glad you got it sorted. why not keep them on. Just get a grip and cut it down. Even if the actual gripshift twister is worn doesn’t matter. They usually carry on working for an age and are pretty nifty pieces of kit.

thanks.probably not a good idea after all.

not sure about this model but if there’s a small steel plate with a hump that makes the clicks just put it back in the right position after a bit of trail and error and line everything up correctly.

    if not this may help??

or this more likely – maybe

match the shifter position with the position of the cable. ie cable not tight = minimum cable pull = determines gear number and shifter position, against markings on the case – put back together and twist to tighten the cable and move cable/gears.

mitcham roll on is brilliant ( and very very effective) and does not cause this issue. Just make sure it dries fully which may take a few minutes

if it’s super nasty and embarassing make it into a ratcar. Although this may make it more so depending on your view. 15 cans of grey primer maybe and some time. Some colour on the wheels sorted.

why does the rear triangle pivot around the bb? Is it so you can run it single speed?

i should add my comments are not based on race at all. I personally think it’s best to stay away from any group acting like this tbh

avoid them, do not stare at them, and do not confront them.they are prolly looking for a reason for a fight/conflict imho. Suppose it’s different if someone is in real danger.

haven’t read the whole thread.Maybe check the earths and cables. Clean and refit after discounting battery.

also tried 661’s higher up the range but settled for lower one as it just felt a more suitable ( snug ) fit.

In my experience ( which prolly differs to others) non xc type helmets often feel a little on the tight side when off the bike anyway and when correctly fitting and when the straps are adjusted correctly etc. As long as it is not actually uncomfortable, just very snug, i personally find in application helmet is usually spot on.

my 661 comp is pretty tight, esp around the jaw and i feel this is a good thing. never been an issue whilst in use. Just a little bit harder to remove. I wouldn’t be happy if there was any movement personally tbh.

I tried the next size up too and was confident this design suited me after trying loads of other types on in the correct sizes. Although the next size 661 comp felt a little better off the bike, it was actually too big really.

During use, The foam may have moulded / compacted slightly too which I guess may be more effective if a little tight in the first place, rather than not very tight initially, then adjusting and maybe getting even looser. Just IMHO.

the only thing you may need to do web searching for is a square taper bb with the correct ( long ) axle length and also factor in some v brakes.Having said all of that an old kona or gt or similar would be good too i guess. Also everything is relative, ie slack compared to many others at the time, shortish stems compared to many others others at the time, large tyre clearance compared to many others etc..Although I am no expert..

they’re brilliant bikes. There’s no issue with parts at all. All the bearings are simple items to replace and service. They can run very large tyres such as probably High Rollers or slightly smaller so they can be comfortable. The geometry is actually pretty slack feeling. Not sure of the head angle though. Unless you have the saddle really high they do not have a head down feeling. Anyway the bars can usually be raised with the quill stem. The stem heights if you look at the pics are raised, rather than older bikes that had straight stems. The stems are also pretty short. Not a bad price IMHO if it’s not rusted and in good order, although you may get something similar/better on ebay a bit cheaper maybe. If it’s low range £60 to £70, mid range £70 to £80 maybe at a guess. Have a look at ebay for others and see the bid prices etc. All in my humble opinion. Also not exactly sure of that particular model in terms of how high up in the range it is. Having said that there’s probably loads of similar retro type bikes on ebay that you may prefer for a similar price. Not sure I’d wanna be riding freeride parks on it though. Also they may weight a bit but they ride really light feel surefooted and are quite nimble.

try rotating them in the stem.Maybe slide your saddle to a different position on the rails too. ie move everything back a bit.

i think alot of time it depends on the actual design / setup just as much as the travel.Just get something that suits your riding interests’s although i guess the genius of these long travel designs is that they may open up more types of riding.

I really like the more upfront notion.

ps concentrated lemon juice is good for rust and loosens bolts if left for an hour or two and then redone if needed etc. Just avoid paint etc. Loads of little gems like this are learnt. The combo of lemon and then penetration spray then lemon etc can work wonders too if fittings are bad.

Look on ebay for everything..even small stuff like cables and outers 1m lengths for £2.00 etc. That’s how you keep the costs down. It’s all the small things that add up etc. They may not be as good as your mtb ones but should be fine for road use. It cost nothing so you should keep it that way 🙂

meant to get it to like brand new show condition may cost a fair bit or require access to proper tools, such as polishers etc.

agreed Neil. DIY polishing, rust removal, etc is good. If you need to do something there’s always info online about methods etc

The only invaluable tool I would say to buy is a digital measuring ruler thing. Brilliant for working out odd sizes/stds/bearings etc Prolly be about £8

Prolly get a bb for a fiver or so and it will almost certainly last 5 years or maybe 20. Same with other stuff.

take it from someone who has done this 9 of sorts) It is worth it. It’s unlikely to cost much if the fundamental parts are sound. However it may take some time. This however wouldn’t be for a full restore, as it may be a money pit if you want everything like new.

ie. – you prolly do not need to replace the headset. Clean old one and get £2 of bearings from a supplier. Tyres – search ebay etc, look for clearance deals on parts. Cranks can prolly be polished with some effort etc. Surely a fixie is only going to get grimmy and work on the roads anyway. Why make it perfect? I thought was the whole idea of them anyway.

It may be time consuming as that last wheel nut may take 2 hours to loosen, those wheel bearings need to be sourced, that cotterpin needs replacing etc.. but that’s all part of the fun and satisfaction at the end.

I would just make it functional and look presentable. Wouldn’t bother with a full restoration personally.

Good luck. When it works you’ll love it.

get some proper shoes for flats and you shouldn’t have any issues..as said stiffer soles..i’ve had this if I commute in normal trainers on the bmx. Too much pressure on the arch of the foot. Solved by wearing good quality skate shoes with a stiff sole.As the sole is flexing, i guess the extra pressure and flex on the sole above the pedal is causing pressure on foot from the upper part of the shoe being stretched..which may be causing a pressure point..restricting blood flow ?? maybe

think you can also get mouldable inner soles for ski/snowboarding.. either for your riding or post riding shoes ..or both

i replaced a pair of bars. It was awful. Kept telling myself it couldn’t be just the bars…so i adjusted them and then some more..i told myself I must have just forgot the feeling since the weekend before.

Changed the bars again.. a week later – felt spot on again..and that’s without even tweeking them..

    just shows…

    he’s got a decent looking bike..good
he may well get the sport from mixing with other riders..good
he then may make his mum see sense – hopefully

and get her to buy him some protection…
he may then get to keep bmxing

some people….prehaps her and her friends should start up a group helping out, if it’s that important to her. Although that will prolly involve standing out in all weathers, with no financial gain,so I doubt that will appeal.
