That magnificent burger was from a van near the Cardiff football stadium. It had half a pound of beef, double bacon and cheese, mushrooms, and 2 eggs.
It cost 3 quid. I didn’t have butter cause I think its fattening.
I will be going back there tomorrow but I might leave it till after the ride this time.

I ate this for breakfast this morning. It was really nice going down but not so nice when it came up. This occurred whilst I was climbing a steep hill. It was very smelly after that.

I wouldn’t worry about not using all your travel personally. If you over sag your shock it will climb terribly.
I’d set your sag at 30% and ride it like that. After a few rides it will bed in and your sag will increase. You’ll need to put more air in to get it back to 30%.

What shock are you using? RP23 or DHX air?

    Hi,
Trying to make an early morning ride that is probably beyond my organisational abilities.
Do you have a start time and address?
    A postcode will do.

hahaha! Makes me think of what goes through my head when I attempt a new North Shore. Its usually “Whats the worst thing that could happen?”
If this child wasn’t 30 kgs and made of rubber that could be quite serious.
Good that he’ll learn these skills now then at our age, Wish I did!!

PS if you still have that 6.6 hanging on the wall in your garage/shed/wherever it’s kept at Hugor Towers, can I have it?

Hugor Towers is in Australia. I’m working here for a few years. I love this place. It is such a mountain biking mecca compared to Aus. I didn’t bring my faulty bike frame with me. It wasn’t high on my priorities!!

Look when I research a potential new bike I read the reviews.
Unfortunately most of those have nothing but praise for the bikes they are reporting on.
Not really much of an independant opinion is to be found on official websites or mags.
So then the next place to look at is unbiased consumer reviews which is places like this.
If I see a thread asking whether somebody should buy brand X or Y isn’t it fair to say X based on your personal experience with the company?

I’ve ridden them both, and VPP wins out for me on trails.

Fair enough. You like VPP and your entitled to your opinion.
It rides really well. I’m not pushing DWL, Pivot or Turner here.
All I’m saying is that there’s loads of great bikes on the market so why deal with a company that has QC issues.
Like everything else every company has problems but some much more than others. I am not the first or last to have this issue with this particular company. If you go back to page 1 lots of others have too.

Oh dear, Hugor’s off on one again.

    No I didn’t elaborate. I don’t need to.
The only reason you recognise me is because the last post we were involved with was about a guy who’s Tracer VP had broken for the 3rd time.
Still sounds like a QC issue to me!!

Is that saddle called the Gonzo? (Muppets)

Its a Selle SMP. Looks odd but is damn comfortable and stops my privates going numb on long rides.

thanks Hugor confirms my oh should of waited feeling and the still not sure on DW suspension….in that it does take tme to set up and that there iss a difference between brands.

How tall are you. I’m 6 foot even and ride a large. Its perfect for me.
Its not particularly hard but you will need a few hours on the trail with your fox pump in your pack to get it right.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have trouble.
In the end I had to actually read the instruction manual!
Most of my issues were related to the DHX AIR rather than the bike.

Pivot Firebird…….please tell how does it ride

    She is an unbelievable bike.
I honestly think DWL is the best sus design I’ve ridden.
The rear feels like a 1 or 2 inch travel machine when climbing but descending is unbelievable.
I must admit that its quite hard to get the suspension dialled at first but once you’ve got it sorted its fantastic.
I used to own an Intense.
Here it is. Notice the similarities!!

It rode fantastic but gave me nothing but trouble and there was no support from them.
Don’t want to go into details here suffice to say is that there’s way too many great bikes out there to be dealing with suspect brands.

come on get some piccies on here then.

How about some more DWL goodness but of a different kind.
Here’s my baby. I love her very much.
6 inches of travel but climbs like a race bike.

The first half to the top of Y Das is slow and painful. The rest is great IMO.

Cadair view lodges. Excellent accommodation and facilities. You can ride to CyB from there.

I’ve heard the gap descent has been dumbed down. That true?

Did it yesterday. The first part has been smoothened out with the rock steps. The rest is the same. Still great fun though.

