    Really enjoying these diaries, Hannah!

Some really cool insights and things we don’t often get to see!

Anyone care to summarise that copied and pasted word document?

Enjoyed it then? In summary, bicycle insurance isn’t for everyone. Especially Velosurance if you’re not in the US, but they did offer some great insights into things people might not know about specialist insurance for your pride and joy.

@identitizombie – I didn’t mean to come across as critical (if it did), it’s an enjoyable article but as it refers to people with jobs doing different things I was surprised his name didn’t crop up.

Oh no, not at all! glad you enjoyed it. You are right, though. Would have been interesting to delve into something about him, I just didn’t think at the time. I have a feeling that would be a whole feature in itself…

There was this one company, once upon a crowdfund…

Yeah, maybe my business idea isn’t such a good idea after all… *rides off on my totally sick invisible ride*

Building bikes for imaginary riders would certainly be a controversial business plan.

Or imaginary bikes for real riders *pretends I’ve never run down a trail holding my imaginary handlebars…*

@straightliner He’s an incredible person who has done/does the most amazing things on a bike. We just didn’t touch on him in this. It was more about the brand and how things have changed etc. Apologies!

Might have to add this to my Linkedin profile somewhere, ‘Had 3/10 top STW.com stories from 2021’ ha. Or you know, make myself a badge or something.

Keep up the amazing work, guys! Look forward to seeing what 2022 has in store for STW.

Apologies for the late reply! I just caught up on this post, now. Thank you all for having me, it was a pleasure!

I am actually leaving the bike world at going to work for a marketing agency close to home. I’m sure I will dip in and out, however so this likely won’t be the last you hear from me :)

Mark’s piece is far more like it. Could he do some more e-hike-a-bike for us? 🙂

    I’m sure he’d love to.. :P

Thanks, guys, we hear you. We’re going to work on something. Appreciate the feedback. I was the one to pop this up, it was scheduled to go live before the video was released. In future, I will do better!

Mark has shared this piece with me as an alternative and an actual proper epic in the lakes: https://singletrackworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/singletrack-issue-126-how-to-lose-friends-and-alienate-people-e-mtb-ebike/

They aren’t happy with us. I have just spoken to the bike shop and they are aware the Trustpilot links to them and they have reported it.

    identitizombie

Looks like they might have changed the url on their Trustpilot page to a genuine website?

Noticed that too. To a company of a similar name that looks like it hasn’t been active much. I will check on this but have updated the article with some more info.

Our stories are now automatically turned into forum posts :) As I’m sure many of you have noticed.

Hopefully this news story will be a Google result when people search for The Bicycle Company UK and put people off shopping with them

    I hope so too @DezB

Thanks, @chuckmack I was searching online but that’s one thing I wasn’t able to find out.

Hannah brought this to my attention. I’m doing some digging. If anything we will get something up to warn others. If anyone who has made a purchase or spoken to them wants to drop me a message please feel free to do so!

Was really gutted when I heard this. Saw Slipknot a few years back and they were amazing live. One of the most talented metal drummers out there, it’s so rubbish :(

Thanks for the feedback! Will have a chat with the team. It’s definitely hard to hit everything but I try to ensure there’s a good mix. At the moment, with racing and events being on, it’s good to be able to cover the big stuff. This time of year now that racing is actually happening there will likely be more of a race focus, but I will be mindful to make sure to mix it up where I can.

I was brought on board to make sure there was more content going up on the front page so the rest of the editorial team could have more time to focus on writing. Always interested to hear feedback and more of what people want, though! So thank you. Likewise, if you ever spot anything my inbox is always open.

There’s plenty of great accommodation in the area. The midgies were bloody rife last night went to do a loop of the Blade and they were in hoards.

There’s the Afan lodge, Bryn Bettws Lodge (they have camping, pods and cabins), Willow Springs, camping at Afan forest park and Glyncorrwg ponds.

@DezB – in hindsight, the tile should have been, upside down bikes, should it be a thing? Ha. Anyway, have enjoyed reading the comments and discussions (here and on social media). Will look out for this in future, though hopefully I won’t see it often!

    identitizombie

Not as far as I’ve understood what he’s said. The article portrays the “upside down bike” as some kind of internationally recognised system when it appears that plenty of people with a lot of experience have never come across.

Apologies if this is the way it comes across. Never expected this to get the reach it has. The intent is to raise awareness (as I said in a previous comment, I’ve not seen it either, though it does appear a lot more common in Europe and not the UK). Hopefully we’ve helped to make it more of ‘a thing’ so that people will recognise it as something to slow down for.

