On something big travel (150+) as an ebike is likely to be, I’d be looking for 500+ reach and 660 odd reach.

    I’m tall as well, 6’4”.

Realistically it’s not a case of the “right size” it’s if their largest size is big enough for a given model. No mainstream bike will be too big, as at our height we’re taller than 99% of the population. If it was too big who would it be for?

Anyway that said, a good starting point is measure the bikes you have that fit you. Effective top tube, reach and stack are the most important measurements.

They depend a bit on type of bike, and the stem you’ll likely run, but as a rough guide I look for ETT 630+ and reach 480+

Reach can vary more than ETT tho as it depends on seat angle and type of bike more.

    Old (mk2 I think 2007)

Yeah – I said mk2 but technically a mk3. The 2nd shape that was new in 08 anyway, where the current is the third shape and a mk4.

I had a mk2 and looked at the mk3 on release but it’s worse for bikes.

In the mk2 even with my XL 29er enduro bikes I could get 3 in wheels on and 3 people. You can wheel them in and turn the bars and drop the wheel into the rear footwell to get the height. You can’t do this in a mk3 cos the seats fold down there rather than come out completely.

The person that designed the £12 IKEA Antilop jetwashable one size fits all high chair was an ergonomics genius

I reckon it literally might be one of the best designed things, ever. Any category. I mean it’d still be a great chair at any price, but it’s cheap too!

Hmm yeah could be, tho seems odd to have bosses with bolts rather than just hole with plugs. In the right places though.

Some clarity on mb/s and Mb/s from the OP would help here too.

Something I did that worked for me, but will depend a bit on you/the team.

A couple of times I’d start a teams/meet/whatever call when I was grabbing a coffee, dump the link in the team/company slack and say “Having a coffee if anyone else fancies it?”.

People dropped in just to say “hi”, or to see who else turned up, or just out of curiosity. Ended up having a few good chats, and getting other people talking to each other that wouldn’t normally. I appreciate not everyone can force themselves to be that outgoing though.

In general, make reasons to speak with people, and even if it _could_ be a quick slack/teams message, ask if they have 5 mins for a chat about X and make it a video call. Ask everyone you speak to who they think is the important person for you to speak to.

I am looking at buying a 2021 Epic or Epic Evo.

Can you actually buy one? There’s basically no stock.

fun is in the battles for a place here and there with the riders around you

    This. It’s fun cos:
    – See that person in front? Catch them.
    – See that person behind? Don’t let them catch you!

A good point made by the multi-monitor people is about window management. If you can’t or don’t want to manage windows, UW isn’t for you.

When I was in a mixed office where folk had a choice of 2×27 or 1×34/38 that was the main difference I observed. People on pairs of monitors tended to have _less_ open despite in theory more space, as they’d waste it a lot more either maximising or just snapping to half a screen.

If you’re on a dell or LG, they have management software to split monitors into zones so you can snap windows to pre-arranged sizes/patterns (dell’s software is better).

If you do a lot in a terminal, tmux with a 8×2 grid of panes on a 38UW is a thing of beauty.

It really depends what you mean by:

    Probably middle-of-the-road price wise.

To me, that’d be a nice 34” curved in the 5-700 price range. 38 if you can stretch a bit, or 4k@32” is reasonable on windows at 125%.

Depending on laptop, if it’s modern and does USBC power then most of the high end dells/ LG do usbc-PD so only one cable to the laptop for power and display.

Came across this the other day from Litespeed I don’t know exactly what input they had or even if they built anything but Mars Rover, Curiosity.

They made the rocker bogies – that’s the frames/linkages that connect the wheels to the body.

I fit a tandem in a Mondeo hatch a couple times, wheels off vertically longways, forks dropped behind front seats. That was an older mk2 tho. But don’t discount large hatches.

Also I bought a 14yo BMW for 4k, needed some money spending on it but we budgeted for it, and with a decent indy didn’t find it catastrophically expensive. That was a a z4 tho, more likely to be owned by people that like cars and care for them. So maybe a nicer big old estate may have been better cared for than a newer “appliance” vehicle. No one that loves their cars is buying a Dacia…

Best question imo is “do you have any concerns about me” and second is “anything you wanted me to cover in the interview which I didn’t or go over again?”

    This.

But if you want another suggestion, “What made the previous person successful in the role?”

Less relevant if you already work there, but asking for examples of some unwritten rules is always good.

If you open a web browser, go to http://www.gmail.com and log in – are there emails?

You might need to change to view “all emails” not just “unread” on the left somewhere.

For me its all about justification. Its not enough to say “I was hoping for more” You need to justify why you are worth more.

