It doesn’t surprise me, my enduro evo was 20% cheaper in France and they took a trade in.

Save your cash and buy it in Germany.

I would have thought that a first class ticket on fast trains would be the way to go. More space, less stress, back quicker and would work out way cheaper.

The motorhome will only have a small toilet so it is unlikely that your dad will be able to use it anyhow.

If it was me, I would just go see a good private physio (immediately and often if required) and take the cost on the chin. NHS physios are just as good but it usually takes time for referral, there is not likely to be many sessions and seeing them can be a hassle as they are usually at a hospital somewhere.

You could try using the limiter screws to bring the rear cassette down to 7 usable gears. I did this with a 9 speed cassette and an 8 speed shifter with no problems.

ianv – how did you go about the climbing wall? I quite fancy building one in my basement.

Mine is sort of wedged between a kicker and the beam, I have seen/used all sorts of methods though. How big is the space? How solid are the walls? Happy to advise if you need suggestions.

Do you work at Awesome Walls in Stockport?

Not sure about this, French tv is truly awful.

Recently built this up for my son. Its still a bit big for properly chucking about but his 20″ was on its way out and he has a BMX for that sort of stuff anyway.

Going with short cranks will restrict the number of gears as the most readily available ones are BMX race cranks, you will also struggle to get a front chain ring less than 34. That said, 34 up front and 9 speed out back seems to be enough for my son.

Forget the “go rigid” stuff, the more fun the kid has the more he/she will ride and the more they will learn. Pinballing down a rocky trail with no suspension will not be fun and is likely to put them off.

The only thing I would do is change the fork to something air and decent (and remove the spacer stack at the same time).

If he struggles on hills don’t force him, get off and walk. Taking the fun out of riding will just put him off.

In splits between unmatched couples, each takes away what they put in. So if you can prove you provided x% to the purchase of the property you are entitled to that % after the split. The name on the mortgage isnt really that relevant as long as there is some proof of contribution. It might cost a bit in legal fees if there is no amicable agreement though. Been there so this is my experience from a similar situation.

Go somewhere like Deux alpes, you don’t need a guide. The campsite at Venosc is a good place to meet other riders if you wanted to ride with others. Plenty of riding for a week if combined with Alpe d’huez. Save yourself a load of money.

Officially I think GRs are pedestrian only but no one gives a monkeys in France. If it works, go for it.

There is a section of the camino st jacque de campostelle that goes from perpignan to at least narbonne, there is some good riding behind narbonne towards salagou/montpellier. The riding between Toulon and nice through the Maures, petit Maures and Esterel is excellent. Look on http://www.geoportail.fr to plan your route (you can choose the IGN format and get a proper map).

You will never have anyone giving you a hard time for riding a track in france so anything that is a track or a footpath is fair game.

I have the enduro evo, the suspension feels like old marzocchi ie pretty good. The springs must be pretty soft though as they are pretty much perfect for me and I am light.

For me, the vengeance fork feels better than any rock shox fork I have ridden.

It’s one thing riding along the tarn valley but I would definitely have gears if you are intending to ride from there to the coast (even on roads). Driving from Montpellier to millau on the autoroute, I have had times when I was in third gear in a 2 litre car! Once you reach the highest point, there is a big drop down to the viaduct.

Same issue here, I am currently thinking that the towbar would be the best/most secure option. The fiamma rack looks pretty easy to remove if someone wanted to nick the bikes (could be wrong though).

What about something like this? http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1067136/
You could swap to better forks and it would be a pretty good bike.

I would say a 26 inch would be too big for a 9 yr old. My son is 8 and his 24 inch isnt perfect for him yet.

I spend a lot of time in France and I have found that a kartel card from the post office is the best option. You use it in their public phone boxes. I use the uk mobile if I am stuck and use the many free wifi points for internet. In the alps, most tourist offices offer free wifi, as do decathlon, flunch, mcdonalds and the motorway services.
