Nichetastic! Wouldn’t drink from that water bottle though.

Rumours was my favourite and still gets a regular listen these days.
I quite like Stevie Nicks solo albums as well.

I stayed at the Fowey hotel in Fowey (spoken Foy).
The fine dining restaurant regularly wins culinary awards and is definately worth a look. The meal we had there was fantastic.
They also have a quality bar menu.
Even if you don’t eat there go and have a pint in the bar. It sits high on the cliff top and has stunning 180 degree views of the estuary and Polruan village on the opposite side.
There are some stunning coastal walks from Fowey and you can take the ferry over the estuary for 2 quid and have a little walk around Polruan fishing village which is charming and very “Cornwall” without the tourist swarms.

I don’t blame others for not getting involved, why would you risk a altercation with a thief for a strangers bike. Such places are littered with CCTV cams and have a reasonable police presence too which obviously aren’t much of a deterrent either.

I agree with many of the comments above that there are many quality bikes in this category at the moment – actually I can’t think of one that I would exclude due to quality or expected performance issues.
I think you need to decide what you want from the bike.
Some of them out there are more suited to the extreme gnar like the transition or Niner WFO whilst others will be better suited for long epics like the tallboy or superlight.
I ride a Niner RIP9 which I love and would buy again as it suits the techy rocky trails that south Wales offers and also does long all day mountain epics which is what I mainly do.
I think you need to tell us what kind of riding you intend to mainly do to get better recommendations.

Its not safe there at all.
I parked my 456 at Pure Gym which is opposite the train station during the day between 2 – 3pm.
I had a D lock and a loop around the front wheel.
When I came back from the Gym the Steel cable (Kryptonite) had been cut through.
The bike was still there but I was very impressed to learn that someone would cut a thick steel cable in broad daylight in a busy area.

Ive been living in Cardiff for the last 2 years and loved it. Coming back home in 2 months.
I fear I’m going to lose interest in mtb when I get back to Perth .
Its going to feel so limited.
Kalamunda, goat farm, John Forest etc can all be ridden in a day.
I’ve ridden every trail centre in Wales and most published natural routes and frankly there’s no comparison anywhere in Aus.

Anyone have any suggestions where I can take my 5 year old son riding, he’s just getting a taste for off roading and I don’t want to take him somewhere so difficult that it discourages him ie – no gravel!

Why don’t you take him to a BMX track?
Lots of them around the midlands area. It will be open and the surface will be firm. You can just sit in the middle with a tinny watching him go round.

Most MTB trails are pea gravel and the few that aren’t like Jarrahdale are pretty narrow and techy. May have issues with quick riders appearing at short notice.

stouts are a bit more dependable.

Loved those but I believe they no longer make them.

I used to love my 2.3 Ignitors on the front of my 26 trail bike.
Unfortunately they only make them in 2.1 in the 29er size and I found them a bit twitchy for the rocky south Wales trails.
They were prone to sidewall tears too.
If I moved to an area with lots of hardpack, loose gravel and firm soil I’d go back to ignitors.

I run a Bonti 29-4 on the front of my RIP9 all year round.
I’m very happy with it. I hate changing tyres so it suits all conditions for me.
    I mainly ride South Wales.

    Same goes for singletrack.
Riding along a 1 foot wide or less trail is no issue normally.
Put that same trail on the edge of a large drop, or suspend it in the air with boards and its a different matter altogether.
    All mental games.

To my knowledge, Oz / Kiwi bikes are set up the British way

British bikes are set up the Australian way with the front brake on the right.
I believe this is so you can rear brake when turning right and indicate with your right arm.

Getting really boring now. The novelty has worn off.
The missus is sick of all the mud I’m dragging into the house and bed.

I’m now actually seriously considering putting a 650B wheel on the front of my 456SS.
It would slacken it just a touch more and not raise the BB up as much as if I put 2 on.
Visually you probably wont notice the difference in size so it won’t be as offensive as a 96er.
It would have all the advantages of a 650B bike and 96er without any of the negatives of a 29er!

Oh no the Robinson paper again. It is flawed. It was little more than academic trolling that made her famous.
Her work has been countered comprehensively many times over.
Her statistics were gathered in Australia and yet the Australian Medical Association disagree with her too.
Compulsory helmet legislation has been in place in Oz for 20 years and has undergone multiple reviews since its controversial introduction yet it is still well supported by the medical bodies, and now accepted by the community.
The current generation don’t consider riding without one much as most people automatically wear a seat belt when driving.

TJ share your own disturbed opinions if you must, but don’t use your position in the health industry to misinterpret the opinion of the medical body of this nation. That citation is rubbish – its little more than a poll and if you believe that then I’m going to have to stop turning my bike upside down to change a tube!
The British Medical Association supports compulsory helmet legislation.

