For the first time ever the Skills course I was coaching this weekend had 2 26″, 2 650B and 1 29er – the full mix! There’s usually a mix of 29ers and 26, but this was the first time I’ve seen 650B’s out in the wild.

That was fun, even with your alarm going off at 06:00!

Yes it was me @rewski, although I’m on here under my “original” identity

Pivot Mach 5.7 or the new Mach 6 if you feel the need for 650b!

As Rewski says the Sync is a really fast, responsive ride. The beefy chainstays make sure none of your effort is wasted in flex. But the seatstays aren’t such a big size, so there is an element of that Ti feel in there. I came from the FF29 aluminium version, which I loved, but found on a long day out was a bit harsh for my dodgy back. I’ve had Ti frames since ’94 and love the feel of them. If I’m honest the FF29 was only shed sitting till the Sync came out. I’m really happy with the ride of it :-)

Old one, had it 14 years, selling was a mistake:

    One 3 x 9 and two 3 x 10’s here, I don’t actually care about simplifying my drivetrain, I like a triple :-)

The chap in the yellow T shirt at the top of the climb who was dishing out the “motivational heckles” definitely deserves a thumbs up, very creative, I can’t remember it fully, but his one about “tasting the suffering” was very apt at about five o clock! Good work.

And again, many thanks to those who go to all the effort to put this on for us :-)

And if you were one of the “RIDER” shouting muppets, try saying which side you want to go….. The fastest guys are the most considerate and polite overtakers, a few of the wannabes in the pack behind were less so!

I use a triple and 11-36, just gives me a good bail out gear if I’m doing a 12 hour race or am just plain knackered! I like have a triple though as we have some long descents here.

Just done a skills course there this morning in the rain, it’s really slippery and a few puddles too. Hopefully it’ll get a chance to dry out…..

That’ll be the problem then, set aside in my head is not exchangeable in the real world!! Got a pile of bits and the FF29 frame to sell so you never know, I might scrape it together yet…..

I need to twist Dom’s arm for the demo one, they are only just “down the road” from me. The only trouble is of course I may like it too much. I have a perfectly useable Kinesis FiveT, but I just love the feel of Ti frames and I think a cross bike with discs would be a perfect compliment for the others ;-)

@b r – yes I reckon the two would go well together, as I said earlier I have a Cove Hummer so a similar kind of thing to your 456Ti, just beware or you may end up with the same dilemma as me and you might end up ignoring your original bike…..

Yeah it’s the 29er medium size, I had the FF29 aluminium version before which I loved, but I was lucky enough to use the prototype Sync last year for the Twentyfour12. I fell in love with it and basically had the FF29 till the production ones turned up.

It’s a slightly different beast to the FF29, it’s slacker, shorter out the back and a lot more comfortable to ride. I’ve just done 12 hour mixed pairs on it at the Bonty this weekend and I reckon I know it pretty well now.

The only trouble is I also have a Cove Hummer and I can’t really see that I’ll ride that much now, the Sync really is perfect for me. It handles all the tight twisty stuff fine and doesn’t seem to mind being thrown down stuff like a loony, which is just as well because it wants you to ride it like that!

I had a Kona Hei hei for 14 years, which I loved and bitterly regret selling

2008_0506_183833AA by South Downs MTB Skills, on Flickr

I eventually replaced it with a Cove Hummer, which I still have (and love!)

Cove Hummer by South Downs MTB Skills, on Flickr

And I’ve just got a kinesis sync, which I think may have made the Hummer a bit redundant, but I’m not going to sell it as I don’t want a repeat performance with the regret of the Hei hei!

Green grips gone now and front mech changed for a top mounted ‘old style’ one for better mud clearance (not that we’ll hopefully need that for a while!).
