I’m at Cwmcarn tomorrow attempting the Strava KOM.

You have my full credit and I’ll kudos you if you can do that particularly on a Saturday.
The Cwm Carn KOM is so far out of my league its not funny.

I ride Cwm Carn and Whites regularly on a geared bike.
I’ve never cleared Cwm Carn without at least 2 dabs but I’d get pretty pissed if I dabbed on Whites.
Cwm Carn is much more difficult IMO.

    Thicker pedals, taller saddle?
    EDIT shorter saddle!

I did this ride recently which was published in an old MBR.
It was really nice but I’d do it in the dry cause it gets pretty boggy out there.

I know what its like coming back after big injuries.
I’ve had 3 big ones myself all requiring surgery and long periods off the bike.
I agree with others above take it easy and work through the mental games.
    Good luck.

Wales is stunning. Its amazing how interesting the landscape gets once you cross that border.
    So many must see’s.

Caerphilli Castle – 2nd biggest in Britain
    Llanelli beach – breathtaking location
    Swansea/Mumbles – walks, bars, restaurants
Gower peninsula – walks, swim, rides
Cardiff Bay – walks, dinner, bars
    Doethie valley – walks, ride
Brecon Beacons – climb Pen Y Fan, ride gap road, walk the waterfall trail
Must ride the Millenium Coast path – its a dedicated cycle path fit for any bike and is truely beautiful
I could go on and on

If I was mainly concerned about following routes rather than all the fitness data I’d get a Dakota with a bike mount.

Sorry to hear about this. I’ve been burnt with the Joplin and know how disappointing it is.
Is this the new generation (2012) Reverb or the first one?

If the new Fox post proves to be reliable they will have my money.
I’m sure you’d pay a few more quid to not have to go through the hassles you are now.

I jetwash my bike after every muddy ride cause my neighbours complain when I drop dirt and animal poo in the lifts and foyers of my apartment block.
I thought most animal poo was harmless.

Then my (American) girlfriend will step in and tell me measurements in cups. That one throws me, what sized cup?!

You’re right bra sizes should be measured in litres as well. Alphabetical is nonsense.

Liquid volumes should be measured in schooners which is neither metric or imperial.
Makes it much easier to determine how many standard units of alcohol one has consumed.

The recent change they’ve added where you’re notified when someone claims your KOM is asking for a comeback attempt.
Personally I only use it for climbs really.
It does make it much easier to see how your ride was against your previous times.

If the phone app added a strava alert alarm and virtual partner for the KOM holder every time you entered a segment – that would be cool!

I’ve known about scratches on my F32’s well over 12 months ago.
Ignored them with no ill effects. Quite an expensive job to change the stanchions.

Why don’t we just use nautical miles on land too?
I agree the units should be rationalised.
My sat nav uses miles, bike comp uses kms.
Its not a difficult conversion just unecessary.

“Strava Run!!!” You may be joking but this is actually happening alot in many Aus trails.
Most of the trails there are actually bidirectional and the whole debate about climbing/descending rider priority comes up too.
I’m sure many KOM’s will be broken in the next 2 months and the holder will probably keep his prize till next year.

Sounds like I should be OK with a forerunner

The problem with the forerunner 405cx which I have is the battery life and gps receiver are shit.
It frequently loses signal and the battery doesn’t last a good ride.
I would get a basic edge cycle specific one 305 etc.

The point I was making was about the deficiencies of the KOM system due to segment mismatching.
I don’t have any respectable KOMs to brag about sadly :(
When you see routes plotted by phones the distance between data points is massive compared to gps devices.
This makes timing for short segments almost meaningless.

Gps shagged then ? I was using an iphone . Couldnt fool it

I’m sorry your iphone has led you to delusions of grandeur.
Perhaps you should purchase an accurate device like the Garmin Edge 800 like I have before claiming your trophies.

hugor – that appears to be a myth or your gps is shagged

I don’t think this is a STW myth
Unfortunately a number of my KOM’s have come about this way.

If you want to claim a KOM just ride 75% of a segment real hard then turn off in any direction.
It seems a bit flawed IMO for short segments.

I did the Cheddar Challenge route last month which is published in the south west mtb guide book.
There are a few great descents there and its a very scenic ride.
Now’s the time to ride there if you ever will as the place looks like it becomes a bogfest after a bit of rain.

