I’ve just sold an 08 FN2 in GT trim.

Good fun to drive, nothing This side of an Elise steers as quickly but the ride is pretty hard for those days when you’re just not in the mood. The cabin can have a few rattles, the standard radio/speaker combination is pretty terrible and the brakes are a bit crap too.

When you’re in the mood though it’s great fun. Way, way more fun to drive than a Golf or Focus. Gearbox is nice too. it could do with a 9,000 rev limit, I bounced off the limiter a lot – it spins up so easily.

I sold mine because I was just getting fed up with the fuel economy (expected, I know). Mixed driving like an old lady got me 27mpg, normal driving (for a hot hatch) would never break 20 and my six month average was 22.1. The worst I ever got was 11mpg from Alston to Melmerby.

My insurers asked for a Tracker. First time that’s ever been asked.

Not sure n the codec, but it might be included in the d/l of GoPros own CinePro software that is a free download on their own site. It’s probably a better editor too.

    Mantis Flying V.

Sold it for an AMP B4, but decided on something else instead (can’t remember what, a Mountain Cycle Moho I think).

Really wanted the Boulder Gazelle though, in that red. Lovely looking thing…

Shaun Palmer. Came in, won well, then disappeared went back to snowboarding, mainly.
    FTFY.

Yeah, I just meant disappeared from mountain biking. Never took to him: rode in, won NORBA DOWNHILL(?) and then left making it all look too easy.

Somebody mentioned Susan Demattei. There was an awesome bodypaint advert of her for Diamond Back in MBA that the 18 year old in me remembers fondly…

Speaking of which, anybody remember the hidden code on the contents page of each months MBA? The mag went downhill when they dropped that (as stupid as it was)…

Earthquake Jake tragically died on his bike: struck a rock I think.

Shaun Palmer. Came in, won well, then disappeared.

And Caroline’s Dynatech must have been made elsewhere I had had one in team colours that must have weighed 8lb for the frame alone.

Flew to Vegas economy for work which confirmed that more than 5 hours in economy is too much for me (I just can’t get to sleep on flights). Upgraded to Premium Economy for $300 at the airport for the return (BA), I’d say if there are two of you and you get the window seats then it’s definitely worth it…

It wasn’t the Business Class menu, but it’s a tiny part of the plane and the service is constant and much better than economy…

My wife just read this and suggests you show her the thread. She says that’ll sort the living arrangements quickly enough; although you’ll probably not be living under the same roof… 😉

I don’t why you think she should put you on the mortgage. I certainly wouldn’t if a girl was moving in with me after two years. I’d be waiting til we’d been living together for a good while first. What share of the deeds do you have on your current rental agreement?

Regardless, my advice would be move in and plan on selling and getting your own place together when the time’s right. I reckon to her, that’ll always be her place and you’ll always be slightly on the back foot. Plus, when you choose somewhere else that’s the easiest time to mortgage it together.

Not quite an answer to your question, but have a look at MailChimp.

There are loads of similar companies but for the basics we find it works really well. The reports are good, updating lists is simple and it looks after the unsubcribes for you too.

We pay $14.99 a month for over 2,000 subscribers (I think), but you can try them for free and keep it free depending on the size of your distribution lists.

The reports tell you how many people open and read, and how lond people spend clicking through the content. After a few campaigns, it ranks your subscribers by how much they interact with the email so you can start to target different people in different ways.

Well worth the money, in our opinion…

I can only assume there was an awful lot of acid consumed in the creation of ITNG. The characters, colours, flying bandstands and so on. I imagine the creative meetings were great…

I’m with Joe too: those Haahoos must have come from a bad trip.

I really like the 29 MudX, but somebody else on here hates them… Horses. Courses.

I was out today in the woods. Wet, muddy and slippery. At low pressures, the grip over roots seems brilliant: better than the 26 equivalent.

The Blade does everything well. It’s arguably the perfect sports bike for our roads.

Everything else is better at one or two things, but nothing else feels as rounded or capable to me. You can leave the GSXR 1000 out of that though: that just feels horrible…

I’ve got a Ghisallo which is light and comfy. I’m 13st so I’m supposed to find it flexy, but I don’t.

It looks good (to me, anyway) and it just feels a bit more alive than a carbon bike somehow. If I was buying carbon, I’d go Parlee or Giant. Not many carbon frames really do it for me.

I suppose a carbon frame generally seems to kill more of the road buzz in comparison.

When I’m sweaty and filthy after a ride, the last place I want to sit to eat cake is somewhere spotlessly clean. I’d much rather have something a bit more rustic… Plus, the cake at the Hub was really, really good.

don’t do it. ios4 kills the 3g iphone. had to get rid of mine after i updated because it was so slow

+1. I couldn’t believe Apple allowed the 3G to take the software. Absolutely unusable in my experience.

We did the TT route up Grenoble about ten years ago. About two thirds of the way up my HR had been at 190+ for about 30 minutes when I started losing colour from my vision and I thought I was about to die. I backed off at that point.

I was pretty fit at the time but still about two or three times slower than the pros that went up two days later…

I’m just building a Salsa Fargo up, Nick.

