    Paul Weller – BBC Sessions.

And it's a week night so I'm not drinking: therefore I'll not tell you that this Pinot is really quite delicious…

The Stans valves are probably long enough, on Freeborn's site for about six quid each.

I do need a fast lense, as i'm doing a shoot in coventry in the concrete jungle there. No lights, no flash, as we're doing a gritty photo/documentary piece.

I'd be tempted to shoot on a relatively high iso for a grainy look if it's a gritty piece, you might not need something so fast (just an opinion)?

The 17-40L is a lovely lens, great contrast and saturation. At 17mm, the barrel distortion is pretty immense – but then, what isn't that wide on FF?

I'd say, on the whole, that an quality prime or L zoom on a DX format camera will out-perform a cheaper zoom lens on a 5D.

Have you heard Termis with baffles Fraz? There is no way they are much louder than stock; without they are ridiculous though (which I guess is what their website's quoting),

I'm still not sure I do get your point, really.

I haven't rang the police either. I can see that being really fruitful. Instead I think I need to lobby somebody, I have emailed the council previously to try and get the 50mph limit lowered. The road goes in between two estates, and is a throwback to when there were no houses close by. They've not re-assessed it since.

Fore rib, flank salt and pepper. No lips (do cows have them) or knackers or anything else.

Possibly cooked by a dirty oik who hasn't washed his hands since yesterday, but the meat's actually okay. I like them.

We've got a D5. They are really nice cars, get plenty in them for a weekend of walking, biking or both.

Service costs are pretty high (and the intervals are short – all Volvos), and we only get 26-28 mpg driven pretty conservatively.

Don't buy manual or leather without heated seats – both have low residuals…

As I said, I fitted a Termignoni full system to my Ducati a couple of years back, but I couldn't ride it without the baffles 'cause I just thought I was too much of a nuisance riding out of my estate on a Sunday morning.

    Pot.
    Kettle.
    Black.

I thought somebody might pick up on that, but no, it's not the same. The Termis with baffles were barely louder than stock and I was considerate when I rode it even with the baffles. But we're tallking about reasonable behavior here, and a daft bean can on the end of one of the cars I'm talking about is MUCH, MUCH louder than an exhaust from a motorbike with a standard can, or a VTEC, or anything else.

    just their hobby innit

am i right in thinking if its a loud exhaust on an Aston that's ok but if it's a Corsa they should be castrated?

I'm not saying that. My next door neighbour bought himself an M3 CSL a few years ago. The stock exhaust was, as expected, pretty loud anyway, but if he'd modified it to be without baffles I'd have thought that was out of order too.

Unfortunately the views of the OP sometimes result in total injustices such as British GT and Formula 3 races being banned at Castle Combe a few years back on noise grounds.

I'm pleased you said 'sometimes' because I don't see how you can link my opening post of knobs in little cars with daft exhausts, driving late at night up and down the roads in relatively large numbers with the noise coming from a racetrack on a Sunday afternoon 12 times a year.

FWIW, I live pretty close to the airport and that doesn't bother me at all. I knew what the craic was with that, and besides, the noise from the nearby road is MUCH more bothersome.

I think it’s something some people will never understand.

I'll duck out of this one now, I think it's run it's course.

I can understand that you like the sound, or anybody else on the thread who has a **** off exhaust. As I said, I fitted a Termignoni full system to my Ducati a couple of years back, but I couldn't ride it without the baffles 'cause I just thought I was too much of a nuisance riding out of my estate on a Sunday morning.

Or any other day, time and place for that matter. Clearly a few of you think it's okay, but I just think it's pretty selfish. But hey…

I can't be arsed to read the 'disparity' box (and without getting in to a more complicated argument), but given salaries are higher on average in the south, especially in the capital; and given the city has so many seven figure salaries, are the average contributions per capita not bound to be much higher in the sunny south?

Hey PJ, I didn't mean that driving a Mini is sad. I had a 1275GT for about five months before I realised that's not what a student loan is for – I still really like the original Mini.

I meant that most people would have thought having a non-baffled, loud as **** exhaust was pretty sad. They probably weren't turning to look for any other reason than thinking WTF is that – and not in a good way.

The annoyance with loud exhausts is coming home in the summer from a hard day at work, wanting to relax with a beer in the garden but being forced inside to shut the patio door as there is a constant stream of stupidly loud exhausts going past the house for 3 hrs.

    Yup.

used to turn lots of heads due to the whining of the gears when pootling around town, 30mph meant 2nd gear to keep revs up.

I'm sure you thought it was cool, but you see all those people turning to look? Most of them think it's just a bit sad. I accept it was a proper little car, but that's not what they were thinking…

    iamtheresurrection

Honest and open answer. I don't relate, but I can understand what you're saying.

It's a shame though that the noise isn't just inside the car and only you hear it, and instead everybody else is forced to listen to it too. To a lot of people, it's just a pain in the arse to have to hear it.