The UK has such amazing trail centers. Coming from Australia where most mountain biking is illegal, underground and poor quality rather than the professionally designed trails you have here, I would love to pay a few dollars to ride what you guys take for granted in this country.

    Y Das?

You ever seen anybody ride that? Looks unrideable to me.

The best riding in Wales for me is not in the trail centres. I save them for winter when time is limited and weather is unreliable.
Llangorse mtn, Black mountains, the Gap amongst many others are much better rides IMO.

This one grounded me last week causing a 2 hour walk home. Before anyone suggests singlespeeding it, the bike is full sus so the chain kept slipping off whenever I went over any bump.

Why the accusations of trolling ?

Yeh I don’t get this place either.
Seems there’s loads of people just sitting around waiting to flame any response sometime.
OK. I carry a credit card to pay for a long taxi ride if I need to.
Cash to pay any random person with a vehicle who may drive me out of there. I’ve done this before.
Phone to be able to call a taxi, friend or mountain rescue if I have reception.
    How are these useless items?

I always carry lots of cash, my credit card and phone on remote rides.
I got stuck in the Black Mountains once in the dark with the missus and was reasonably lost with no lights.
Dropped into a farm house and gave the farmer a 50 in exchange for a lift in his ute with the bikes to Crickhowell which was about 10 miles away.
    Best 50 I’ve ever spent.

The other giveaway is the print on the tire.
If there’s only branding on one side then this usually goes on the drive (right) side. If there’s lots more on one side also then that usually holds true as well.

Looking at that pic of the kenda above, I would mount it on the front so that the bottom part of that pic was pointing forwards when looking from the top.

I’d love a fat bike. Don’t neeed one bbut they just look so much fun.
I’ve been eyeing out a Salsa Mukluk since they came out.
That pic is from Alice Springs which is in the centre.
There is an excellent 5 day race called the Red Centre Enduro that that pic came from.
You get all kinds of surfaces there.
Dry river beds with very soft deep sand, then you have hardpack with or without a few cms of wind blown sand over the top. Of course there’s the dry sharp rocky stuff at the tops of ranges.
Full respect for that pic of that race above. That looks like real hard work.
I used to use white lightning dry lube sparingly. Worked for me.

As far as I’m aware there’s a little bit in the New Forest and some on the Isle of Wight. I’ve not done any of it.
There are lots of MTB loops posted up in this area on gpsies.com.

Cheers, gonna look up that place. Might be good for a holiday. Never heard of it. You can’t go a year without a bike!!! It’s not a realistic consideration.

    I miss Oz!

Hey I’m loving the lush green you have here. Those varying shades of brown get tiring after a while.
Its the neighbours grass or trail arguement I guess. :-)

You don’t need fats. Sand just requires a few extra skills and some minor modifications.
As an Aussie we ride in sand all the time. I have issues with this mud and clay you guys ride in.
You need to convert to tubeless cause you need low pressures of the order of 20 – 25 psi. If you run tubes you will get regular pinch flats.
You want reasonably fat tires 2.3 or wider but you don’t need a fat bike.
I used to use Maxxis Ignitors front and Crossmarks rear.
You don’t need anything more aggressive than this.
    Hope this helps.

I rarely bottom out my forks but bottom out my rear 1-2 times per ride if I’m trail riding.
If the ride is not technical or rocky I won’t bottom out at all. I wouldn’t get hung up on that sentence.

Most pics of failed carbon frames I’ve seen including those in the link above show it failing in 2 places at once.
In this case we have a ring of a fork which is completed by the axle. A rigid ring cannot fail in one place. It has to fail in 2.

    Agree entirely with above.
But let’s not let a little knowledge get in the way of an argument.

    Wasn’t dissing anything.
My issue here is the mode of failure.
Bends and stress fractures give you some chance of saving the situation.
Catastrophic failure gives you no chance.

Ive noticed that you get a lot of mileage out of that pic. I guess it saves from trying to think and intelligently contribute to discussions. I guess we all have our limits and you keep well within yours.

    hugor

The only pics I’ve ever seen on failed steel or alloy frames are either bends or stress fractures. we’ve all seen endless examples of this catastrophic carbon failure. Who cares about warranties, this stuff permanently disables people.
