Hmmm – you’d probably chose an old land rover, a really old Saab, a Karman Ghia, Citroen DS, or some such.
Most cars with precision and quality also lack charisma.

This, but including Citroen GS or CX, Volvo P1800, Audi A6 Allroad and very old BMW 3 series tourings. Although if my office is anything to go by it’s range rover sports and porsches these days.

I on the other hand stick to stereotypes and have a mid 90s Saab 900 convertible. It’s great, when it works.

I’m 5’9” and last year I went from 85kg to 60kg in about 10 months by using an almost OCD like zeal for calorie counting and portion control, who knew you could have lunch for less than 150 calories, I spent the entire time being hungry but eventually realised that although 28” waist jeans are nice, the obsession was probably not very healthy and stopped before it got properly out of hand.

Happily sitting around 63kg now and significantly faster on the bike because of it.

My old soul had a tiny dribble of paint in the dropout. Couple of seconds with a file and everything was fine.

Can’t quite make out who makes that bike or those wheels. :-)

Anyhoo, here’s my effort. Purple bars went on shortly after this photo.

I’m just surprised that the limp mode stops when you drive 100m and restart the engine. I can leave it for 5+ hours in freezing weather too and it will start and run fine with all gears.

I’m hoping not to get properly sucked into spending massive piles of cash but it’s difficult as it’s an awful lot of fun.

Cheers AD, both a little far from me unfortunately.

B R, almost certainly, but I’m a sucker for spending far too much on awful cars.

you bought an automatic convertible? Are you American AND a hairdresser?

Hangs head in shame. I won’t even bother trying to defend myself.

Might be time to get it looked at instead of just leaving it parked up assuming it’s broken.

Cast of Thousands by Elbow and Primary Colours by The Horrors.

    My ‘go to’ travelling albums.

Anything shoegazey like Ride, Chapterhouse or My Bloody Valentine works well too. There’s a Rob da Bank history of shoegaze album that makes a very good introduction to the genre.

I own an old Saab (not an architect but i do design buildings) and the AA have been fine on the numerous occasions I’ve used them.

On a happier note it passed it’s MOT today. WHOOOOP.

Ps. Saab doctor in Ealing is good for parts and service.

Ok so I’ve found a Rotel ra-921 amp, i’ve read some reviews and it appears to be a budget amp but ok the bonus being it’s cheap and close. Will this bad boy work with a Rega planar 2/3 without having to add any other gubbins (other than speakers)?

I wish I still had my huge shiny mid 70’s technics system. Life would have been so much easier.

    Cheers all

Rega planars look good, fairly plentiful on eBay and pretty cheap.

I have some small speakers hidden away somewhere which will do for now so that just leaves an amp. Nad or rotal according to the very helpful lovegoinguphills. Any specific models to look out for?

It doesn’t have to be the finest quality and secondhand would be fine, I won’t be listening at ear bleeding levels or expecting perfect perforamance. Just something to start with that isn’t utter crap [shallow]and if possible looks pretty[/shallow].

Cheaper the better but if there’s a minimum amount to spend to get something half decent then so be it.

Sweet, cheers all. I’ll try it out tomorrow, the jump thingy I have won’t work unless there’s at least 1.5v in the battery and as it wouldn’t even unlock the car I’m assuming that I’ll need to charge the battery first. I’ll try it before buying a charger though, just in case.

Now all I need is to get through 800 miles of Christmas driving with an erratic gearbox.

Nearly a month off for me now. 2 failures, one was a boozy night in the pub and the other was a 3 day office christmas party bender. 5 packs that weekend

Not going too badly now, although without the patches I become quite crotchety.

    Keep up the awesome people.

Manchester is a little far for me for a Thursday evening , I might be able to make a Nanty trip though if I can combine it with a trip to see my parents.

As an aside: Oooh. Day 4 is a toughie. Off to go to the pub for lunch now too, this is going to be hard work.

I’m wondering how many people on here genuinely ‘want’ to give up. Putting aside the physical addiction side of things, it seems that many folk actually enjoyed smoking, yet are giving up cios it’s bads for their health. Good reason enough.

The only times I’ve ever given up for any length of time have been when I’ve just really not wanted to do it anymore, the cost and health benefits are nice but unimportant.

But how many others have considered just cutting down, to say my level of smoking, or feeling that it’s ok for them to have the odd ciggie now and then? Does it have to be complete abstinence?

I can’t just have one, I’m either a smoker or a non-smoker. If I have one the chances are I’ll be back to full smoking within a few weeks. :(

Day 2 in the Huw not smoking house, not going too badly, full to the brim with coffee, satsumas (2 for one in waitrose) and hate but no one’s dead yet. Although last night after being told there were going to be a bunch of redundancies at work my studio nearly looked like Francisco de Goya’s Great Deeds Against the Dead. Didn’t smoke though. :-)

Fenred, I feel your pain, I once went 2 weeks without a poo due to the side effect of some serious pain killers, not something I’d like to repeat again.

fenred, 16 hour patches. I keep finding myself absent mindedly rubbing the patch trying to squeeze more delicious nicotine out of it.

The very act of cutting some cheese had managed to work me up into an apoplectic frenzy

This doesn’t bode well for the barrage of stupid questions I’m likely to get at work this afternoon

Elf, not overly (about 10 a day) but for the last 20 years, with a 2 year hiatus when I thought I’d actually kicked it. Unfortunately I fell off my bike and spent 2 weeks at home full to the brim with tramadol with no one to talk to but the man in the newsagents and my neighbours cats.

    Can I play?
Decided last night that I’d had enough and I’m now 18 hours in and feeling very twitchy, although this could have something to do with the 3 double espressos I’ve had this morning. I’ve not snapped at anyone yet either but the day is still young.

Yep totally wasted, sofa and newspaper all day.
It would appear that guzzling damson vodka into the wee small hours is not compatible with getting up early to go out on a bike.

1 or 2 lamb shoulders pot roasted at a low temp for 5 hours with chunky wintery veg, strip it off the bone and shred it into the same tin with the ‘gravy’. Serve with another big dish of dauphinoise or boulangerie potatoes.

Just been sat on my back step watching the neighbours (backing onto our garden) firing off some fairly minor rockets for the kids to squel at and then listening to the spent rockets crash down around me. 8O
