It’s clear that he took a short cut.

I was on the highlighted A road route so the only shortcut would be by air!

Just remembered another very bizarre one too! My folks used to have a place on Windermere which the now wife and I used to visit regularly. Had come off the M6 at J36 and was heading alomg the A590 at a fair old rate of knots in my M3 one friday summer evening.

As we turned off where the A590 becomes the A591 at Brettargh Lodge, we pulled up being a red Micra with a Jesus fish on the back being driven by a guy with what looked like his son in the passenger seat wearing a Man U top.

My dad and I had a 5th gear challenge up Lindale Hill as he had an Impreza at the time, so I was gunning it up Lindale Hill at 100 leptons or so, I overtook a Red Micra with a jesus fish on the back and when we glanced across my now wife saw that it was being driven by a guy with a young lad wearing a Man U shirt say next to him!

Very odd indeed and possibly complete coincidence (or he had a jet pack!), but it was about 8 years ago and I remember it vividly as it freaked us both out somewhat!

    POSTED 58 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

Is there part of this story missing? Did you overtake the same car twice?

Yes sorry if it was unclear. I overtook him, was nailing it along at a fair old rate of knots and then overtook the same car about 5 minutes later with no way that I am aware of that he could have got past.

Few years later, me and my then GF come home at 11pm ish, flick lights on in hallway. Nothing happens and when I look down I see a lightbulb lying on the floor next to my feet.

The lamp it was a from was about 15 feet up and 6 feet across from where we were stood.

I knew someone that pretty much the same thing happened to: bulb out of light, unbroken on hard wooden floor some distance from the fitting (or I used to know your ex-GF).

This was carpeted so maybe it’s a common phenomenon!

My mum and dad’s house, I was about 12. All sat watching TV, my sister’s boyf nips up to the look, comes back down white as a sheet as the bath was run and full of deep hot water. No one had been upstairs for over an hour.

Few years later, me and my then GF come home at 11pm ish, flick lights on in hallway. Nothing happens and when I look down I see a lightbulb lying on the floor next to my feet.

The lamp it was a from was about 15 feet up and 6 feet across from where we were stood. Ex screams and refused to spend the night there (damn!).

Me and my sis used to have organ lessons in the dining room, and when you were playing, you could really sense someone stood behind you and we’re both sure you could see a shadow of someone in the window in your peripheral vision.

Ghostie had taste though – whenever my sister played Technotronic on here ghetto blaster, it would switch itself off! Didn’t happen for any other music.

My mates used to love to hate having sleepovers – we’d dare each other to sleep in the dining room and no one ever dared! My parents always denied there was something going on, but when we were older they confessed to various spooky experiences of their own such as clocks that hadn’t been wound suddently working and being at the corect time.

After my dad died, my mum knocked the kitchen and dining room and built an extension and ever since I haven’t felt anything, although my kids who are great sleepers, never seem to settle there.

I’d describe myself as an engineer and scientist, but I really have NFI what could have caused the above.

One of my cycling mates bought those Lakes last time they were on offer and they are absolutely useless! No idea how they can claim to be waterproof as they are neoprene so just got very cold and wet.

I think he has literally worn them once and then went back to normal shoes with overshoes on.

163mph in my old derestricted M3 on a private road in the midlands somewhere at about 1am.

202mph as a passenger h in a Ruf R Turbo at Brungtingthorpe on a vmax day about 8 years ago.

What an amazing piece of kit that was – made it seem easy!

I was quoted £20+VAT but managed to wangle a cash deal at £15 for 2-3 hours a week.

Guess it depends on location – south east likely to be higher than the scottish highlands!

My old boss had some £450+ Lupine’s about 5 years ago and the battery died after 13 months – they didn’t even offer him a discount on a replacement which is pretty bloody poor I think.

Therefore, Smudge is the default choice!

Arse – I started Karate with my 4 1/2 year old son 5 months ago and the Sensei is just brilliant with the kids. Injects humour but they all know when he needs them to be serious.

    Look elsewhere.

Hadn’t considered 3/4s as I’d assume the water will just run off them, onto my calves and then into my socks? Had assumed that I’d the trousers were full length then the water would drop onto the too or side of my shoes and away?

I was on an uplift day at the FOD last year and a mate hit a big dog and went OTB only to receive a barrage of abuse from the owner who said he was a local so had every right to be there.

Thankfully no harm done to the bike or rider.

Almost caught it on my gopro but sadly my legs had gone and I couldn’t keep up!!

I sent mine back (same issue) but was told a triple would be a while so went with a double which arrived a few days later. Very happy with it so far.

Great quality but don’t get spangly coloured allow nipples as they’ll sieze after 2 years and leave you needing a full rebuild if you buckle one….

Parking charges being introduced at the swimming pool too and a load of double yellow lines on local roads!

If you actually ever bought a day permit then the parking is technically free with the refund.

But compare that to a horse – people have them and don’t worry about depreciation. Probably cost as much to run as well. Possibly.

But one thing is for sure – one day they go to muck them out and they are dead and worthless.

Agreed, I was just trying to point out that whilst it may seem like a great idea now, and you might well enjoy it for many years, the time may come when the novelty has worn off, or you simply want to reduce outgoings so choosing sensibly (i.e not buying a new Ferrari for £140k that loses £80k over 9 years!) might make it slightly less painful should you decide to sell. If my mate had bought a 3 year old F355 Spyder for £90k, it would probably be worth £45k now so would only have lost him half as much in depreciation.

    Go for it!