    This.

You need to give the person you’re asking a reason to say yes, or persuade others. They might not even care what the reason is, but for most people or orgs there’ll need to be one.

Would really like the Cupra but FR Sport 190bhp is looking more likely due to being about £5k cheaper.

I went through the same process and got the FR ST. Ended up getting Seat to take it back, but that was an issue with my local dealer (Bristol) more than the car. The car was lovely except for the issues. The 190 feels nippy rather than “fast”, but it’s a nice drive. I also test drove a golf GTD estate – the Seat was nicer.

That all said, once Seat took the car back I got a 5 series touring…

If anyone has access to PC VR kit, I love exploring with google maps VR. Just feels so natural striding about the landscape like a giant, peering down at stuff for more details. Discovered loads of interesting little details to then look out for on lockdown walks locally.

I am tempted to go full Arthur Dent tomorrow.

This thread ended on such a cliff hanger…

Is the OP now down the pub? Off round the galaxy with their towel ? Or just waiting for their bins to be collected…

Wheelbuilding is satisfying but you have to work for that.

Yeah, the OP said quick jobs which is why I restricted it to just the lacing. That’s pretty quick and you go from pile of bits to “wheel”.

Lacing a wheel. Satisfying and therapeutic.

Am I being overly paranoid and protective

Of course you’re being paranoid and protective, you’re his dad! I think it’s normal to be worried, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t let him go, just means you should think about it. Which you are.

I think let him go. Just have a chat before about what to do if he gets lost or feels unsafe. FWIW google maps works fine in Japan, practice some map reading/navigating with him? Got a year or so to get some confidence up (for him and you).

My BiL organises trips abroad, but the other way round. He takes Japanese kids to the UK and US. Their parents should probably be more worried…

A few folk here getting their MBps and Mbps confused.

If you have 1Gbps (1 gigabit, small b) then that’s 1000Mbit (1024 megabits) which divides by 8 to give you 1024/8 = 128Megabytes per second. That’s theoretical max, as a rough guide divide by 10 – so 1 gigabit gets you 100megabyte a second. Which would be 13 minutes ish, not 65 seconds ish.

Of course if you’re on wifi, that’s probably a bottleneck on a 1gig connection.

    IA

So how long would your connection need for a 76 GB download? Go ahead, make my day!

    About 13 minutes.

I bring this up as NVMe ssds are very common in laptops but m.2 caddies are normally sata (tho NVMe ones have recently become available).

    IA
    Full Member

Hold on here – you say m.2 but SATA or NVMe?

What have you bought and what does the laptop use? If they’re not the same you’re in for some trouble…

Also are they both the same length? Some laptops require the shorter ones.

should act the same way as a regular SATA SSD.

True if you have a m.2 sata drive but NVMe ones are (more) common too and are directly on the PCIe bus with no sata controller.

Posture, regular movement, not staying in one position too long.

Also a non-obvious tip, be sure to work on stretches on all the large muscles that aren’t directly involved, as they’ll be taking up the slack a bit when there’s pain, getting tighter and contributing.

No magic fix though. Back pain for nearly 17 years here, and I’m not even 40…

Yeah, the effort is all about the damper not the spring leg. The only “extra” bit in an air fork is an o-ring or two, but then you don’t have a spring to grease/be in the way etc, and you can more easily cycle the forks if needed cos the spring (air) isn’t there until you want it to be.

The DIMMs I have spare are regular height, tho with heat spreaders. Happy to send them for you to try, if they don’t fit just hold onto them or pass them on. They’re 1600Mhz ddr3.

    IA
    Full Member

To added to the “cycle slowly” advice, the problem with riding when smartly dressed is not the riding, it’s when you stop. Your body is hot from riding (even if slow) and you hop of the bike and suddenly no airflow to cool you down so you start sweating.

To stop this, when you’re close/arrive, cruise a couple laps of the carpark or whatever barely pedalling if at all. You want to be completely cooled down by the time you stop, so you don’t heat up as soon as you do.

If it’s DDR3 dimms, full size not so-dimms – which looks to be the case – I have a pair of 4gb DDR3 dimms sat here doing nothing.

So if you want another 8Gb for nowt pm me an address and I’ll send you them next time I’m near a post office. Someone on here once sent me a CPU for free, so happy to pass on the good karma! Can’t promise speedy delivery mind.

You can make the shaft clamp you need by drilling then splitting a block of wood, using sime self amalgamating tape or bit of inner tube and clamping the lot in a vice. I did that, and it works fine – though I then bought some shaft clamps as it’s easier.

I don’t think there are any tools you _need_ they just make it easier.
