What an eye opening thread! I think I'll sell my road bikes! What bikers fail to realise is how completely selfish their behaviour is.

I went on a cycle tour with my son (on a tag-a-long) this weekend and the road we were planning to use was closed. The only alternative was to do few miles on an A road race track! Bikes (and cars) were travelling way in excess of the speed limit. I genuinely feared for our lives!

Also the parallels drawn to MTB earlier in this thread are meaningless; if I go beyond my limits on the MTB the only person that gets hurt is ME!

may depend if you want to use OS maps for biking. I use an HTC HD with Memory Map and it works well. iPhone app not as good, not sure what Android offers in terms of maps.

ha – my wife had a call yesterday from a company selling "identity theft protection"; allegedly on behalf of debenhams. They refused to give her any details until she gave them a load of details (which she didn't). How stupid do these companies think us consumers are!

stucol- yeah been itching to head to this area for ages. A fair distance from home (aberdeen) but looks like a paradise of cycles, walks, beaches and bays.

Anyone take the bikes over to Islay? Half thinking about going from Port Ellen to Pork Askaig if seas calm so sprogs don't get sea sick! 2 hours each way I think.

Well have installed the free app Memorymap and it seems ok. Anyone know if the £20 app allows you to load the maps directly onto the device rather than downloading from the memorymap website?

It all depends on the application – wider means more contact with ground and more weight; both factors which in increase the effort required to rotate the wheel. Tread pattern and compound also play significant part as does the fact that there is no standard accepted way of measuring tyre width. A 2.1 from one manufacturer may be a 2.3 from another.

Just ordered a Genesis Coix de Fer[/url] for winter road use and touring.

Liked the steel 735 frame (24lbs), discs (rims won't get worn out!), comfortable geomtery and decent spec. Only modifications for touring will be a bigger cassette (12-32) to make the climbs more accetpable and different tyres. Fact it can go off-road is a bonus and will open up some interesting new routes mixing on and off road.

Planning; let people build what they want where they want. Would certainly make our town more interesting!
