In response to Ro5ey, you don’t sound rude and it is a perfectly reasonable question, I do it because I can see the enjoyment the boys get out of it. The younger son actually wants to play football as a ‘career'( chances slim to F.. all), but while he loves doing it I will help best I can by taking him to the sessions and games. If in the near future he no longer wants to do it that’s fine by me, I’m not looking at getting a return turn on my ‘investment’, a smile is good enough for me. I do agree though that what we do may sound crazy to others and it is hard work but if I can I will help my kids to do what they want, and I enjoy doing so :-)
I have two boys aged 13 and 8 both play football, the youngest is at a professional academy and the other at county level. I’m currently doing around 300-400 miles a week and rarely see my wife and daughter between Mon and Thursday 👀🤦♂️, they both love it and it’s opportunities that weren’t around when I was younger so we found it hard to say no, they both know if it doesn’t work for the family it will stop. It’s going ok so far but very tiring. The commitment is massive for kids and parents, they also know if they don’t enjoy it they can stop whenever they want. It also means I’m down to one ride a week 🤪. There is no pushing them though It’s all their choice if they want to do well. I’d say go for it but be relaxed if it does or doesn’t work. Some of the other parents I come across are very tense and pressure to make Timmy be next big thing (chance 1% to zero)
West wales is stunning, around the Aberporth, New quay area. Like cornwall but quieter, beautiful beaches and also cheaper :-). Also stayed in Dumfries and Galloway a few years ago which was nice
We stay La Rochelle way every year and love it lots of different place to go we took ours to the places below last year
First link is a drop in slide place, really good fun for a morning. Second is the valley of the monkeys also good day out and bottom one is high ropes Go ape type thing last around 3-4 hours hard work and so much fun
As someone who lives in Weston I’d say Monmouth 😁, Weston is a lot better than it used to be now the seafront has been spruced up but still needs work elsewhere. You could stay premier Inn at lympsham near Weston and just visit uphill end of beach for countryside via a chippy etc if wife is adamant
I am just south of Bristol outside of WSM and have just used a company called Better Kitchens, they have small showroom, can order all online and came built very solid units and they will do a design for you. Very reasonable price compared to the high street names
I don’t have a 29er FS so not too much to add other than I think your mendip based and I know that independent bike co in Weston can supply the orange stages and also has Nicolai bikes in stock. I quite like the look of the Starling murmur it got a good write up and is Bristol based which could be good for demos etc
I ride mendips roughly twice a week and with current tremendous conditions I wouldn’t bother with that route bit too much road if you’re popping up for a one off, I’ll see if I can work how to create a gpx file from one of our rides of around 15 miles based around beacon and the woods, you can then explore all the runs in woods as well or do another loop.
Cc
I ride the mendips all year so you get used to muddy rides pretty quickly, used to love them and believe they make you a better rider… that was until I fell off last two rides out and now have a sore wrist which will keep me off the bike for a while
We rode it a couple of weeks ago, twrch was diverted from just after wooded area past the skills loops at the top, it then diverts you down, we rode round the hill to the top of the downhill runs and rode those down, a few hairy sections but possible to roll most and is much for fun than the diversion
Id hope for no lasting damage, Ive had long term coccyx issues for about 3 years now, it took 3 steroid injections ( which are a delight 8O ) to get mine back to sort of manageable on a day to day basis. No tips other than rest it and don’t hit it again
My wife had a grand mal seizure around 11 years ago now, even managed to dislocate her shoulder during, she’s well medicated now and has never fitted since, my wife’s main worry is if ever happens again she will lose her driving licence again and she feels like her independence is taken.my wife neurologist was amazing so see what they have to say and take it from there
There are plenty of other cracking descents to do if you want to stay away from the DH runs, Only ridden Quantocks around 5-6 times but I love it. possibly my favourite place to ride, but I do have to suffer the Mendip mud on a weekly basis so not too hard to beat that
We have been to Dumfries and Galloway and Id say west wales is the closest you would get to something similar. We stay just outside Aberaeron. Not too sure I can link this but we stayed here and it is always quiet and not too expensive for peak times.
Not BPW or Afan but I used Proride at FOD with Joe and he was outstanding, when people say that coaching is one of the best upgrades you can get they were not lying. My riding has come on massively since. More than likely be too short notice though.
I have had a KS supernatural for over year now and the only thing I have had done is replacing the cable, I ride 2-3 times a week in mendip mud all year round and its been ace.
Not a frequent poster on here but this subject strikes a chord with me. I personally wouldn’t recommend telling anybody until at least after the 12 week scan purely to save yourselves from all the awkward questions and conversations that will be asked if anything bad happens. My wife has had 3 miscarriages including numerous other procedures after the miscarriages as well. We now have 3 children (2 naturally conceived) but there have been some very long and dark periods along the way. I do also agree there is not a lot of support or thought for the dad along the way. I hope all goes to plan for Weird bloke and his partner.
I am 39 and have only been into MTB 3 years after playing football for 20 years, I fell out of love with that (dodgy knees)so now hooked on MTB. I ride with a 67yr old every week who is faster up and down than 90% of our group. Watched him go off a black jump at BPW on his 120mm Anthem at xmas which was brilliantand also did rangers on Snowdon a few weeks ago so hopefully if I can still ride at his age then that would be great. We only get one go round on this crazy planet and you have to make the most of it. :D
I fractured mine around 10 years only minor but had quite bad ligament damage. All good now but it did take 3 rounds of physio, the last session was around 14 weeks worth and was what sorted it for me. Whatever the physio gives you to do or tells you to do make sure you do it and more
I was in the same position so just had the throat spray, and managed it ok. It definitely wasn’t the most pleasant experience, but if you relax and breath like they say then its definitely doable.
Yes, was out last night and it has dried lovely. If you know the area, Xmas trees has some felled trees at start but after that all good, pheasants is wet up top but bird box is dry and mendip magic is running lovely
We went to france last year and whenever my youngest to were in the pool area I made them wear there buoyancy jackets. They were never left unsupervised though. Which I suppose will be the main safety device.
As said above tell her to stop using soaps for a little while and use some emollient. My son and daughter both have it, daughter is a lot worse. We use dermol 500 as a soap substitute which is very good with epiderm moisturiser and a 1% hydrocortisone to control the bad bits. Also have a potent steroid (elecon) for very bad flare ups. We also do not use aqueous cream anymore.
Just had nerf banned by wife after middle son run into closed front door trying to dodge a bullet mid war, cue popped eyebrow and lots of blood,(also tears of laughter)
Had to be glued and steri stitched in A and E
