The 3.1 leaves most of the mounting gubbins on the rack which means when carrying the bag you don’t have sticky out bits digging into you making them nicer to carry. Useful for city type bags.

This. The above about compatible rack isn’t quite right – you get a frame (with the bag) you mount if you have a generic mount.

Some ancient/vintage (~20yo) alu numbers on 760 wide flat bar on my singlespeed – I am tall/long arms/wide shoulders though.

Ace for getting my gurn on ups steep stuff. Miss them on other bikes on long rides.

A mate had a go on them, and with the width remarked ” i feel like i’m carrying a big TV”.

    I’ve got the original X100.

Ace camera, particularly in low or challenging/interesting light – mainly as you have all the controls readily accessible on dials. Not a great point and shoot tho, takes efffort to work well. I like it for action as the viewfinder means you see people about to enter the frame.

Jpegs from it are ace, especially the skin tones.

Dist-upgrade will move you to a new version (eg, 14.04 to 16.04). Upgrade will not. No?

    Nope.

“upgrade” will only ever update in place packages. New packages won’t be added/installed, and old ones won’t be deleted (other than those updated).

So say a new version of something requires a new library – “upgrade” won’t update it. It’ll stay “held back”. This can cause problems long term of course.

This distinction is nearly gone on modern systems with apt instead of apt-get. Presumably as folk get it wrong.

Any advice would be well received if you’re feeling that way inclined

Disable any intel GPU switching in the bios, just use the nvidia card. Install the drivers from the ubuntu repos (synaptic or apt). If you have issues still, nearly always cos you’ve done something to bork the kernel module or stop it auto rebuilding for a new kernel. So reinstall them to force it, and pay attention to the output.

    wifi and graphics issues.

Stick with intel and nvidia (or intel for both). I don’t care if others are “supported”, intel is the only way to go in network adapters.

Broken gfx on upgrade nearly always the issue above. Or a not properly updated system prior to upgrade ( pop quiz, difference between apt-get upgrade and dist-upgrade?).

It probably doesn’t affect the majority of users,

I dunno, any major version update, for any os, may hose stuff you do. If you depend on a computer working, you check out new OS and that they work correctly before moving to them. If it doesn’t matter, you just upgrade then deal with the mess – you pay your money etc..

Typically when there’s a new LTS we don’t jump on it. We test in a VM, test builds etc. Then move one or two persons to it for their main machine, give them normally until at least the .1 release to shake out any issues, and then move everyone. Even then, we don’t tend to upgrade in the middle of projects.

    graphics card drivers (esp. Nvidia)

Nvidia are very well supported (or is that what you mean?) – so we only use nvidia machines.

I’m interested as to what issue folks have with ubuntu? I know (with any linux) there’s poorly supported hardware issues, but for work use they’re easily avoided. The big advantage ubuntu has is wide software support – whatever you want to use will likely be available, and supported, on ubuntu.

Ubuntu at work for years across many machines, and colleagues.

It’s fine, just stick to the LTS versions (so 16.04 now).

No problems with virtual box, or anything really. Obviously we buy well supported machines for Linux.

, that I can move my mobile number to

You can move your number wherever you want, within 24hrs. It’s law. Call them up, ask for your PAC, you don’t have to use it and they last a few weeks. Shop around.

People wondering how folk use data – I do about 4-6gb a month. As above, streaming music at work, watching the odd video, OTA updates and podcast downloads. I only have wifi at home.

I’m 90kg, they’re doing ok for me on the back of my XC bouncy bike and the front of my 160mm 29er enduro bike.

So I’d say yup, go for them.

If you’re not familiar – the cam action and parallel smooth jaws is what makes them a winner.

I’ve found a pair of knippex pliers wrench, used correctly so as you apply pressure they grip tighter, to be excellent for reverb disassembly as they give a good tight grip on flats. Not for this particular job mind, mostly got mine for the shallow 23mm (IIRC) at the bottom of the inner.

we thought we’d try washing the covers in the washing machine at home and they came out fantastically

By way of balance…also did this. Came out clean, but didn’t fit back on right…. zip at the back didn’t do up properly but could kinda hide it…

As above, a couple % shrink is the issue

    I’m 90kg and run 29er arch mk3.

Plenty stiff, sure 26s will be fine. More of a function of the wheel build quality than the rim.

I’d not touch crests with someone elses, even on my XC bike I’ve got an arch out back.

Where are they? Even buying new there aren’t many. Most companies don’t even make bikes big enough, which makes sense. Why? …

I’m 6’4″, so me and people taller are < 1% of the population. Why would you make frames you can only sell to < 1%? Not much profit in it. Now, they’ll fit people a little smaller too, but still a small niche.

Even those that do make them, don’t always bring them in to the UK. E.g. when I last looked XXL spesh didn’t come into the uk, only the (small) XL sizes.

I’ve always wondered how small a persons frame must be if they can run a 170mm dropper.

My frame’s enormous, but you should see the length of my legs ;-)

    I guess I should say I also have a XL, 6’4″.

I don’t use it for “regular” riding though, I have a singlespeed hardtail for local stuff in the woods, and a 100mm XC full sus for spanking it.

“regular” could mean so much though, depending on where it is, your fitness, experience and riding style. I’m reasonably fit, and when I take it to a trail centre I find I’m passing lots of folk on climbs etc. yet it feels slow to me and there’s no way I’d take it to an XC race or long distance event.

Changed the front end to a boost/arch mk3 on lyriks, I’m big and this is a bike for ragging, I wanted more up front, wider to support the tyre.

Still got the sram rear on as I figure I may as well run it till I kill it, it seems surprisingly resilient though. It does sound like I’m being chased by someone strumming a banjo when firing through harsh compressions/berms mind.

What issues? Mine’s only a month or so old but enjoying it so far.

Roam wheels a bit flexy but I swapped the front. I’ve also got lyriks on instead of pikes.

    You want a day bed:

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/beds/guest-beds-day-beds/

It’s a proper bed and a poor sofa, but that’s actually a handy way round for a spare room. Slept on ours for 6 months renovating the house, was fine as you can use decent mattresses.

    EDIT: hemnes as above

So here’s the thing – you said it yourself – it doesn’t matter how fast you ride.

So the bike really doesn’t matter that much, so long as it fits and does the rides you want. Presumably all your options will.

So buy the one you fancy, as there’s fun in having a new bike, that makes you want to ride it. And the reason could just be a nice colour, or you like the idea of it etc etc… it’s all just riding a big circle and ending up back where you started after all. do it on a bike that makes you smile.

Hub coaster brake? Then you just need to make the drivetrain work…

    IA

Ok, old case – do you have space up the front of it? Often a good spot there. Side panel is in the way of GPU unless you’ve a massive case….but if you did you’d have space and not be asking.

THe floor of the case can work too if you cut/drill intakes, but then you’re pulling the CPU air INTO the case which you need to exhaust somehow. Not idea but no worse than an air cooler.

    What’s the case you’ve got?

    IA

New case. Got a nice fractal one here with a 240 rad in:
    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/fractal-design-define-xl-r2-black-pearl-full-tower-performance-xl-atx-case-with-usb-30-w-o-psu

I can recommend it as being ace, if a bit mahooosive, though I needed to fit a bunch of stuff.

(water as it’s cooling a hot xeon that gets kept at full load for weeks on end and is in an office so needs to be quiet)

Cracked/snapped frames ride like that…have a close look at it.

Is the rear axle bent, or snapped? Pull the hub apart, or try with a different rear wheel. They can snap and still “work”

Of course you have to secure the google account you use on it, two factor authentication etc, but other than that?
