We went out with The White Room a few years ago, and multiple promises were made that my other half (a very nervous relative newcomer) would be catered to and properly looked after. Sadly, this didn’t actually happen until the very last day, and it took her getting very upset and kicking up a fuss before it got sorted. I’m sure other people have had better experiences, but it put her off MTBing for a good while, and took ages to get her confidence back.

Go to eBay, search “bottom bracket cups”, buy appropriate item 👍

Audi A6 Allroads with the air suspension do this – not the A4 Allroads as they have standard coil springs IIRC.

It’s Partick, not Finnieston, but Suissi is absolutely incredible. Do not let the fact that it’s vegan prejudice you one iota.

Thank-you all for your replies – my OH and I have spent most of today looking through pics of Digby and sobbing our hearts out. The house feels so empty without him as he had such a huge personality, but we’re trying to be strong as Elvis is missing his big brother. We tried to make sure he got to see Digby after he had passed away so that he could smell him, and try to wake him, to understand that he’s gone – but when my OH went out to get some food earlier, when she came back he still got all excited as he thought she was bringing Digby home. Broke our hearts. He’ll get a new, younger brother to look after soon enough though.

Here they are in happier times, Digby (departed, left) and Elvis (right).

How do people feel about the dubs vs. subtitles on animated stuff like Studio Ghibli films? I’ve watched both, and generally prefer the dubs as they’re pretty well done.

I wouldn’t have thought it’d be great for bike packing as it’s go no mounts other than 2x bottle cage mounts. Isn’t there the new titanium Rocky Road which is intended more for that sort of thing?

Took a crack at the first episode tonight and don’t think I’ll bother with any more. It’s not the disconnect between it and the books, as I was expecting that – it’s just not very good!

@wilko77 – yeah, they’re inverted tread with a central ridge so they roll like a slick on the road. They’re not folding, or anything fancy, but they’re cheap and tough, and suitable for almost any terrain bar proper mud.

If you need/want ability for stuff like towpaths as well, Schwalbe Land Cruisers are pretty damn indestructible.

You’re not really a customer more a ‘mark’ with PX these days

Absolutely wasn’t my experience at all. I asked for specific gear cable/brake hose routing on one of the Whippets and they were more than happy to oblige. Also popped an additional headset crown race in with the bike FOC as I’d planned to be able to swap forks, which they didn’t need to do as I was happy to buy it.

Ref. open mould frames – no idea who OO/PX use for the gravel bikes, or if they’re even open mould at all, but this is the Whippet: http://www.flybike-asia.com/product/175.html

Again, not gravel bikes (nearly though) – bought a brace of Whippets and they’re great. Open mould frames, but everything was assembled fine and we’ve had no issues as yet.

Could possibly compromise on the fingerprint scanner but would prefer not to.

    Anything else?

I think your best bet is to look for a disc-equipped Carrera Subway. No suspension fork so no servicing worries, 8-speed so cheap consumables, cable disc brakes so easily serviced. Should be around £150 in decent condition.

Or something like this if you’re after a mountain bike: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/181372313946006/

How tall is your lad, and can you get to Cov? This sort of thing would be ideal: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/319742599704361/

Replace the quick releases with security skewers though..

In all honesty, for that kind of use I’d be getting a sub-£100 bike from FB Marketplace. Something like this: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/160348729455231/

Don’t think it’s been mentioned, but I have a pair of the LG FN4 in-ear buds – they have a mode where they allow you to mix in the ambient noise (picked up by the microphone) with the music, so you can always hear what’s going on around you.

Two and a half weeks on from first AZ and I’m still massively fatigued with muscle ache. Did a 50k offroad ride 2 days before my jab. Would struggle to do 5k now. Really hoping this fades sooner rather than later as its wearing thin now.

I’m going to turn the question around slightly; OP – what do you actually want as your ideal outcome, and how reasonable do you think that is?

    – Noisy work to only be carried out within permitted hours? Perfectly reasonable, if they’re not abiding by that already.

    – Reduction in noise levels of construction work? Not going to happen, the methods being used will already have been approved by the council.

    – Being moved to alternate accommodation for the entire duration of the works? Not going to happen, in fact I’d say you were lucky to be moved during the piling. If you were a homeowner rather than housing association tenant you wouldn’t have had the choice other than to relocate temporarily at your own expense.

    – Construction to be cancelled entirely? Yeah, no.

Do I have any rights to peace and quiet

Like the existing residents when your house was being built..? 🤔 Your OP reads very NIMBYish I’m afraid.

Our little cul-de-sac is being extended atm, and my OH has been WFH the whole time – the actual house construction really isn’t too bad, and we’ve only had one instance where we had a trench across the drive and needed to get a car off; I politely asked for an additional trench plate and it was duly supplied (along with a thanks from the project management company for not breaking Rule 1 over it).

Houses need to be built, and they’re mostly going to be built near existing residential areas. If they’re abiding by the noise regulation rules, suck it up.

I was really wary of having internal routing on my Whippet but actually it wasn’t as much hassle as I thought. Routing the dropper cable around the BB was a bit fiddly but it could have been worse. Bent spoke and an old gear inner with a hook bent in one end helped.

Most fully comprehensive policies have DOC (driving other cars) cover on them – usually only 3rd Party cover, and the other vehicle has to have its own insurance policy in place. We’re with Aviva and it’s included on our policy.

I think it’s only supposed to be an occasional thing though, so if it’s regular then getting added as named drivers on your parents’ policies might well be the better option.

Ref. your comments about the SX on the Whippet – PX now showing it with GX if that helps?

£1300 leaves enough for a decent fork if you wanted one, though I really like the Selcof carbon.

Anecdotal evidence from my sister (used to ride her bike everywhere as didn’t drive, yet never considered herself a “cyclist”) was that she experienced far fewer close passes when she didn’t wear a helmet. As soon as she started wearing one, drivers passed a lot closer and faster.

If I was in that position, I’d spend the money on the Pitch tbh. The geometry was ahead of its time in terms of reach, etc, and for £500 used I doubt there’s much better out there.

Nope, I’m very thankful for this weather actually..! <hides>

Vaccine fatigue means I’m off the bike anyway, but we have horses and we need the grass to grow, and for the farmers to be able to get two cuts of hay this year as the weather last year meant that they only got one cut, which meant by the end of this winter everywhere was running out of hay and jacking their prices up. Two more weeks of rain, then a glorious summer please! 😂

I’m 9 days in from first AZ and still feeling really fatigued. Had some worrying chest pains on Monday so called 111 to get advice – they ended up sending paramedics and I spent most of the day in hospital having tests. Thankfully the important D Dimer test for clots came back clear, so that’s something at least..! Just can’t wait for the tiredness and lethargy to pass.

Self (44/m) and other half (41/f) both had first AZ jabs yesterday at 4pm. No real side effects for the rest of the day for me – she had a slightly sore arm. Both started to feel a bit achy at about 11pm so took paracetamol and went to bed. I slept better than normal and woke up feeling like I’d done a massive ride the day before. She slept really badly and is running a temperature alongside feeling fatigued, much more so than I am. Hopefully tea, toast and paracetamol again will help!

The OH’s On One Whippet is like this – dropper cable routes internally down the seat tube, over the top of the BB and up the down tube before exiting just by the head tube.