Umming and erring over medium or large, went with the latter which means no doubt I’ll be selling it for a medium in a few weeks… 🙂

Was planning on making it a cheap build and then before I know it I’ve bought a Rasta King headset, some Crossmax 29ers and other inappropriate bits. I’ll never learn. Pictures some time next week before taking it to the Lakes for a week once it’s finished.

I’ve been off the bike since December, just too much on at work. I’ve never been off a bike for more than four weeks in 20 years.

Ironically, since December I’ve finally found myself in a place of work that I can commute to on bike, and I thought I’d be absolutely flying by now. 🙁

I’m spending too, to pretend I’m still a cyclist. I bought a new 2010 Ghisallo frame in April (silly cheap) amd I’m about to order either a Salsa Vaya, Fargo or Surly Troll and build it up with mudguards and a Hamax baby seat so I can ride it to work and drop Junior off at nursery on the way.

I have got to start riding again: I’m even more generally grumpy than normal… Booked two hols in the Lakes for July and October so I’d better get some miles in before that, or carrying my son on my back or in a trailer is going to kill me.

    Typing this was strangely motivating!

The 130mpg thing is reality, our first customer is getting more than that but it’s a very light rider and I don’t think he’s giving it the beans too often… It’s always tough to quote a number I suppose.

The 0% deals runs out at the end of the month, being replaced with a low rate finance deal. If the term stays the same, you’ll pay a little under £200 in interest on the new scheme.

I think commuting by bike is as safe as you make it. Watch you speed in 30 and 40 zones especially, keep away from the gutter, especially when there are side roads joining and wear bright, safe gear. Odds are you’ll be just fine! 🙂

I’ve got a soft spot for Teneres Woody – good call…

If you’re anywhere near Newcastle, then we’ve got more PCXs coming on Tuesday. They are pretty thin on the ground at the moment with demand very strong. They’ll do closer to 130mpg too…

If you are local to us, then we’ve got a Richa clothing package for £365 which is helmet, jacket, gloves, trousers and boots. If you bought the bike from us I’d do you the clothing with a healthy bit of STW discount… If you’re not local, then I’d always suggest using a dealer closer to home instead. A bit more info at newcastlemotorcycles.co.uk.

Woody. We might have a plain black RF900 coming in this week for a used ZX10. He wants decent money for it though. I could let you know if it comes in?

    /advert over 😉

I’m sitting here with a big lump on my left knee and a sore shoulder after diving out of the way of some daft bint who lost it going around a corner.

When she came to a stop she would have missed me by a couple of foot, but there was no way of knowing that as she came spinning towards me. Luckily there was plenty snow so I didn’t kill me new jacket at the same time…

No problem riding on the snow and ice on the bike if you were the only one out there, it’s the other road users that are the danger when it’s this slippery.

We have an 07 D5 in 185 guise.

The SE we have is specced pretty well, but if you go for leather don’t forget to spec heated seats or you’ll hurt the residual. Same with manual gearbox really.

The auto box takes as age to pull away from stand-still, but you get used to it… Ours is at 38k miles now and we now need the rear discs doing. Otherwise, only the solanoid on the box has gone wrong.

Seats are very comfy, it’s fine in the snow and it’s plenty big enough inside.

As others have said, find a local servicing company to avoid regualar £500 services. We get about 26 mpg driven fairly conservatively. The £400 VED is a bit of a git, but you know what you’re getting into when you buy it.

I’d consider a low mileage two year old car, as we did. A year on the warranty to cover niggles, and a big saving as the residuals crash in the first year. We paid about £21k for a 17k mile, one owner minter from a main dealer with everything we wanted apart from Bluetooth…

    We really like ours.

Thanks for that, I’ll definitely look into a second DS.

The application we’re installing is essentially a decent sized database. Frequent read/writes of small packets of data, hence the RAID1.

When you say a hot spare, are you talking about making another image of the drive every day, that’s not a USB backup? We’ve got 4 spare hot swap bays so it’ll be cheap enough to bash another drive in there…

Really appreciate everybody’s help. Thanks! 🙂

Thanks Fuzzy. I’ll look further into the backups to make sure I’m covered. I think I am but I’ll be certain (I’m just using the built in backup but have carefully chosen my options. I’m backing up to two USB hard drives, one stays on site on one goes off-site.

What you’re saying about a second DC confirms what I thought seemed logical, thanks.

We didn’t go RAID5, we’ve just gone for two RAID1 arrays some decent SAS drives. One covers the OS, the other has any software installs and the users files. I did wonder if RAID1 was good enough mind, but again cost came into it… Do you think that’s a big mistake?

EDIT: Sorry, daft question. Why would I lose a domain, as such? Would it just corrupt (does this happen often), and is it a case of re-building it if it does?

Brassneck. Do I just create two profiles then from copy here: My Computer Properties > Advanced > User Profiles Settings?

We’ve just spend about £8k on a decent server (GL380), workstations and backups. I’ve scheduled daily bare metal recovery (the VSS setting was changed) and I think it’s all in order.

A second server right now is cost prohibitive as we’re about to spend another £8k or so on the software we need. We’re pretty much over our IT budget for the next few years 😉

I’ll have alook at cached credentials, thanks for that…
