Roomzzz is great – self-catering though (rooms all have kichens inc dishwashers and there’s laundry facilities on site). No floral decor and nice location right by the racecourse.

    ‘Never heard of a TERF’

Yes. Often preceded by the words ‘punch a’ or ‘burn in a fire’, TERF is a derogatory and misogynistic term used to silence women seeking to discuss self id.

‘That’s why the definitions are important and matter, women for ever have been disadvantaged due to the biological differences they have with men.’

This. If you think biology is irrelevant, if you think women don’t suffer discrimination and disadvantage because of biology, you clearly haven’t been following the news in Ireland. Not a single biological male – whatever gender they identify as – has ever died of sepsis due to being denied an abortion while miscarrying. Not one.

‘You can’t transition from a male to a female. That’s biology.’

Miranda Yardley – a transwoman – was permanently banned from Twitter for saying just that

Saying there is no such thing as race I am equalising everybody

No you’re just denying victims of racism the language they need to describe – and challenge – their oppression

    huckleberryfatt

therefore we are all the one “race”

And yet there is racism. Denying that race – or sex – matters doesn’t help the victims of racism or sexism, it merely justifies the removal of protection against such discrimination.

I take the point in that Brian going “I’m Susan now” is insufficient in and of itself to classify as TG for practical purposes

What you’re describing would be sufficient for Brian legally to become a woman. Brian wouldn’t need to change her name or her appearance or alter her body in any way. As a self-identifying woman, biologically-male Brian would be free to access women’s refuges, changing rooms, bathrooms, hospital wards, rape crisis centres, healthcare provision (eg cervical screening) and to participate in sport as a woman. If Brian commits a crime statistically she’ll do so as a woman (even if the crime is rape) and serve her sentence in a women’s prison.

    What could possibly go wrong?

Instead of the rest of us getting all judgy, how about we just ask trans people what they want, then do that?

So if a sex offender with an escalating pattern of behaviour against women transitions while serving an indeterminate sentence and demands to be moved to a women’s prison we should do that?

If self id was a threat to men’s safety we’d be having a debate about it

The actual proposed changes in gender recognition will make absolutely no difference to anyone here.

Unless anyone here’s a biological woman. The proposed changes will remove the very limited exemptions under the Equality Act allowing spaces, services, roles and activities for biological women eg domestic violence refuges, single-sex hospital wards, rape crisis centres, women’s prisons, sport and statistics.

It’s not just an issue of interest to ranting women; a number of trans women want to debate the proposed legislative changes too.

See eg Miranda Yardley and Debbie Hayton in The Times

At present, there are rules: to designate yourself female you need to live as a woman for at least two years and have your transition confirmed by a doctor … The MPs pushing for reform hope to amend the 2004 Gender Recognition Act to mean that any man who declares ‘I am a woman’ will have full access to all the rights, protections and places that women have fought for and won over the past century.

Wherever you stand on the question of self id there is a debate that needs to happen and it isn’t happening because –

‘a small, aggressive group of activists — not all of them trans, by the way — want to establish a new norm of debate: that anyone who disagrees with them, or even asks questions, ought to be silenced, sacked or both.’

Park up in Budleigh (Lime kiln cp), walk to Otterton along the cliffs, lunch at the Mill in Otterton, walk back to Budleigh along the river. All dog friendly.

The Stratford (not the Stratford Manor – it’s a bit out of the way) is nice if you can get a good deal (ace location and it does a great breakfast). The Premier Inn Waterways is great vfm (esp if you take the kids), next to the canal – and a drive thru McDonald’s – and five minutes walk from the centre of town. The White Swan is really nice esp if it’s just the two of you. I’d pick the cheapest of those!

You think if you do away with religion humans won’t have anything to fall out over? Have you met people? You’d have to do away with religion, neighbours, parking, wheelie bins, tattoos …

Arrecife is odd – the centre is a bit disappointing but there’s a great beach and behind the shops is a lovely sea inlet area with some nice eateries. Also there’s a new marina which has beautiful shops and cafes (it’s a short walk from the centre and always really quiet). And do go to the cafe at the Gran Hotel for coffee and amazing views.

There’s Lidls in PDC/Arrecife (really good for fresh fruit/veg and bakery stuff) and a Mercadona in Playa Honda (Deiland – good place to head for to stock up for the week). They’re my fave big super markets on the island. Both have good parking. Lots of little Spars and Hyperdinos in Playa Blanca but they’re quite expensive. Things to do, Timanfaya, take the ferry to Papagayo, Famara, Playa Dorada, ferry to la Graciosa, Haria, Puerto Calero (nice clifftop walk to PDC), walk or hire bikes and cycle from PDC to Arrecife stopping to watch the planes (good bike hire place at los pocillos) … with a car you’ll be able to see loads. Wear lots of sunscreen – the sun is very strong, it’s very easy to burn.

I read that about tomtom but bought one anyway (best running watch I’ve had). The app keeps getting better (and it now syncs with mfp) and the tech people are pretty enthusiastic when it comes to sorting out glitches so it doesn’t feel like a product without a future.

If you want to eat more greens you could try a fruit and veg box from somewhere like Abel and Cole. You get basics plus things you wouldn’t ordinarily buy and they send you recipe cards and a book so you know how to prepare/cook new stuff.

I stayed at Premier Suites Dublin (Leeson Street). Got a really good last-minute deal. Great location by St Stephen’s Green – and the airport bus stops right outside.

David Gartry, Moorfields. Had lasik to correct shortsightedness (-5 ish). Cost about £3.2k in 2004. No problems but shortsightedness returned (-2 ish) after a few years and corrected vision isn’t quite as good as it was pre lasik. If I had the money I’d consider lens replacement.

You can use an espresso machine to make a really nice long espresso (lungo) – like an Americano strength-wise but crema-y and less hot-watery in taste.
