The question is, did the operator refuse to take your location unless you downloaded the What3Words app?

    *Sorry*

Has she actually tried or does she just not like the idea of one? I thought the same and resisted a touchscreen for ages.

This is a very good point but good luck with that!

    Attendance AND merch.

Manchester United make 18% of their revenue from match day activities and 44% from the commercial side.

Even losing the 18% is a massive deal and cutting into the 44% would be catastrophic. Player salaries are £176m alone.

Also, you should be careful about describing “global fans” as something lesser. Those fans are as fanatical as any closer to Stretford and would happily join any organised group action to stop the revenue.

It won’t happen because the fans couldn’t organise something in a brewery and they don’t actually care enough.

The Glazers ARE rinsing the cash out of United but the majority of that cash is given to them by supporters who whinge and complain they’re powerless.

We can’t do anything they cry!

Is that a 2 quid t-shirt you’re wearing the you gave the Glazers 70 quid for?

    Yeah, but…

Fans of a club like Manchester United could instigate change by leaving the stadium empty, not buy merch and boycott sponsors. They provide the revenue and have massive power.

They don’t though because they don’t want to lose their season ticket slot and like wearing polyester t-shirts to the pub.

This shows how much they *actually* want it.

Imagine lying in a ditch with water running over you and a fractured spine and a certified paramedic/mountain guide calling emergency services and them telling him they are not allowed to accept a 10 fig grid reference .. so walk somewhere you can get a signal to download the app!

Loving the melodrama, but as I understand it, the question is around it being default for ambulance drivers and the potential for errors.

If one were to give any number of location methods to a 999 operator then they would accept them.

Implementation of a no-blame culture through an approach to actual tasks is the way forward for me.

I don’t want to go to GoApe at the weekend, as I’ve been forced to do previously.

I do want to be able to sit down as a group to share, fix and learn from all the sticky things with the job. This would lower stress, give a sense of achievement and job satisfaction. Doing these things as a team is “team building”.

Doing this is, as I like to call it….

    “Management”

How did they swap from that car convoy into the prison transport van in about 2 minutes?

How did they manage to Squeeze 27 years of prison time into the The Shawshank Redemption film, that’s what I want to know.

but also pointed out that there are multiple iterations of road names up and down the country

Compared to a system in which major roads are called a1, a2, a11, a12, a21, b1, b2, b12 etc and there are 1800 Church Lanes, 1287 Church Streets and 1110 Church Roads, it can be forgiven some sins!

Also adding a “fourth” word such as near Luton does help dramatically for clarification.

This feels a bit like an airbags are dangerous so should be banned type argument but I’ll happily be proved wrong

I think the whole 10,000 thing has been soundly debunked by now.

The notion that all it takes is 10,000 hours practise at something has been debunked but that was always a misconception from the original research anyway.

As I remember it, they tracked the hours spent practising by classical musicians already playing at high level that involved incredible talent. They then extracted conclusions from showing that the ones who practised the most, with 10,000 hours being a benchmark, being the most successful. The control factors are an absolute minefield with such a study.

That it’s been extrapolated from this study to pretty much anything goes from amusing to harmful. Yes, lots of practice helps but I’d still pick a George Best ahead of a Mark Albrighton for my 5 a side team.

Talent, or innate potential, is a massive factor. I’m a teacher and see it daily whether it’s a race across the school field or maths assessment, there are different levels of natural ability out there.

Any program that has me searching the internet to understand the script isn’t worth it for me. Why do they do that? Do they think it makes them look clever?

    I’m out.

I’d prefer TV that’s not dumbed down. Each to their own.

Definitely don’t watch The Wire or The West Wing.

    I hear Friends is popular?

If you’ve never watched LoD would you be able to start at this series and understand what was going on?

Yes, but why not start at series one anyway?

If you end up liking it then you’ll have spoilered yourself all over the place.

Haha, you’ll probably get the same cash for the Rothan.

Bikes are getting a triple use here so probs going to go new as well when starting to hit the 24 inch size!

For cordless, I’m not sure, sorry.

For corded, definitely the Wahl Balding ones. Far tighter cut than a pair of regular clippers on zero.

I actually use a separate pair of regular 20 quid Remington clippers on zero for the face as they leave a bit of stubble (and avoid making me look like a cue ball). The Wahl comes with plastic combs but I’ve not used them!

Nice, Muscat is on the list of potential next family locations. What are the trails like? (Qatar is abysmal).

Rained here yesterday for the first time in 2 months. Will probably be the last rain until September now.

I live in Doha so not sure how relevant this is.

