part of the cost could be if they have to switch off the existing line to do the work, if that line serves alot of customers, or vital infrastructure (water treatment plant for example) and an alternative supply isnt there then they may have to bring in generators etc to maintain supply whist they do the work, the planning of that and leafleting of affected properties etc will all be included in their quote
It could also be that a new pole is needed as well as a transformer etc
Its not always as simple as just connecting two bits of wire and putting a plug on the end (but Im sure you understand that already)
Without further breakdown of the WPD price it would be difficult to comment, but £13.5k does not sound too unreasonable (and I would be suprised if they are letting you completely lay and backfill the cable yourselves?)

the pharmacy in larger Asdas loan out the ones for use in pregnancy for about £20 a month, thats where my wife got hers from
You could always rent one for a month and see if it does any good
Manor Phamacy (not sure if national or just round here) and Boots also do them
You may get some funny looks from the checkout girl though ;)

    yeah not bad
Quite small in the crotch area
I have 2 pairs, use them when others are in the wash
They have lasted a few years now

for their price they are worth it as a spare

Their gloves are pretty decent too

"Ti" for example usually refers to an alloy of 3% aluminium, 2.5% vanadium, 94.5% titanium (other variations like 6% Al, 4% V, 90% Ti also exist)

    Mines both :D
    3-2.5 main tubes
6-4.5 or whatever for the bottom bracket and head tubes
I have no idea what it all means and what difference it makes other than its all great ;D

    I love my Ti
I dont care if its better/lighter/stiffer/whatevers compared to whatever other material or bike
Its my bike I love riding it and thats all that matters to me

    17 pence per business mile

Irrelevent of the size of your allowance (which in reality is just salary) the IR allows your company to pay you up to 40ppm (first 10k) tax free. If they pay you less, you can claim the net back from the IR.

yes well aware of that, have my claim for last year registered with IR at the mo. You dont get the cash though as I understand, just an adjustment to your tax code
You can also claim a rate per mile for business miles done by bike, or giving a colleague a lift

rkk01 – completely agree, that was roughly my findings too, I worked it out at about 25k business miles last year, but also depends if you get private fuel allowance too – that for me was the real tax killer even with the escalating price of diesel
Agree with you on pool car too

having just switched from company car to my own 8 months ago I can tell you that for a comparable sized car, and with only a relatively moderate allowance (£6100 a year and 17 pence per business mile) I am working it out that I am approx £200 a month better off and that includes all fully comp with business milage (20k+ per year)insurance for me and wife etc
Given a service costs around £150, a set of new tyres £200 and brake pads etc say another £200 tops even with the occasional unforeseen incident that still means I am raking it in in comparison
Ok I don't have quite such a fancy badge on the front but I actually prefer this car to the company car, I have something to show for the payments and I now have a proper insurance history but thats all a bit off topic

Sounds like the OP works for an arsehole of a backwards company IMO

Any company car I ever had was provided on the basis that it was available for use by any of my colleagues during work hours

sod that given the amount of tax you pay for a company car these days I wouldnt have accepted that situation where office junior could rag it round at lunchtimes leaving his empty mcdonalds wrappers in it
Its your car regardless of it being a company car, not some wierd pool car that you pay through the nose for

guess that depends if you need cleats or not really?
if for a 2nd or commuter bike etc and you already have cleats on your shoes….

Absolute Cycles ebay shop, used them loads of times, really quick service and often have alot of good bargains (they prob have cleats on there for less than £7 too if you look at the other listings)

On an Alpine, probably not, but most top tubes can be pretty thin, and you wouldn't want to crush it in the clamp.

the workstand is there to support the bike only, surely you shouldnt have to clamp it so tight as to dent / crush metal, and a decent clamp on a decent workstand should reasonably spread the load
What you doing to the frame whilst its clamped – swinging off it?
during a normal bike build, there shouldnt be anything that needs that much torque applied that the clamp has to be solidly tight

Oh and what if you have a carbon seatpost (or even a carbon frame) where would you clamp then?

Order of componants doesnt matter, personally I would do headset cups first bottom bracket second, but after that any old order
Obviously seat is easier to add to post before post in frame, and bar 'furniture' is easiest when bar is attached to bike etc but thats only common sense

"first shop I went to said £20 labour "

so what do you think I have done!?!
The other place charges per half hour and apparently cannot tell me how long it will take and therefore a price (which doesnt fill me with confidence – surely he has built wheels before so has a rough idea!)

Havent had time yet to trapse around the others as I am at work, whilst at work though I can get STW
I just wondered if that was competitive?

Sorry if my question wasted your time but you didnt have to respond (especially as it was pointless and totaly unhelpful)

wheel is 9mm through axle, and tubeless
I want to keep the flexability of the Hope Hub as next upgrade is some QR15 fork lowers, besides its brand new would seem a shame to loose money by selling it
I can get a cheap wheel to tide me over from a mate (then I also need a QR skewer) but I really would like to replace what was on there with similar, a slightly different rim I can live with (hence thinking still keep it Stans) but a completely different wheel altogether I would rather avoid

I wouldnt bother doing a Sustrans route
Hora says they are all rubbish, unridable and go nowhere
besides, you will get lost assuming you even find it in the first place as the signs are too small

but as a national cycle network that might attract more than keen cyclists there's a long way to go.

Jeez some people are so ungrateful!
What more would you like with little or no government or private funding other than national lottery?
Its a damn site better than anything the country had even 10 years ago
Whilst it was originally called the Natioanl Cycle Network Sustrans is more than a cycle charity and they have to devise routes that are usabale by more than just cyclists
It is probably not an easy job to provide for every possible (non motorised) user so of course there will be compromises

I am a VOLUNTEER sustrans ranger in the adjacent area to you (assuming you are talking about the sherwood pines area)
I have passed your concerns on
if you could tell me what route it was in particular it may help?
Signing rides are normally organised in the spring time so it may be that either this didnt happen this year or there has been a high level of vandalism and signs have been removed
They are designed to be consistant and easy to read when travelling at a speed that is sensible on a shared multi use 'family' path. Place mnames are included on some signs, mainly at the start, end or any junctions between two routes, it would be impractical and expensive (charity remember) to sign every turning with destination names, a degree of familarity may be required but the network is primarily used by local regulars or people that have pre-planned a route – good maps are available from book and cycle shops or online.
There 'should' be clear signage indicating route number and direction as a minimum at every turn – there are quite good guidelines on signage for rangers
The network is meant to compliment existing rights of way – council managed cyclepaths etc not provide a complete door to door commuting service for you! (BTW it pretty much does that for me but i am quite lucky)
Als find the needing a mountain bike comment puzzling as I know alot of the other rangers around this area are elderly that do the job since retiring and alot of them travel by train with folding bikes and I have never heard of one path that was impassable?
