Our long Sunday runs may have been reasonably slow (around 5 minute mile pace)

Just to add to the confusion, last year I was wiring a motor and inverter up (not something I’m familiar with), but looking through the specs of inverter it had a leakage current to earth of around 20ma. Odds are that it would trip an RCD.
If this saw was originally 3 phase, and has been converted to run off a single phase via an inverter, there’s a reasonable chance that it is ‘earth leaky’ by design and no amount of faffing with RCDs will make any difference.

You did good OP, ignore the sanctimonious pricks on here who just want to pick you up on something.

Indeed, had you been further out the bloke may well of ploughed straight into you. It’s new years day, the guy is probably still pissed from last night. There’s no reason to believe if you were further out in the lane he would have been any better at judging the overtake.

Scwhalbe marathons for me. They’re the only tyre to survive a zombie apocalypse.
If you don’t ride along crap covered country lanes then you might want something slightly less robust.

Nah, early night for me too. I’m pretty certain I’ve got Ebola, so I’m trying to do damage limitation on my immune system.

Now I’m curious as to what the terrain is like on your commute:)
I don’t have a power meter (though picking up a 4iiii one on friday), but strava and various bike power calculation websites would typically give me a figure of around ~200 watts for 20mph, I guess it would be higher on the hoods, but I don’t think 60 watts higher.
Maybe the power meter is out of calibration?

my outdoor FTP is 295W – i have TrainerRoad set at 300W, so why am i dying on my arse trying to put out 260w

Bit of a long-shot but was your outdoor ftp set with a power meter or from Strava’s power guestimate?

I only ask because 261watts to achieve 33kmh on your commute doesn’t sound right, unless your commute is through a muddy field.

If you’ve selected your bike type as ‘mtb’ in Strava, it will assume that you are riding though a muddy field and will give vastly inflated power readings if you’re riding on road / hardpack.

Apologies if I’ve misread and you are actually using a powermeter on the commute.

I’m not too sure, I’m using the paid version, there’s a subset of data views in the free version but I don’t know if rTSS is covered.

    http://help.trainingpeaks.com/entries/22985260-Training-Stress-Scores-Explained

BTW if you do try the free version of training peaks, when you first use it, the site looks like it’s got sweet FA on it, you need to upload a bit of data and start click on all the discreet little icons to discover stuff.

One other thing, you probably also won’t get the dimensional stability for things such as bearing surfaces, so factor in some post machining if you need any precision.

Sorry no ball-park figure, but i’ve had much smaller parts 3d printed out of metal, and extrapolating to a BB shell would put it in the quite a few hundreds of pounds range.

And running too. Training peaks uses a variety of TSS guestimates based on pace, HR etc.

Turbos in front of the telly or off road for a bit, or what tyres?

I did two hours on the turbo yesterday. By midway, smashing my face into the icy tarmac seemed a better option.

Should all work fine on a MacBook. An ipad is a different kettle of fish though. Trainerroad have an iphone app, that will run on an ipad. But the ipad/iphone doesn’t have usb/ant+ support so you need to go through a bluetooth to ant+ bridge.

Wahoo make a HR monitor strap that will do this, so your ipad/phone talks to the HR strap which then talks to you ant+ speed and cadence sensors.

    Never tried it though..

Trainerroad works great with a relatively basic turbo. I use this one –
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer
    +
    ww.wiggle.co.uk/elite-elastogel-front-wheel-riser-block/
It doesn’t feel too great once you get above 300Watts, and you can’t ride out of the saddle, but that still leaves you £145 quid
    You also need
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/garmin-speed-cadence-sensor/
    £95 quid left
    An ant+ transponder
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/garmin-usb-ant-stick/

£60 quid left to buy a trainerroad subscription and some sufferfest videos

Possibly, it depends on how it’s actually been implemented.
If it’s looking for an up down acceleration then yes, if it’s looking for a change in polarity of acceleration caused by rotation then no.

Just started snowing outside, might have to get out my fat shoes for this afternoon’s run.

(I’d be surprised if it worked as well from the outside)

The new one uses accelerometers rather than a magnet and reed switch, so it doesn’t need to be near anything.

I can’t see any reason why it would work on the outside, apart from your foot smacking into it on every rotation.
Though you might find a place on the crank where this doesn’t happen.

I think MidlandTrailquestsGraham is correct in his thoughts and observations.
For the majority of riders drops are pretty pointless, they’re a historic relic rather than an objective product choice.

I think a set of flatish bars and a set of clip on aero bars are going to solve the control / aero problems better in many cases.

An as for flexibilty.. please! Most of the bikes pictured in this thread have set ups where the drops are higher than the flats on my mtb. That gives you the choice of non-aero on the drops, and even less aero on the hoods.

Quite often a new chainset set only cost a little bit more than the chain rings.

The simple answer is – it’s complicated :)
So without knowing you anyone attempting to answer the question accurately would have to write a book length response.
    Try googling –
    training peaks overtraining
    or
    Joel Friel overtraining

    as starting points.

If helps you need at least four specific Strava bikes to cover the basic segment types.

The minute you execute a prisoner, you have lost the moral high ground, and continue the vicious circle.

It does depend on your set of morals though. If you live in revenge based culture*, then you’ve lost the moral high ground if you don’t seek instant retribution.

*According to the bit I heard on the radio yesterday, such a culture is prevalent in this area of the world.

The point about the height windspeed is measured at crossed my mind earlier too.
Turns out there is a model for it.
Using it the 30mph turns to 22mph at cyclist height.

Errr I may have missed something here. Are you saying it should be dominated by people who are a bit pants?

I guess it could be done more like du/triathlon where you have 5 year age groups. At least the talent gets spread around a bit more then.