Hair cut as short as poss

Here’s where there’s a difference with clippers. Pretty much all clippers do a 0 length when the guard is of, but that isn’t zero mm, it’s actually 1.2mm.

You can’t really go wrong with standard clippers.

If you want to go really short, ie 00000, or 0.2mm (which saves doing it so often as well as a different look), then you’ll need something a bit more specialist like an Andis/Oster with clip on blades (not combs on a fixed blade) or the Wahl Balding.

    Depends what you want, really!

Great thread. Loving the look of the Laufey for the slack geometry.

To any Orbea owners, is 135cm a hard minimum size for the 24 or are there a few cm wiggle room?

    Cheers!

I sell everything on FB now through Groups. Agree a price, they come round and see the “thing”, shake hands and done.

No commission, no PayPal, no refunds, buyer gets to see the item and is happy, no messing.

Selling through a virtual bulletin board is the way forward!

The edge Samsungs are a bit fragile. I’d always recommend getting the non Edge version of whichever one you want…

    Random update.

I’ve purchased the Wahl “Balding” clippers due to a convenient sale and not being able to buy a replacement Oster 00000 blade.

All I can say is that they are far superior to my Oster ones. If you’re getting clippers for a total zero all over then these are fantastic, and cheaper. Super efficient and tight cut. No need to go over bits again so no redness. Well done, Wahl.

Would definitely recommend and only 50 – 60 quid.

They are the number one choice for thruhikers in the US.

I’m sure you could get shoes that last longer but probably not be as lightweight, fast and comfortable whilst doing it.

Worth noting they’re not meant to be waterproof, they’re meant to drain and dry quickly. I believe there are more waterproof versions.

Go for one of the new waterproof paperwhites.

More isn’t necessary, but the paperwhite lighting is nicer and waterproofness genuinely useful, if only for peace of mind.

Get a simple flip case as well.

    In short, all a gamble

Not really. Currencies and commodities are a gamble because you’re betting the price for them is going to go up.

Shares of companies, or bonds, actively generate cash and are an investment rather than buying a thing (like Bitcoin, or orange juice futures) and hoping it costs more next week.

Share prices have increased at at overall average of over 10% for over a century.

A panama hat looks good with basically anything. Just ask scarecrows or members at Lords.

H&M do a good basic one for about a tenner.

The VW Golf of hats. Suitable for everyone.

Michael, office manager, who had 4 or 5 bottles of posh aftershave on his desk.

He’d spritz himself maybe 20 times a day with different ones. He clearly had a weird issue about projecting some kind of fancy image with the expensive bottles all pervading smell. Of course, the actual image projected was just being a weirdo.

What was funny was that everyone simply told him constantly that he was odd making him double down on his behaviour.

Agree to the change in of name but also get the address wrong. Maybe a similarly named newsagents but 50 miles away.

Then send an envelope with the words “nice try” in it and a picture of Vicki Pollard just for bantz.

Then she can have her money back no problem.

Might dissuade her from the doing it in the future.

Go the other way and advertise it.

A few A4 posters stapled to poles saying:

For Your Reconsideration is a cracking little films podcast. More about Total Recall than any Oscar winning stuff.

This American Life for brilliant storytelling and journalism. So many podcasts sound like it because they copy it.

More Or Less for a statistics and fact based approach to the headlines.

Missed Apex Podcast. About F1 and on first impressions the host is quite annoying but it’s a decent listen and is worth sticking with.

Guardian Football. Just very good. They keep it fresh by rotating good journos in to supplement Rushden and Glendenning as the presenting side.

Football Clichés. A different angle on football diving into a second layer of analysis of the analysis and language of it all.

I find it hard to listen to a post John Oliver Bugle, but it’s ok ish. Just not the same. Nish is OK but they need a heavy hitting satirist to fill the hole – it’s just a lot of easy anti Tory or Brexit swipes.

Most people drive an SUV where I live and so the don’t stick out. The Middle East knows how to do vulgar though.

They have a weird penchant for new Mini Coopers with the union jack all over them. Rank.

Also the Lambo and RR SUVs just look silly as do the new chintzy mini Range Rover Evoque models that seem to channel their inner Juke.

The SUVs that do look good in the world of the Big Car are Lexus, Patrols, non pimped G Wagon, and of course, proper Range Rovers.

Plenty of supercars which are hard to fault but easy to laugh at over speed bumps.

Oh yeah, apart from Veyrons, they’ve always been gopping.

    Onitsuka GSMs are my choice.

They seem to strike the right balance between suede NBs 574s and Vans/Adidas/Five Ten.

Look good with shorts and jeans, comfortable, ventilated, very long lasting. Caned mine for 3 years.
