    Dear god no!

Nothing good has ever come from throwing slightly different coloured anodised bits at a bike.

we’ve budgeted a grand a month for 1 bedroom place

Oh. That rules out most of SW London. After looking last year we found that Barnes to Twickenham were £1200 upwards for a one bed (Victorian/Edwardian conversion). From putney to Clapham seemed to be considerably more expensive.

Barnes is definitely the nicest bit along that line though.

Actually I’ve changed my mind, live in Clapham. It’ll be cripplingly expensive but great fun.

Mountain biking from London without a car is a pain, but it can be done. Make sure you have an easy link to Clapham junction and from there you have access to Swinley and Dorking. Richmond park, Wimbledon common and the Thames path can be linked up to create 20-30 km with hardly any road, it’s more suited to CX but can be fun for a morning/evening blast though. Richmond park at night is especially fun.

In terms of where to live, there are a couple of trainlines that run from Clapham Junction to London Bridge via some acceptable and not too expensive parts of south London (streatham, crystal palace, dulwich, forest hill) these will give you access to the surrey hills for road biking, Herne Hill velodrome and CJ for MTB. Most importantly you’ll be able to get the train home drunk from east and west London.

Lets not have another Dome fiasco eh..

Has that not worked out quite well (since the government stopped being involved)?

6 weeks in for me and this time it seems to be much easier than some of my previous attempts. The trigger was getting half way through a cigarette and having an epiphany that I didn’t want to do it anymore, stubbed it out and not had one since. The patches help considerably.

Never forget, your brain is (well should be) in charge of your body, not the other way round. Mind over matter.

Unfortunately the good stuff acts on the pleasure sensors in your brain. The primal parts of your brain want you to smoke.

£1000pcm in Clapham will get you sod all.

This. As we found out last year when we were looking, it’s unlikely you’ll get anything from Clapham to way past Richmond for under £1000.

Streatham hill to crystal palace should be a goer though.

This thread is like a trip down memory lane, I lived in Padworth for 25 years.

Unfortunately I left 10 years ago so I doubt I can be much help. Good luck with the search, it’s a lovely place to grow up.

Cheers Kilo, upon further investigation the Monday night sessions look perfect? It would appear they’re now doing a C group for fun/novice racing on Wednesdays too, I might well give racing a go a bit later in the season.

    where are you racing?

Wouldn’t go so far as to say that I’ll be racing, not yet anyway, but I’ll be wheezing through as many sessions as it’s possible to squeeze in at Herne Hill.

Unfortunately bling is not really on my radar at the moment. A combination of saving a deposit for a house and a girlfriend imposed 3 bike limit means I’m looking at a Dolan Pre Cursa frame and forks with the parts dragged over from my slightly knackered Langster. It also has to be (with the addition of a brake) my commuter, road bike and transport to the track.

Nice to look at other peoples bikes and dream though.

    That’s quite glitzy.

    Dolan Seta?

14 bike co will make a ‘custom’ track/fixed frame and forks in the UK with plenty of options from £450 up.

I need an aero tubed, filet brazed 853 14r lo pro.

hmmmm, velodrome shop appears to agree with you. damn, possibly time to rethink my wheels and gearing for spring.

Depending on tyre sizes the approximate GI for each setup using the sprockets you have is 49/15 = 85GI and 49/14 = 91GI. All within the realms of normality for the track. 50/15 = 87GI which isn’t so different from what you already have.

I think (and I’m remembering from a long time ago so I may be wrong) one extra/less tooth moves the wheel position 4mm.

Personally I’d keep the 15 and the 14 on a flip flop hub for different race types.

If you’re riding on the road and encounter hills then that gearing massive and you are a riding god.

Only ever heard good things about Armourtex.

Great thread here (LFGSS) with gallery and probably links and reviews of other London based powdercoaters.

Pretend architect specialising in all the technical and specific space planing requirements for stadiums and arenas.
3 A levels in art based subjects, foundation course in art, degree in furniture and related product design followed by a year or so of working in pubs and driving vans before getting lucky and getting in to architecture as a cad monkey. Few lucky breaks later and landed a job designing the seating bowl for the O2. Now spend my life doing the early stage stuff on competitions and feasibility studies for major stadium projects.

The girlfriend has vetoed any extra bikes so the current commuter is going as I need to build a Track bike, Commuter, TT bike, road bike and fixed CX bike in one, all built around a Dolan Pre Cursa frame and a selection of different forks, wheels, bars and gear ratios.
Going to be a bit of jack of all trades master of none but as long as it’s relatively cheap, works well on the track and isn’t too uncomfortable on the road I’ll be happy.

I’m a big fan of Microstation, simple and easy to use for 2D and 3D, and when used properly up there with 3D studio max for rendering. Compatible with Autocad, and doesn’t change file formats at all so forward and backwards compatible with itself. But the future, for big projects at least, is Revit and thankfully my training starts in the new year. Knowing how to use it is a big plus too when looking for work at the large London practices.

All the ‘kids’ we employ come to us only able to use Rhino, it’s great for modelling complicated shapes for unbuildable student projects, but frankly rubbish for anything you’d ever want to build.

Microstation and Photoshop should be all you really need to produce everything from jazzy visuals to construction info.

trendy London-types wearing something like those Bananas, but really tight in the leg

[embarrassing admission] I have some skinny, carrot cut, track pants (super tight on the lower leg and baggy round the crotch) which I wear with Ugg boots. Most comfortable ‘indoors only’ combo ever. I get changed when I take the bins out though as I’m fully aware I look like a ****. [/embarrassing admission]

a lot less noisy than a wind resistance turbo. Alu drums and smooth tyres make them quieter as well.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ve ever heard a wind resistance turbo. How loud (above normal) would I have to have radio 4 to be able to hear gardeners question time.

Does anyone have a rough idea how noisy rollers are or have recommendations for quiet ones? I’d be using it in the kitchen of a ground floor Victorian flat so vibration shouldn’t be a problem for the neighbours but I like them so I don’t want to piss them off too much with general noise.

Fixed gear road bike with conti gator skins if that makes a difference.

I used Halo twin rail road tyres in a similar situation. 2 years or so of london roads, fixed gear mad skidz and Thames path on one set without any trouble at all, not even a puncture. I even managed an offroad Strava KOM.

I like the idea of architecture however maths isn’t my forte and I didn’t continue with it at A level so that is probably out!

Don’t rule it out just because you didn’t choose maths. I’ll check with my work mates but I don’t think all of them did maths a level. I’ve been doing it quite succesfully for 13 years and although i got into it a rather convoluted and very lucky way I did a levels in Art, Design, and History of Art. It’s also much easier to get into than most other design disciplines once you’ve done your degree, most people who stick it through their part 2 will end up working in architecture in some way or other. Don’t expect to get rich though.

I’ll second doing an art/design foundation course. Really focused my mind as to what I wanted to do a degree in, unfortunately although I loved my furniture and product design degree the chances of me getting a job in that field were very slim. Luckily after a couple of years of bumbling along I stumbled into architecture and enjoy it immensely.

As those above have said, if you need any advice feel free to get in touch.