    Can’t believe nobody’s mentioned it.
Preheated pan with sesame oil. Drop them in briefly and turn very frequently for 2 mins max. Oyster sauce mixed through just before serving. They should be firm, crispy and very green.

You know when it gets so bad you just end up swearing out loud to the birds and bees.

Thats so funny cause I did that on multiple occasions today in the Midlands (Long Mynd). Didn’t realise others did it.
    I feel better now.

I thought bottle cages on mtb’s were for light batteries.
Do people only ride with bottles?
If you do where do you put all the rest of the stuff?

Its all relative you see. If I want I can do extra work on weekends, weeknights for extra money I can.
I don’t do this cause I value my private time, life/work balance etc.
Most of my private time is potential income lost.
As long as I am paying someone less than I could potentially earn in that time, I am saving money.
If I have to pay a mechanic half a days wages to repair my bike then I’d rather do that than lose half a day of my private time.
It would probably take me a whole day to acheive what he can in half anyhow. Its a winner for everybody.

This doen’t apply only to my bike but lots of chores that I’d rather not do. Its not meant to sound arrogant but when you already work long hours you don’t want to spend your free time doing chores that you could palm off to a professional.

I regularly work beyond the European safe hours directive which effectively means I am uninsured so yes I do

    I smell BS….

Unlike most professions medicos cannot leave when the clock strikes 5. Cant remember the last time I did.

Don’t want to derail further from the OP but he’s got a better chance of getting it right than I have.
Litigation is not something I considered TBH.
If I spent too much time worrying about that I couldn’t do my job either. I’ll take that though.

Don’t care where he does the work as long as he fixes it. He can take it home. It’s only a bleed FFS!
As for overtime and insurance I regularly work beyond the European safe hours directive which effectively means I am uninsured so yes I do!
    I don’t get a penny extra though!

Loyalty and special service is all an LBS has to offer and it what you pay for.
    Otherwise I’d use online retailers.
It’s a free desperate market and I’m sure one of the kids would have loved the opportunity to earn a few extra quid.
I dont see the problem with paying his overtime.

    hugor

I have no problem spending good money on a proper service.
My time is too valueable and my attention too limited to faff with my bike for hours.
Its the booking bit that’s got me stuffed. Perhaps they should charge more IMO.

    Slight sidetrack:
My LBS asked me to wait 10 days to bleed my brakes (damn avids!) as the workshop was full. I am well known in the store as I spend loads there and my bikes break frequently.
Obviously no regular rider would want to wait this long with our current weather, so I asked the manager if I could pay one of his mechanics cash to do it in his own time. I offered to pay him twice whatever his hourly rate at the shop is to do it in his own time.
I was quite abruptly and rudely refused.
I’ve now changed LBS as of yesterday.

I can’t see what his problem was really but I have no issue paying good money for quick and reliable service.

All beer makes most people fart but after 2 years in Wales I can confidently say that there is something really special about Brains.
That stuff makes me a social cripple for at least 48 hours post consumption and it even offends myself.
I just don’t know how people can drink it during the week.

I became single again at 39 after 11 years with one person.
Despite all the advice I didn’t try and shag like crazy or get her back.
I just did what I wanted to do which mostly evolved around friends and fitness.
She came back and we had a go at it but it didn’t work out.
I’m now happy with someone else.
Find and learn about yourself is my advice.
Don’t feel concerned that you’re confined to a life of loneliness which was my greatest fear.
Things will work out for you either way.

Not accurate but easier to know where you are.
The built in base maps have no detail at all. Only major roads and rivers and thats about it.
You will only see your plotted path as a line in a large blob of green.
If you have the maps you will be able to check where you are in relation to land features and most bridleways are plotted on them.
With or without the maps the gps will be very accurate if you want to use it to reference off paper maps.

I navigate entirely from my gps and only use maps as backup.
I use the Garmin edge 800 on the bars and a Garmin 60csx backup in the pack.
I can read maps but its a faff getting them out and checking all the time.

Love the sound of my kings squealing when I’m going quick. Really adds to the moment.
Mine have needed a few services in the 3 years I’ve owned them but I would buy them again.

    I never use propedal.
Propedal and lockouts imply poor suspension design.
    Decent bikes shouldn’t require propedal.