To clarify, the idea is that this isn’t a thing as such, but the riders involved would like it to be something that’s more widely recognised in the interest of keeping everyone safe on the trails. However you choose to do it, we all have a responsibility to make sure we’re doing the best we can when the worst should happen.

The hope is, that when seeing this and used in the safest way possible that it could prevent further accidents. As most have said, they would see it and slow down. The issue in this circumstance is the rider couldn’t be moved and his friends wanted to stay with him and keep him safe.

Oops, din’t mean no ‘arm, honest 😀

Not at all, just defending my honour. Ha. As I said, I definitely do still ride like one at the best of times.

Again, just wanted to open the discussion. Didn’t mean for things to come across like this is the rule and everyone should know. As I admitted, I’ve never seen it myself. Hopefully we don’t see it often, but perhaps it can be adopted where sensible if there’s a need to block the trail.

Well said Northwind. The writer of the article and the thread OP are the same (fairly newby rider, IIRC) funnily enough. Not dissing their newbiness by any means. But it makes you think eh?

Although I sometimes ride like one, I’ve been riding for the past nine years (well, I did take a year off). I have also been working in the bike industry since 2013. The point of this article (was not to say this is the rule) it was to say I’ve never seen it, even when I’ve been riding in different parts of the world.

It’s purely just for discussion, and to raise awareness following the accident and the fact people were still riding around. Sorry if the tone was off, @northwind

I am EXCITED! Feels like a real season this year even with the changes and cancellation of Fort Bill. I will endeavour to post all the good stuff over the weekend.

Really looking forward to having Tracey’s perspective when commentating on the women’s racing.

Owen Wilson has aged somewhat hasn’t he. Wow.

I’m not sure if this is in part just because of his character. He mentions time works differently in the TVA and they were essentially created by the Time Keepers to do the job. Could be reading too much into it, or he could just be getting older. But hey, aren’t we all.. ha.

I enjoyed the first one. Don’t want to say too much obviously as spoilers and whatnot. Have really been enjoying the series’ so far. WandaVision was great.

Also giggled at the Wow in above.. I said it in Owen’s voice.

In the “Readers’ Rides” stories… can we see the riders? After finding that my image of Binners was so far from the truth, it would be great to put more faces to names.

I’ve passed this onto Hannah, if people want to include them for sure!

You do realise that whilst many of us ride mountain bikes we are far more interested in other stuff, especially if there’s a bike link. Your journo colleague Mike Davies got more interest in his bike-friendly camper van build than any straight MTB article he ever wrote. Assuming this is you:

    http://www.lauren-jenkins.co.uk/

    Bike-friendly flat renovation
    Bike-friendly cafes
    Heritage MTB rides

Something that means I spend more than 40 seconds on the home page before clicking on ‘forum’ to find something interesting.

That is indeed me. I like the idea of bike related and more lifestyle news. I definitely spend more time thinking about things related to riding than riding itself.

I suppose it’s worth a mention that I’m not based near the team, I’m WFH with the dog in South Wales. So we it seems, are spreading.

Have really enjoyed reading suggestions. Even those I have no context for (rest assured Hannah is on the case there).

More axles, more cheese, more nature, more UK racing. Editorial have noted all requests!

Thanks for the warm welcome, all! I will be lurking around the forum, but if there’s anything you think needs to go up, please drop me a message.

Look forward to getting to know everyone a bit better (am I going to regret that?).

Actually, this would be interesting… Who’s buying all our, I mean, the stuff? and why are the shops not replenishing stocks? I’m confused.

Many different reasons, manufacturing delays and backlogs due to the pandemic, import costs and changes, low stock availability. Coming from a cycling retailer prior to this, everyone is in the same position and everyone is working as hard as possible to get stock as and when it becomes available. It’s been a strange time, for a lot of industries.

I will see if there’s anything we can do on this, would be interesting to talk to ‘the industry’ about it.

    Hello.
Lots of stuff about trail dogs please (I’ve nosed at the insta stuff). It upsets all the right people 😀

I would be a fan of this also. Training and education (for both people and dogs) I know they aren’t everyone’s favourite but more on the topic can’t be a bad thing (from a variety of perspectives).

Hi Lauren and welcome. Are you planning to use the forum? It would be good to see more of a connect with the news on the main site and chat on here. We sometimes talk about some news story with a link to pinkbike or bikeradar and the like even though there is a story here on the home page. Might mean we actually talk about bikes a bit more.

I hope my reply to this works, it’s been a while since I’ve actually written a post on the forum. Yes, I will be around and seeing what everyone is chatting about. Chances are if you’re talking about it (and it’s relevant/bike-related) then it will be good for news.
