Yes, sorry, the server is a domain controller but performs few functions really. Haven’t looked a cloud AD, will now…

I think I think we may not need a server either.

Tons of stuff. Building a new Transition Smuggler this weekend: all new kit apart from an old Selle Italia Flite Gel 😊

    I think it’s from 1991.

Just replaced a Benin 20 with an Orbea MX24 and another Orbea MX20 for my youngest. Great value, nice build, good weight…

Both came with 70mm stems which I changed to 35mm, they were a touch long. Other than that, really impressed.

Thanks both, it’s not long term, it’s stuff I use every week.  Between the three main motorbike jackets and trousers, countless windproof gilets and soft shells, goretex shells, offroad motorbike kit and armour and christ knows how many pairs of boots, shoes and helmets I just need to get it out of the house…

Rone, does the kit not get a bit damp and smelly (no offence) 😉

I think triggers are much easier, once they have enough power and movement in their thumb…

My 8 year old took about 5 minutes to tell me he much preferred triggers, but my 5 year old is struggling a bit with them, just pushing the downshift lever far enough to engage a change.  I’m going to give it another week or two before I get him some thumbies or Gripshift.

I love commuting by motorbike – saves me so much time.

I’m currently commuting on either a Triumph Scrambler (the new 900, Street Twin derivative – it’s brilliant and more fun than the Africa Twin it replaced) or a CRF250L if we’re going home via a few lanes.

The latter has almost no power, is too heavy for an offroad bike and has cheap suspension (it’s £4,700 at the end of the day) yet it’s fast becoming one of the best bikes I’ve ever had. I just love it, on road and off, and probably shouldn’t.

That or the CRF250 Rally are great in traffic, light on fuel, cheap to insure and replace parts, and great fun off-road.  8,000 mile service intervals means it’s cheap to run.  If you like mountain biking, then depending on where you live, you might like the odd lane on the loop on the way home sometimes too.

All that said, I was just saying to my wife this morning that I fancy a new Turbo Levo for commuting in.  It’s only 10 miles or so (nearly all offroad) and I’m pretty fit at the moment again, but I want one for those days where you just can’t be arsed to pedal home in the wind and rain after a hard day, or getting on in the dark on a wet, windy cold morning (ironically, I’ll probably go on the turbo when I get back).

Mikewsmith nailed it on the third post for me – kids can’t stand out for lack of choice or quality.

We both work full time, and have two kids, so we buy five t shirts, five jumpers and five pairs of trousers each so we can lay them out on a Sunday and not have to think about it through the week.

Shoes and coats not included (neither are prescribed), the cost per child is about £100 per year. We’ll need to top up later in the year, but we could have bought half the amount of clothing if we had time to keep on top of it every mid week. We don’t always.

Some local authorities offer support to those that can’t afford it, and some schools use some of their pupil premium money to help those that can’t afford it.

I’m aware some schools may have much more expensive uniforms, but out of all of my friends, I haven’t come across any of them.

As a parent of two boys, I’d take uniform over free choice every time, without hesitation.

The only thing that keeps me dry in heavy rain is a one piece oversuit.

I have Proshell Goretex, and I’m wet on the front in heavy rain. The issue isn’t the garment but wind blowing water up and in from the bottom of the jacket.

I don’t like cigarette smoke, but I’d rather that than the smell of nearly all of the vapes.

I can’t ever remember holding my breath when sat behind a cigarette smoker in a traffic or walking down the high street, but the huge white cloud of toffee apple or cinnamon coming out of a window or in front of you in the street is way more intrusive, and imo smells a lot worse. Horrible stuff.

I have never commented on these threads before. I think it’s hard to without making sweeping generalisations, nevertheless…

This is one of the few websites I visit nearly every day, mostly lurking, occasionally posting stuff nobody is interested in (still reading)?

It’s worth subscribing to me, but mostly because of the other people who contribute. I like the magazine a lot, when I read it, but mostly I’m happy to pay to keep the community going. Yes it’s a business, but with the greatest of respect, I don’t imagine that Mark and others are ordering their Ferrari anytime soon off the dividends…

That said, I liked the old forum because it worked. I could comment, reply and quote without issue but the new one is so unpredictable that I don’t really post at all now. I’m not sure I’m missed. In fact, I know I’m not.

GDPR has seemingly killed the internet. Few of the cookie scrips are at all effective on any site. Flipboard has become unusable, for example.

I fear that this site will slowly die if the issues aren’t sorted, however that is done. I don’t want it to, I like it and the guys behind it a lot. I’ll keep supporting it with a subscription until it does, hoping that somebody is able to make it stable (especially on mobile).

I like Wunderlist and Todoist, but now I need to share it in Microsoft Teams (which I really like) so increasingly I’m using Planner and OneNote.

Planner lets you create Buckets (task lists) and move the tasks around within it, create time schedules and assign tasks to others (if that’s your thing). Browsers and iOS apps both work well, and I think it’s really good for what I need.

The biggest issue with it is anybody can mark tasks as complete, or delete them all together.  I think that’s an issue and I think they are working on permissions for a future release. If it’s just for you though, it’s great.

