^and higher torque via braking forces (larger diameter= more leverage) hub tries to stay still while rim is trying to turn?

^good point, know this from riding motorbikes but never considered that the new style of “enduro/AM” lids could get in the way!

picked up the bass as there were allways too many guitarists in the jam session haha
bought a copy fender for really low price s/h and really enjoyed myself, once my fingers stopped bleeding that is.
was really great to get back to basic grooves playing funk and it is really satisfying being the “foundation” to the whole sound found it much less demanding than the guitar and was able to relax much more and enjoy listening to everyone much more closely while playing.
always got to do a couple of numbers on the guitar as well..best of everything.

    do it!!

A balanced system sound good and does not need tone adjustments,
there are exceptions but “bad” recordings are generally made worse by any tweaking, recordings that need lots of tweaking on some setups i have found to sound much better with no tweaking on balanced setups. that is to say- IMO unbalanced equipment make bad recordings sound worse. you can’t really improve them with EQ.

Nearly all digital EQ hurts my ears but i quite like the harmonic distortion and subtle phase shifts introduced by some analog EQ designs. But i speak from the perspective of a recording engineer, i never felt the need to EQ stuff for playback on well matched HIFI setups.

oh yeah and different types of capacitors, switches, pots and all the circuitry in the signal path do make a difference….you just may not notice it.

in any job you are responsible for not making a mess, if you do you then have to try and sort it out, often on/at your own time/expense.

    loved that USB cable review!

air as the transmition medium probably has more of an influence on the sound you perceive than any cable,

hmmm.. the quantity of cable and connectors (wordclock cables from Altai and regular phono leads used instead of a coax lead) and generic (but quite nice) VCAs etc that your average signal goes through (even in top dollar studios) etc etc, before going anywhere near a 2 track master … sure lets talk about 1m of cable changing the subtle timbre of a recording!

kit does sound different, no dispute, but really…so much hype, back to the music please.

audio engineers become familiar with not only the charecteristics of individual monitors but also rooms and how the sound they hear will translate to other enviroments/playback equipment and be altered by broadcast processing etc. nothing to do with HiFi

its why they use NS10s, they crap !

spend time and a little thought on room layout to get the most out of your kit
as unless you are “nearfield monitoring” the room is responsible for a very large part of the sound.

I cut down a grip to 90mm and with the X9 grip width is 135mm, enough room for my largish hands to grip without the bump of the X9 being obtrusive,

+1 for active speakers, just plug them into your source.

if you got an old half decent PC you can make it a media player and have all your music movies and streaming stuff in one place, no need for fancy kit!

http://www.mythbuntu.org – or similar like VLC player for Mac/PC etc.

I still think the old LPs kill any digital format, even 24 bit 192k…I have installled hi spec pro kit in loads of recording facilites and still prefer to listen to a scratchy LPs for pure “vibe”

agree with sharkbait, you loose too much heat and they can bother some people with breathing difficulties, if you go for an inset, check out the type with a buit in fan.

one small issue with fires is the use up the air in the room creating a negative pressure inside the room, this can make for uncomfortable draughts, if its possible to give the fire its own air supply piped from outside- much like a modern combi gas boiler does – worth it!

    Building Custom Cassettes

Shimano wants you to use one of its standard combinations, and offers a wide-enough choice to suit the needs of most cyclists, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to!

Shimano cassettes that don’t use spiders have most of the sprockets held together by 3 small bolts or rivets. These are not essential. Their function is convenience, in allowing the cassette to be installed slightly more easily. To make a custom cassette, you will often need to remove the screws or rivets. Just discard them: they are unnecessary in practice.

Some cassettes use screws with a 4 mm hex head. These can be removed with an adjustable wrench.
Some cassettes use screws with a 2 mm Allen head. These are frequently mistaken for rivets.
The easiest way to remove rivets is to grind off the heads where they protrude from the largest sprocket. I generally do this on a bench grinder.

It is not difficult to customize Shimano cassettes. If you substitute an un-approved cog, Uniglide or Hyperglide, it will still work, but the shift to/from that cog will probably not be as smooth as a Hyperglide shift normally is. Since people managed without Hyperglide for several decades, this shouldn’t scare you off. In particular, if you substitute the top or bottom sprocket, you will only have one shift that isn’t HG; shifts to or from the extreme sprockets tend to be less troublesome than intermediate shifts anyway.

For example, Shimano doesn’t make any true “corncob” (one-tooth-jump) cassettes for time-trialists or flatland riders. In 7 speed, the closest is the J (13/14/15/16/17/19/21).

If you remove the 21-tooth sprocket from a J, you can make it into a 13-19 corncob by buying an 18 to put between the 17 and the 19. Alternately, you could make it into a 12-18 by removing the 19 and the 21, and buying a 12 and an 18.

Similar modifications can be done with other ratios. Generally, the smallest sprocket needs to be one with a built-in spacer, designed for the top-gear position. While you can’t insert or remove a sprocket within a spider module, you can add sprockets on either side of these modules.

For example, if you want a 13-32 9-speed, you can start with a 12-27:

    Replace the 12 and 13 with a top-position 13.
    Add a spacer and a 32 after the 27
(you don’t need to buy the spacer, because you can use the spacer that came between the original flat 13 and the 14.)

There is no problem mixing 7-speed or 8-speed flat sprockets into a 9-speed cassette, or vice versa. The smaller sizes (11, 12, 13) that feature built-in spacers should ideally be matched, but even this isn’t generally a problem in practice. If you want to get finicky, you can compensate by using a wider spacer next to a narrower sprocket, or vice versa. On the other hand, if you use 9- or 10- speed sprockets with built-in spacers in a 7-or 8-speed cassette, the spacing will be too narrow for the wider chains used with these sprockets. You should use only 10-speed sprockets in a 10-speed cassette, because the internal width of the chain is narrower.

I just used a hand file, no need for a grining wheel, make sure you
keep it flat and clean up the sharp edges when done, tip: put the file
flat on the edge of the bench/table and rub the socket over it to help keep it all square,

I would strip down the fork and do a full inspection cleanup if you are going as far as changing the seals…
