number of aspects of Live Nation / Ticketmaster behaviour.
Maybe it will come to nothing. Maybe they will be found to be abusing a monopoly position.

Interesting.  That argument isn’t far away from the bike shop saying “nothing to do with us if Trek / Specialized / etc sell a bike that breaks”.
If it was that easy certain bike shops would separate their “selling fees” from the bike price.

To be fair I do go to some high profile gigs, and just accept that Ticketmaster are raiding my bank account, but in reality I prefer seeing bands in small venues (The Cresent York anyone?) as it’s just a better experience – and that cuts Ticketmaster out a lot of the time.

I recently paid £80 delivered from a Volvo dealer to replace ine that I had broken the buckle and lost the rubber strap sleeve on.
Same price as ordering the spare parts I needed. Kept the old one in case it’s needed for spares.

The problem is Cav probably could supply enough words and detail for a chapter on the last km of each of those stages, but whether I could bring myself to read it…

He comes across really well, likeable, grumpy when he doesn’t win perhaps, but I can accept that.
And he clearly remembers every pedal stroke for key stages.
But I don’t think I want to read it.  I suspect he has a more interesting story to tell on other matters.

It’s cheating but a hairdryer blowing air into the flue before lighting has had good effects, as (not cheating) has just leaving the stove open for 30 minutes before lighting to let any cold air fall out – that’s for the cold overnight but a bit warmer now days.

Specialised Grail used to do this – padding in the palm hollow, not the contact areas.
I still love them but that style is discontinued.

    So basically, watching with interest.

I really like Grand Seiko watches except for the logo.
GS or Grand Seiko makes no odds.

If it wasn’t in that daft typeface I’d be happy.

Short answer – you are probably imagining it.

Slightly longer version – well, digital signals are not perfect, there are 1s that come through as 0s and vice versa. That’s why we have error checking, which of course tries to remove the erroneous bits and restore them (not quite true but close enough). And if the number of erroneous bits is low the check bits work well – but a high number causes problems. Think dalek voice on mobiles for an extreme example.
But over 500mm on a controlled path? Probably imagination.

    @nickc

Interesting article regarding the cut in Winter Fuel Allowance.

Appears to be a Treasury initiative offered to each new Chancellor as a way to save money, Reeves being the first to agree to it

Pensioners, in general though not of course exclusively, vote Tory.
Folk with young children are more likely to vote Labour.
The last Labour government tried to address childhood poverty.
The Tory governments since tended to look after pensioners in preference to children and younger generations.

I think I got that right, and if so it’s not rocket science as to what is happening.

Pretending it was going to stop after brexit was always a remainer fantasy.

And pretending that remainers thought that was a Brexy fantasy.
It was never going to stop. People were always going to be happy to take our money for their goods.

It was just going to get slower and more expensive to trade. And it has, it is still and it will be more so – unless we do something about it.

I’d like my freedoms back please. Rejoining is optional at the moment (though difficult I’d agree).

It’s rare I agree with @chewkw but any meeting longer than 30 minutes needs a bit of looking at. It’s probably not really a meeting, it’s a couple of people who need to work on something together who have accidentally involved lots of people who don’t need to be there – or it’s just complete bobbins.
    There are occasional exceptions.

I’m going to argue against contacts.

I’ve used them in the past and they’re great for emergencies, but…

I need glasses for riding or driving, but I can’t read with them on, so contacts mean I have to take reading glasses.

Not a huge problem really, but for a ride that might pop into the pub, or bike shop, or need a bit of impromptu trail side maintenance, I prefer glasses.

I splashed out on Oakley Flux 2.0 photochromic prescription ones – not cheap, really not cheap, but that was pre-pandemic and it’s only now that I’m thinking they’re getting a bit scratched.

YMMV regarding scratches and longevity but on an annualised basis, not that bad cost wise, and blinking excellent for riding, driving, gigs, cinema, and snowsports – all the things where you mix close and distance work.

I do use contacts with googles, and have a few pairs in the car in case I lose my glasses, but I much prefer the glasses.

If you want an environmental tax, I would tax both employee and employer an extra 1% (of employee income) each if the place of work is more than 10km from home.

Do I get a discount when I cycle in (which I do on a regular basis)?

Or when I work from home (likewise)?

Actually I can see an interesting tax dodge in your proposal @MSP – it might save me a bit getting to list me as being at another depot / site and I can claim for attending sites further away.

    @flicker

Yup, but changing that is going to punish the poor.

Given the way social housing providers are installing / planning to install heat pumps, possibly quite the reverse.

kWh per kWh gas is a lot cheaper than electricity

True but remember that a good proportion of that difference is tax. Seems wrong that there is more tax (both in absolute and percentage terms) on the fuel with lower carbon emissions.

And a few of the energy suppliers are now advocating a change there.