    This thread, man 🙂

This made me chuckle: In the spirit of previous replies to this thread, you should have had your child earlier in life.

Whereas this, which I think was aimed at me: Yep. Person makes loads of life choices that limit their free time and then wishes they had more free time. Typical e-biker attitude right there.

Weird.  Are there really many of us out there who don’t want more free time? It doesn’t mean I’m not happy with my ‘life choices’.

Pretty much every post anti-ebikes assumes that they are for fat, lazy people, who don’t want to make the effort. I just don’t understand it.  When I was fit (not super fit, but fit enough for sub 5hr centuries and sub 24min 10m TTs) I would have still wanted an ebike if they had been available.

They just look like a lot of fun.  I fancy one regardless of how fit I am now or next year – it’s just another way of having fun on two wheels. It wouldn’t replace my other bikes, just supplement them.

    @cookeaa

this… Citing a lack of fitness and/or time seems odd, if your fitness is an issue surely it’s worth making the extra time/effort to ride further and/or for longer on an “Analogue”bike to try and regain some of it…

…totally misses the point of my post and circumstances.

I used to spend about 7 hours a week riding, mostly on the road. Now I spend that 7 hours riding with my kids, playing football with them and swimming.

I don’t have more time I could find at this stage of my life between my kids, wife’s career and my own business.

Really struggle to understand why anybody cares whether I’m fit enough to do a sub 5 hour century or not, and whether I’m riding an ebike or a regular bike out on the trails.  Odd.

<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>I’ve been itching to buy a trials bike, or something in between like a Montessa 4Ride for a while. E-bikes look like another option for having a lot of fun on two wheels.</span>

Since having kids I’m not fit enough for a full day out in the hills. I’m goosed after an hour or two.

I can’t imagine wanting one at a trail centre (could be wrong) but an ebike would get me back on favourite 5 hour loops around the Lake District without a fear of a coronary…

    I want one.

I’m cautious about it as an adult, let alone a developing heart. I think moderation is best, I limit my 8 year old to about two hours/25 miles or so  no firm evidence why, just a hunch.

I’ve read lots over the past few years about endurance exercise and arrhythmia

I read this this morning and have thought of you a couple of times through today. So tough, and I’m sorry for your loss.

I lost my dad when I was 14, he was 43. My friends were amazing, and I spent most of my time worrying that mum was okay. She tried hard to protect me from how she was feeling but I recall vividly that all I wanted was her to open up and unload on me sometimes – I wanted to help and didn’t expect her to be bulletproof.

I appreciate that all circumstances are unique.

    1. They haven’t necessarily done anything wrong; half the world misunderstood the rules (having paid for duff advice from a consultant who only listened to half the workshop he did to put on his CV) – there is no actual requirement to seek your consent / opt in to communications.

The rules around sending unsolicited emails didn’t change with GDPR, they were set back in 2003 with the PECR regs.  What has changed with GDPR is how consent is recorded and how robust that is when tested.

My understanding is a company needs consent to send you unsolicited marketing emails and texts.  That consent can come in several forms, but really unless you have soft-opted in by making an enquiry or purchase from the company for a similar product in the recent(ish) past, they still need your consent for sending unsolicited electronic comms.

You can use legitimate interest to contact people as the consent, but not for unsolicited marketing.

None of this is meant to be arsey at all. If you think I’m wrong with this, I’d genuinely love to know what I’ve misunderstood so I can do a bit more.

lucky7500 I didn’t see any assumptions or generalisations in the op. Just a factual account of the ‘service’ offered to a potential customer.

    I thought there were lots:

    1.  That the girl is actually attractive to the person in the shop

    2.  That he used that as a basis for giving her terrible service (or her sex, but then why mention the attractive bit)

    3. That the sons account of the story to his dad was accurate

I personally find it next to impossible to believe that a bloke in a shop laughed in a girls face when she wanted to buy a bike, and ended the conversation by laughing again before saying “cycling’s a lot different from spin-classes.” without the boyfriend feeling like he should say something to somebody there and then (or more accurately, the girl asking to speak to a manager herself, because you know, girls are actually capable of speaking up for themselves).

Regardless, if it’s true, my point really was why not tell the manager so he could do something about it, whether it be disciplinary or training, rather than go home and write about it on the internet and sully the name of a shop without finding out first if the manager/owner thought it was acceptable behaviour by the staff or the culture of the business.

It seems these days like some people prefer to be offended so they can write about it on the internet, rather than give a business a chance to do something about it.  I just find that odd.

    iamtheresurrection

Probably. I thought the tone of the OP was assumptions and generalisations so I’d make one too.

    iamtheresurrection

Why have you aimed the ‘big rant’ at the Giant store in general, and not just the pillock working in it.

Staff training is one thing, but you can’t expect the store to know in advance what every member of staff is going to say.

Why not bring it to the attention of the management, rather than bad mouthing the entire shop on the internet because of one kid?