I had numerous flashy-ish cars in my 20s (M3s, TVRs etc) but then had 3 kids (wifey gave up work) and bought a bigger house, at the same time as starting a business so have been sensible for a few years. All being well I might treat myself again next year (35) but will probably get something like an M3 saloon or C63 AMG so I can use it at the weekends with the kids still.

A mate of mine treated himself to a new 360 Spyder when he was 45 – he still has it now 9 years later and although he only does about 3k miles per year in it, he is now at the stage where he’s glad he’s had it, but is unsure he’ll keep it much longer as it probably works out at a pound per mile with insurance and servicing etc, never mind depreciation.

It is nice having a nice car as little financial sense as they make, but maybe get something which won’t lose much money or cost an absolute fortune to run so you can sell it without a big loss if you feel like you’ve scratched the itch.

Love it – had no punctures at all (Stans rims, Bontrager TLR tyres) in 18 months but managed to slice the tire on Sunday. Went to fit a tube and found about half a dozen thorns in the tire which would’ve all resulted in punctures usually. Fitted a tube and then got another puncture within an hour!

Will be repairing the tire and going back to tubeless asap.

They roll so much better – with identical pressure I could feel a marked difference with the tube fitted. Was quite surprising as I hadn’t noticed it as much when I first went tubeless.

hughjayteens » The 9 spd ones are slightly wider than the 10spd ones

    By 0.6mm IIRC?

Quite possibly but if you try it you see the play quite easily and having had a chain snap on me when flat out uphill and ending up on my back having gone OTB, I wouldn’t risk it!

I used a 9spd one on my 10spd bike in an emergency in the alps and it ended up giving way on a climb. The 9 spd ones are slightly wider than the 10spd ones and I think this small amount of lateral play introduces a weak spot. I swapped it out for a 10spd KMC one and it has been fine ever since so for the sake of a few quid, I wouldn’t risk it.

I have a Uvex XP100 (new on is an XP CC) which is one size fits all and have just bought a Met Kaos UL in the Wiggle Sale which seems fairly adjustable too.

Have to say that considering the Met is twice the price of the Uvex at full RRP, it isn’t anywhere nearly as well made and feels like a much cheaper item.

In two minds whether or not to send it back and just get another Uvex.

Does no-one even give the slightest shit about the environmental impact? Not even a teensy bit?

Suspect that all of the cars I suggested have far less impact on the environment that a Defender, yet if I had suggested getting one of those I’d probably have been applauded by most!

You can get the Lexus RX 350 for buttons 2nd hand. Doesn’t quite scream drug dealer/ wag/ east end gangster as much as a Q7/ X5/ Cayman/ RR Sport

Again 5 seater only sadly. Land Cruiser is on the list thought – the 3.0 D4D is an 8 seater so could be handy if we ever go for our own 5 a side team…

the kids can’t undo their own seatbelts as they are so squashed together.

Do you have some freakishly large kids? 3 normal size adults could fit in the back of a saloon type car and unfasten their seatbelts

Their car seats are all touching and have to be pulled apart with a door open to get to the seatbelt catches.

This place does make me smile sometimes!

Than you all for the valuable and not-so-valuable input. Some useful comments and food for thought!!

Now time to go and pick Tarquin up from Eton for a weekend in Rock..

Discovery 4 would have been on the list, but a neighbour has an 09 D3 and he’s had loads of issues with air suspension sagging and the transfer box has just gone. Mostly fixed under warranty but it’s been in the garage for 4 weeks this year so far. Is the D4 going to be any better?

I sold a Range Rover Vogue last year as that had endless faults and niggles, again, all initially sorted under warranty but a bill for £2k followed by another for £1k 3 months later was the final straw for a 4 1/2 year old car.

Sadly the chaps at Solihull don’t seem to have got their act together yet.

Touareg is only 5 seater sadly.

Yes some of my comments were a little tongue in cheek, but I thought my original post stated that I wasn’t interested in discussing why she wanted a 4 x 4 as I knew what sort of reactions I’d get!

Horses for courses – why on earth wouldn’t I rather my wife was driving something she wanted to drive and suited the family well.

She has been driving an 06 model Honda CR-V for the last 6 years so clearly isn’t a badge snob, it is just a pain in the arse getting 3 seats in the back and if the worst happened and she was involved in an accident, the kids can’t undo their own seatbelts as they are so squashed together.

Therefore a wider rear seat is a must, 7 seats will be handy as my mum stops with us one week in six, and my wife shares after school activity taxi services with other mums. We also live in a semi rural area so the raised driving position makes lanes easier and the 4 x 4 comes in handy when driving up verges to let tractors past and when it snows as our village is in a fairly steep dip.

If you have money to burn and must have an SUV, the Merc G-Wagen is the only one with any class, a G55 would do. Failing that an Alpina estate. X5’s may be technically excellent, but they are naff, driven by wag wannabees and wives of grafters, the Q7 is stomach churning.

I didn’t say it needed to have any class. It just needs to be higher up than a Galaxy etc, seat 7 safely and not look out of place amongst the other cars on the school run and at the tennis club…..

It is only for occasional 7 seat use. The kids are 6,4 and 5 months so three car seats is a real squeeze in a normal sized car, and when my mum comes to stay or the kids have friends over, we have to use 2 cars which is a pain.

I think it will only ever be kids in the rear seats.

If it’s coming from a lease company, it usually works our free to have metallic paint on a BMW as it adds to the residual value. I’ve leased a few and that has always been the case.

Oddly enough, white adds even more to the resale value if it’s an M-Sport model so should be cheaper still!

My mate works for BMW GB and gets a new car every 6 months – every single one has been a white M-Sport as they’re the ones the sell on the easiest and for the most money.
