Another vote for Hope district, I hardly ever use the high power setting but have been really grateful for it when caught in fog. The battery lasts forever as well so you don’t need to keep taking it off and charging it. Seems to cope with water and mud better than most others too. I have a Magic Shine rear light as well and the switch gives up as soon as it sees a drop of water.

Pleased it worked, I had a few that did not when building the bike.

Definite vote for a Hope district, for one the name’s great for a red light!

For another, was on the main road in thick fog this morning with mine and actually felt safe with the 110 lumens burning someone’s retina’s! It cost £94 from CRC with a voucher, Ribble also have them at a decent price.

My friend did some hill repeats on Edgehill earlier in the year, 94 of them if you want a target 🙂

You could always come further over to Illmington hill as there are more ways up it and I personally prefer it to Edgehill.

I use a response alarm wireless system, garage and front and rear doors are part armed at night, the garage doors ‘chime’ whenever opened during the day, about an hour to fit – highly recommended!

Probably need something with clown wheels one day, not sure when though, enjoying the road bike too much at present (did I say that out loud….!)

I’ve probably spent too much on both my kids, my 12 year old has an XT equipped Orange Crush with a 150mm Sektor and decent tubeless wheels, my view is that if I have to maintain the bikes then I want decent stuff to work with and why should the lightest, least powerful member of the family have to push the heaviest bike around?
As a result, we do loads of family rides, my eldest alternates between a carbon HT of mine and an old (2006) Marin Mount Vision.
The plan for the Orange is to get another frame soon when he outgrows this one and swap the bits over – the frame was £200 new in a sale and should get £150 second-hand – all good value stuff really that has helped the whole ‘family enjoyment’ stuff.
You only have a short window of time where your kids want to do things with you so make the most of it 🙂

It’s worth having a look to the west, I live in shipston on stour which is about 20 mins from banbury. Moved here from Edinburgh via Cambridge and really like this area.

Some reasonable bridle trails that can be ridden easily from home in the area or better ones further west towards Broadway.

If you move to the area give me a call, details in profile.

Hi rickon, had exactly the same problem with a trailstar Hans Dampf at the weekend and starting pulling the side knobs off, very surprising as I definitely do not lean on the bike hard and it seems to have happened after only 2 days at Afan, was also looking at a 2.5 Minion DHF to replace it with, would be interested to know how you get on.
ps Thanks again for the BB inserts you sent me ages ago, still working fine.

Was also hoping to get out on Wednesday’s stage as it follows nearly exactly the same as our return route on our Sunday run the other day back from the Malverns and over Snowshill etc but unfortunately work has killed that.

Coming back to the lens issue, probably not helpful but I use an 18-200 that covers all aspects you will need for most bike photography, worth having a look at if budget allows or n+1 theory 🙂

Out of the choice you have, I’d probably go with the longer lens and focus on detail rather than panoramic.

Have a good day, not jealous….

psling – thanks for stopping and chatting with them, they had a great time and really enjoyed it, in fact they were on a complete high when they got in after the last descent. Are you the chap from FoD?

Every one they met was great with lots of encouragement for Fraser, that helped him hugely to make it round. It’s the first time he’s ridden an event like that without being pushed along by me, I was quite worried about leaving them but my eldest lad wanted to have a go at the long route this time. I needn’t have worried as they always felt they had support if they ever needed it 🙂 thanks to all.

The guy crashed on the road did not look good when I passed by, hope he’s ok?

Managed to get my whole family round today, my 12 yr old rode with my wife and finished the course which I’m really quite proud off! I rode with my 15 yr old with the intent to get him round the long course but mud and headwind meant we took the shorter route unfortunately.

Hope others had a good day and the guy that crashed is ok.

ahwiles – I did some at the weekend with the same problem, I had to release a small amount of fluid from the caliper bleed point to push the pistons back fully, it seems to have worked okay but ordered a bleed kit just in case…..

My recent one was the spokes creaking against each other, Gt85’ve them and it went away….ended up changing the rear wheel! Ps avoid oiling the rim if rim brakes or the disk 🙂

I think Sian from the race in the first clip now runs the ‘old school B&B’ at Coed y Brenin with her husband where I stayed last year, definitely recommended, beautiful setting, building, hospitality and food!

Join something like the Edinburgh Road Club, they do a few organised runs that get you familiar with good road routes. I think there’s a Saturday (maybe Sunday) morning ride from the Commonwealth pool.

I had a set of very cheap Bontrager RXL branded bars off ebay about 5 months ago, they have now just cracked. I suspect if they were proper Bontrager bars they would not have.

I took the leap a while ago of buying proper branded carbon bars for my road bike as I think the risk in this area is just too high if you suffered a failure.

Don’t do what happened to me…..it started in the Canny Mans pub in Edinburgh and ended in the Golf tavern (not very far) where I was hung out an upper floor window, clothes removed, they were then soaked, neatly folded and put in the freezer while two strippers and a snake arrived….

I’m sure the modern ‘stag weekends’ are much more inclusive now 🙂

Can I just say that I am always impressed when ‘the boss’ gets involved in a forum, probably with no chance of winning a debate as it’s one against many.

I will continue to buy from Planet X as they represent good value on many parts, I hope I will not be let down by customer service but I am definitely willing to take the risk due to competitive pricing.

When running a company it’s not always easy to get the overhead level correct to provide the perfect service and low prices….. It’s always easy to criticise!

Have a think about an F1 or Le Mans driver, do you think he would fancy going back to an Alu chassis? Probably not.

I do the incorrect thing and hit it with the pressure washer, never actually seems to cause them harm – you just have to keep the jet away from all the bearing seals on the wheel/suspension. Maybe a bit of muck off on it first.

With too many bikes in the family I could spend days just cleaning and not riding so it seems the best solution, keen to hear other ideas.

Time to go a bit retro, these were taken about 30 years ago when preparing for our summer excursion to the British Track Championships where my poor old Ford Cortina got loaded with 8 bikes and an indeterminate quantity of wheels plus a few teenagers with shaved legs.
A small claim to fame on this one is the lad with the reddish hair went on to finish 4th in the Men’s Sprint at the 1988 Olympics, unfortunately due to lack of talent I didn’t achieve any fame like that 🙁

Slightly lower cost than most listed here but Shimano RS80 and RS81’s are worth a look, http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-rs81-c24-carbon-laminate-wheels-pair-62700.html?utm_campaign=googlebase-GB&utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=shopping&utm_term=Factory+Road+Wheels&gclid=CPCehOmpjr4CFWTlwgodpL4AcQ

Great day out, got the whole family round today, I took my 12 year old with me and we completed the 50k in just over 4 hours with mum and eldest in at 3 and a half. I thought the signage was good and organisation worked well.

Pleased the kids are on holiday today as they are knackered!

Definitely a few proud dad moments yesterday and more enjoyable than chasing a good time on the 100k on my own!

I have a couple of sets of Black Flag Pro and I think the freehub is the same, if it is then it’s serviceable, the oem sealed bearings (2 off) that support the freehub have been rubbish, needing changed on both my wheels. I think it’s a case or unscrewing the outer adapter and then just pulling the freehub off and knocking out the bearings. The pall’s and springs are conventional and easy to deal with.

In fact all the bearings in my Sun ringle wheels have had to be changed…..

These guys are great for bike hire, based in Paguera (SW and about 30mins from Palma) http://www.bicycle-holidays.com/en/cycling-stations/detailview-radsportstationen/?hID=7

All the riding up the west coats is great, this was a typical route I did last summer http://app.strava.com/activities/74317110