£9,987.  The place where you bought the car have to give you £9,987 any other dealer can give you whatever they think the car is worth

    </div>
Its not the dealer who give the guarantee, it’s the finance house. The supplying dealer doesn’t have to take it back or value it at that (although they nearly always will).

Kryton: from experience, I’d expect a trade in value on that kind of price car to be about £1,500 less than what you’re seeing them for sale at a dealer – all things being equal.

So, my PCP is ending and I’ve had the letter.  My car that has a final payment of £9,987 seems to be valued at around £11000 – £12500 depending on where you look.

Where are you getting the value of £11,000-£12,500 from?

Sorry, there was wine in the numbers, I’d ran two sets and it should have read 55% on retail jobs, and 45% of your time is taking to customers, building bikes, making coffee, milling around and so on.

Even at £7.05 an hour salary, on the same stats above would come out at £30.41 per hour retail inc VAT, before profit.

My mate of mine was baulking at the £90 per hour he’s just been charged on his car, whilst happily thinking the £120 per hour for his tattoos is a bargain. I know who has the bigger costs…

    iamtheresurrection
    Full Member

The hourly rate conversation always comes up.

Based on paying a tech £9 per hour, giving him 28 days holiday inc stats, paying 13.8% employer NI and loading a £10k share of the overhead on the workshop, a one tech workshop would need to charge £36 inc VAT per hour to break even (£49,921 divided by 1,380 hours), based on achieving 75% efficiency every week of the year (unlikely).

They probably got into business to make a profit though, and when they do, they’ll pay 20% corporation tax on that too.

Without thinking about the numbers behind it, most people will just see the 4x markup on an estimated hourly wage and assume it’s profit. It’s not.

Edit: If I was an LBS, and somebody walked in with a bike not bought from me and parts to fit, also not from me, then I’d want to clear at least £20 per hour profit, so about £60 per hour total, to make sure I built up enough profit to pay myself a wage for hiring somebody, stocking a shop, taking the risk and putting my house on the line, filling the coffee machine, covering damage and loss and so on.

I can. Ever have a question to which you don’t actually want to know the answer?

I’m sure the answer must be yes, at least for a snapshot in time. Not sure it’s yes on any issue for a long time though.

I’d understand if that was the only thing underpinning her faith, but it’s any question which could be asked on any topic.

I think the thread has gone off in a strange direction. The OP, I thought, was asking for questions to answer to do with religion – whereas the thread is talking a lot about what god is.

I don’t really link the two. The very existence of the universe suggests something created it, there could be a creator I suppose, don’t really see how anyone can argue strongly either way that something conscious could be behind it, somehow.

Religion on the other hand, is about the most bizarre thing I’ve ever been part of.

I’ve got a great friend who’s a veggie and a RC. She believes it all, Old and New, including literal understanding of the Eucharist and transubstantiation. [cheapshot] Veggie Monday to Saturday, cannibal on a Sunday.[/cheapshot]

She’s got a PhD, yet simply won’t entertain any discussion that she may be wrong… I respect her choices, but can’t understand how she refuses to question it – that shouldn’t be a contradiction. Faith, she’ll say.

Is it not a little disingenuous to give the gift of life, and then demand thanks for it every day in return?

If I’d given such an awesome gift, I’d rather you each spent it doing great things, not thanking me every five minutes but then asking me for more with every prayer.

How much did Pope Alexander VI pay for his 50 prostitutes to celebrate the festival of the saints. Did God consider it money well spent from the purse?

Was God really okay with Lot’s daughters getting him drunk and raping him after destroying Sodom?

Jesus, the list really is endless.

Edit. Sorry. When Jesus performed the miracle which cursed the fig tree for having no fruit, even though it was out of season, was God embarrassed by his son’s petulance and abuse of power in killing the tree? I’d have Jesus on the naughty step for that one…

You’ll likely only buy ex VAT if it’s an internal transaction within the LEA.

You’ll claim VAT back for goods from other suppliers. Generally, schools don’t sell goods or services so don’t pay output VAT, but you would need to add VAT to the sale of any ‘other income type’ item sold from the school to you; including things like selling yourself the old photocopier.

Generally, a Madison trade account is more expensive than stuff from CRC apart from obscure stuff that CRC don’t discount.

EDIT. Sorry, just seen your post further down where you said you’re not selling them on. Still probably cheaper through CRC

No, not comparing it to it as such, as I thought my second line said… It’s clearly nowhere near as bad a movie as TPM, but it didn’t have the right feel (like TPM) and nowhere near as good as TFA or Rogue One.

If they’d just left the cheap humour on the cutting floor, left out that weird Leia scene and made it a bit dirtier I’d have enjoyed it so much more.

As it was, it felt cheesy and disjointed, and I left disappointed.

    iamtheresurrection

I thought it was a good kids movie, much like Episode I. Not much in it for me.

Not saying it was as bad as the unmentionable one really, but the cheap humour was really off putting, and the audience in our cinema laughed way too hard at some of the bits. Weird. The bit where the daft little creature did Chewy’s roar really pissed me off.

The whole thing was a bit of a cheese-fest. Shame.

Can’t come close to touching Rogue One or Empire