But the police were forever handing out producers to my mates which stopped the exhausts from getting too noisy.

Is Apple software really 30% more expensive than it should be? You can get Snow Leopard for £25 and Final Cut Express is a bargain at £129. You can't really compare Apple with Microsoft in terms of hardware because M$ don't make much.

We probably shouldn't get into this debate (again) on STW. But you can't seperate the cost of Apple software and hardware because you need one to run the other. The same isn't true of Microsoft. There are shades of grey in this argument but generally it holds true.

Apple hardware is lovely, I really like it and I have some. But I don't think you can call Microsoft poor value in comparison to Apple.

stay up then, or is it too much effort on a Saturday night now you've reached the grand old age of mid thirties

So, you're telling me I should stay up til 2 or 3am every Friday and Saturday in order for me to comfortably sleep with the window open. Really?

And you can roll your eyes at the crash thing, but it's true. I really have no compunction about hoping they'll write off their car on the next roundabout, putting an end to their midnight razzes up and down the road. I don't want them hurt, but if it's a consequence then I'm happy to live with it. 😉

Didn't we all do things like that when we were kids

A lot did, yes. But the police were forever handing out producers to my mates which stopped the exhausts from getting too noisy. Now, as they don't seem to care the exhausts have grew bigger, noisier and more numerous.

I do love it when people shorten Microsoft to M$. Everything I've ever bought of Apple has been 30% more expensive than it really should be… Desirable though.

It is massively inconsiderate. I've got friends how live on a more major main road who have a one year old. They can't have the wondon open on a night cause the child* is scared shitless with the noise every time one of them goes past.

I once did put some Termis on a Ducati I had, but I left the silencers in and it was no louder the the stock exhaust. They took out the cat and re-mapped the engine so it was better in the mid range – althogh in truth I couldn't really tell the difference. I can half understand it here, given I did it myself, but some of the cars I'm talking about are MUCH, MUCH louder than that.

Who do I write to? Points of view? Readers Digest? The council?

    * When people start thread saying they have this 'friend' who's sleeping with his best mates wife, we all assume we know who's involved. I promise I'm not the scared one year old 😉

I have never heard one say the controller is too small

It was for me, at first at least. I had a PSOne yonk ago and XBOX ever since. It took me about two weeks (which in my world, is about two hours of actually using it) to get used to it, but now I MUCH prefer it…

    Thanks all, again.

Talking about it tonight, and reading this thread amongst others, it would appear that the risk of the jab looks far less than the risk of the virus.

And sorry MrNutt, just seen your initial post. I'll sort pictures out later… 😀

I swapped for the same reasons about a month ago. The online experience with the PS3 sucks compared to the XBOX, I'd rather pay for the quality of the service, than get a sub-standard one for free – although it sounds like that's not a priority.

I buy most games second hand, and there's a LOT less choice on the PS3. Cross platform games I've seen so far are probably a bit better on the 360, but those written just for the PS3 are fantastic (Metal Gear Solid springs to mind).

The PS3'sa lot quieter in use, the controllers are better, the Bluray is really good if you like your movies and it generally feels a bit more grown up (I am prepared to accept the irony in that statement).

To the OP do you have any concerns about the seasonal 'flu jab, because it really isn't any different, a few protiens aside.

In truth, neither of us would have considered a flu jab before but we are this time around because we feel it's negligent not to consider it given the circumstances and advice given by the healt care professionals.

The mercury thing was probably my biggest 'blind' fear, so nice to be put right on that. Thanks.

Does being pregnant affect what happens to you if you get swine flu? I don't know but that seems the crucial point.

I couldn't possibly know the answer to this TJ, I suppose that's why I'm asking. That said, the jab given to pregnant women is Pandemrix, containing Thiomersal which is 49% mercury. I'm sure I've read about mercury and neuro devolopment in foetus…

There were no clinical trials on pregnant women with the drug, just woman of a child bearing age. We're thinking risk from the vaccine is less than risk from the virus (although our midwife doesn't know whether she's having the jab either)…

Some people really do love Christmas, and it's not really harming anybody (although my wife is 7 months pregnant, I'm guessing I'll hate Christmas coming in Novemeber in about two years from now)…

I am curious though, what's wrong with your other 362 days of the year to make you want to celebrate these three specifically (and I'm being generous), six weeks before they come?

It's not the white balance in this instance, it's the exposure as some have suggested.

I'm not familiar with Nikon, but even in full auto mode you should just be able to dial in exposure compensation with one of the control dials. +1 or +2 stops if you're taking it in bright sunlight…

EDIT: From one site on the web: This means you have to hold the +/- button at the same time as turning the command dial to alter the exposure compensation

I smashed mine and ended up taking it to an Apple store. £139 was the cost, but rather than repair they just replaced it for a brand new handset. I suppose I was satisfied with that…

If the digitiser is still working under the glass then you could look at a £10 piece of glass off eBay, but it looks a right pain in the arse to replace…