Why you guys getting so many punctures anyway? Maybe if you guys reduced your pie intake, rode smoother, picked better lines and used appropriate pressures you wouldn’t need to remove your wheel at all.
Deliberate troll cause this thread is silly.

Are any of these tracks on private land? Can they be ridden outside the event?

I’ve noticed that alot at Llandegla. There’s a layby about half a mile up the road from the main entrance. Its always packed. Same thing happens at Afan. Shame really.
I almost always end up buying something I don’t need from the bike shops.

Crap if your riding daily – take 3 days to dry.
    Hate putting on wet shoes.
I know MTFU but it still sucks.

Can anyone tell me how the interval timing works on these watches?

strangely enough only today I got a facebook post saying the new endomondo phone app has an interval training feature that they did not have previously.

Another unhappy forerunner 405Csx owner here. Battery life too poor for riding. Bezel is a PITA to use. Wrist strap is too fragile. Don’t buy one.

    What about a Scott Genius?
6 inches front and back but both are reducible and can lockout.
Potentially you could go from an all rigid bike to a 6 inch full bouncer on the same ride.

I can relate to that completely but that was mostly due to mechanical issues.
Broke my seatpost Friday arvo. Found a replacement this morning and headed out this afternoon only to discover that I had no brakes as my brake pads were completely shot.
Got 2 miles and came home.
A weekend without riding is not a weekend.

should’ve taken his pic and posted him up here

You’d be amazed how effective taking a pic of someone is at settling what looks like a messy situation.
I was having a massive arguement with a farmer a few weeks ago about whether a bit of trail that crossed his farm was a footpath or bridlepath.
I thought it was going to get physical at a number of stages.
I pulled my camera out, took a pic of him and said that I knew where he lived and could identify him, so he should move on now or call the police.
The lengthy ugly situation was settled immediately.

Depends whether you want tyres for sick or rad.
Don’t think one tyre will perform well in both let alone chunk, gnar or fnar.

I’m certainly no legal expert but I have been advised in the past to create “email trails” for important verbal agreements.
Basically immediately after the verbal exchange you write to the other person confirming the discussion/agreement that took place.
A lack of reply infers acknowledgement and acceptance of the discussion.

Same issue here after changing to wide bars. Went from 640 to 740 Sunlines and 100 to 70 stem.
It seemed like the fashionable thing to do.
I get pain on the insides of both wrists.

I’m way too lazy to change my tyres to suit the trail that I’m riding on any particular day.
I’ll change once a year from winter to summer or vice versa but thats it.
Usually end up pinching a few tubes and breaking a few levers so find it too much of a faff to be honest.

Well obviously you’re prone to bleeding which is an extra risk you’ll carry in an accident.
If you hit your head, well at least you died doing something you love.
If you injure a periphery you could get a haematoma (blood collection).
If this is deep within a limb you could end up with compartment syndrome and have an amputation.
If its more superficial well its probably of no massive consequence.
If you cut your skin then you may bleed for a long time.
If you choose to ride my advice would be to carry good bandages.
These will control most peripheral bleeding.
I’d certainly wear some sort of identification stating that you were anticoagulated as well.

    Torque wrenches are awesome..

Do you think its due to over tightening?
You might be right which is why I’m asking.

I replaced the bolts probably 2 months ago then I read a comment by Brant in this thread so I snugged them up tighter.
I have no problem with buying a new post but I was wondering if this front/rear bolt design was prone to failure compared to other mechanisms of securing the saddle.

    Thread resurrection.
I’ve just broken the front bolt of my On-one post for the 2nd time in 12 months.
Its probably is my fault this time cause I replaced both bolts with ones I bought from the hardware store after it broke the first time.
The On-one post has a similar front and back bolt like the Thomsons do.

Has anybody had the bolts break on a Thomson?
I’m not worried about the remote chance of it bending cause I think that will probably not lead to a crash, but when the bolt goes, your arse comes down hard on the rear wheel and that could easily end very badly.
Any other ideas for a very strong post?

If you would ride a 26HT in those locations then maybe.
The “29HT behaving like a 1 inch travel FS” talk is bollocks.
    Its still a hardtail.
I would personally ride a FS anything in the places you speak of.

I really like my 456 SS. Such a great bike.
It was delivered on time, the right colour and size.
    It rides really well too.
For the price I paid I’m more than happy. :D

    I prefer anonymity myself.
Fortunately I don’t work at a desk so there are plenty of cropdusting opportunities.
A few weeks ago I was walking down the main drag in town cropdusting with every step.
Unfortunately it was much louder than I anticipated.
I looked behind and there was a homeless guy walking along who looked like he’d had a pretty rough night. He looked up at me and said “thanks mate, that’s all I needed!”.
