    @winston

    Not PED O ?

    :D

    Melissa Kite (a journalist who writes for the Mail and Spectator) is another one pushing for this with her inflammatory anti-cycling articles. An absolute **** of a woman.

    These seem like the most ridiculous indulgences, especially on this forum where people tend to favour sustainability and other progressive causes.

    @tjagain

    I’m just summarising what I’ve read in this thread.

    The truth is that distance running is a house of cards when it comes to PEDs and it just hasn’t had it’s Lance Armstrong moment

    The interesting thing about the Lance fanboys in the 00s was that they could acknowledge the rampant use of PEDs (and blood doping) in cycling but someone Lance was a special case. Any number of absurd rationalisation would be invented to explain how Lance could beat the dopers on nothing but orange juice.

    I’m not sure it makes much sense to treat menopause as an illness.

    50% of the population experience it as part of a natural process.

    @molgrips

    I think anyone with common sense ‘knew’ that but technically or formally speaking the Windrush victims couldn’t ‘prove’ anything because their landing cards had been destroyed.

    The Tories are desperately short of quality candidates, the problem is that Labour is even more lacking.

    @inkster

    Only stereotypical gammons (which are rare) are anti-immigration full stop. An open border is idealistic nonsense from people who bear no responsibility for the consequences. There is nothing wrong with limited immigration according to an immigration policy (which means border control).

    @molgrips

    The situations aren’t the same. Mo has documented citizenship, the Windrush victims had no paperwork at all.

    More or less uniformly miserable experiences IMHO.

    Fresh out of University I had an interview with this firm in Chesire. In fact, I had two interviews with them. Unfortunately, they rejected me and wouldn’t even pay for my train fare when I asked them to citing a policy about only paying travel costs for those in full-time education. Absolute ****!

    Proof that e-bikes are more like motorbikes than ‘proper’ bicycles?

    @argee – have you any idea how many poor people live in the third world and how rapidly their populations are growing? Nigeria alone, for example, will have about 400 million by 2050.

    i_scoff_cake

    Countries would balance out – badly governed countries would empty out, well governed countries would have higher populations etc,.

    How is the UK going to find homes, infrastructure and jobs to absorb the potentially almost infinite number of people who could come here? Can you imagine the chaos? How is the government supposed to ever plan ahead?

    What you neglect to say is that well-governed countries would fill up until they become as uninhabitable as the third-world countries people are escaping from. Do you want that?

    I painted this, call “Borderline Madness” to show the stupidity of artificial borders drawn across a single entity purely for the sake of borders.

    Borders are no more ‘artificial’ than laws against murder or the existence of money. Consider that they can be no true freedom without the laws that flow from a political community. There would only be chaos and anarchy instead. Without states how could we have political communities able to establish laws? With total freedom of movement these states would be more like hostels filled with transients. What are the consequences for the political community?

    @kelvin – Yes, that’s why he’s played it out this way; it still gives him hope. There’s no other reason to trade dignity to remain as a lame-duck like this. Odds are probably against him I agree, but tomorrow is a new day in politics. This strategy is entirely befitting his narcissistic personality; he thinks he’s Churchill and this could be his ‘Churchillian moment’.

    @klevin

    Trying to generalise from a particular is just bad logic. In fact, it’s just propaganda in this instance.

    The need for immigration control does not hinge on prejudice against people wanting to migrate here.

    I have no doubt that Boris will be looking to throw his hat into the ring if he can surreptitiously gather enough support.

    @convert

    Preconceptions? Like we should let anyone from around the world freely move here?

    That’s a terrible idea even if some of these immigrants get knighthoods.

    If in doubt wear a suit but that also begs the question of what kind of suit!

    However, I’ve never had a successful formal interview and consequently, I’ve never been successful in an interview wearing a suit!

    Currency a decision to be made by the first post independence government.

    So in other words, independence means independence?

    Johnson staying on is a real low for this country.

    He’s manifestly angling to still defeat his party opponents and remain as their leader.

    He’s scheming to the end; putting himself above the needs of the country.

    Worst case scenario is he does loads of damage.

    A friend of mine seriously tore a hamstring doing this back in the day.

    Anyone know the load rating/yield strength of new chains? I’m assuming that 11/12 are weaker than the thicker chains?

    I certainly pay attention to replacing my chain regularly, but having said that I’m way less strong than I was back in my 20s.

    A big guy at work managed to strip the teeth off a chainring on a cheap Chinese bike doing same too.

    All that fiscal stuff is based on the petroleum all ‘belonging’ to Scotland.

    That’s all in the past.

    London is the engine of the UK economy. It’s very hard to believe that Scotland is now a net contributor to the Treasury.

    Stretching my historical knowledge a fair bit.

    Ireland became an independent nation 100 years ago after hundreds of years in the UK

    Finland similarly iirc. Gained independence 100 odd years ago after hundreds of years of bing a part of other countries

    Scotland and Ireland have very different histories. Scotland was never colonised per se and today all Scottish people get the same vote as anyone else in the UK. IIRC Ireland had very limited representation in Parliament, especially for the Catholics, and it wasn’t even until the 20th century that everyone in the UK got to vote.

    And what does that have to do with Scotland

    Because it shows that being upset about Brexit isn’t a thing reserved for people in Scotland.

    We have been dragged out of the EU against strongly held wish

    The same could be said for all remain voting constituencies in the UK.

    Some of these ScotNats think that everyone just votes according to some mythical ‘national will’ in order to shaft every other nation in the UK.

    Yes, this has worked a trick for me in the past and I get terrible sea/motion sickness.

    I’ve never used it for more than 24 hrs though. Not sure what the medical advice is for that.

    I heard they also stole marketing ideas from people they interviewed for marketing jobs.

    Their CEO seems like a total asshole.

    Always the same kind of people who are greedy to show how virtuous they are on other matters.

    The man really has no shame at all.

    He’s staying on as PM only because it still gives him a sliver of a chance to win the party back over.

    To my mind, it’s clearly an abuse of the Royal Prerogative if Boris calls a GE now, and it further highlights what a bad idea repealing the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act was.

    A GE doesn’t serve the national interest in any way. Boris is just desperate to hold onto power for his own sake and will cause sheer chaos to do so.

    Well, the devil’s in the detail with supposed carbon savings, especially of down-cycled materials.

    It’s more like an accounting-trick than anything else.

    Are we supposed to believe the alternative was buying new tyres just to shred them?

    I’ve no idea how long it lasts. What would worry me are local yobs lighting fires on it.
