Isn't stainburn a bit short? STW guide reckons only a few km of trails, now if I could fit it in as part of a larger loop that might good, or start & finish there.

    😆 @ Konabunny

I've spent a few hours tinkering too! But, touch wood a bit of prep/checking/maintenance has so far done the trick, although that may be more luck than anything else.

This place is just over the hill in Mossley, had van/mini buses from them in the past, always been fine.

I think it's mainly to do with the arc as Tom_DB says, giving a better change between cogs with greater differences in teeth number… think the slx double is 22-36 rather than 22-32 for the bottom and middle on a triple.

It also has less movement so even with a triple shifter if won't move any higher up.

No issues with mine in 8 months or so of (ab)use 😆

Two sideways facing ones with lap belts by the windows, they fold up when you need the space. the rest is just carpeted/trimmed out.

    I'm a one third owner for this….

We've had it about 6 months, it passed the MOT no worries, costs 190ish a year to tax, does high 20's to the gallon on the road, and it's great fun. Drove from Manc to Reeth in it the other weekend, no issues.

Oh, and the reg plate was already on it!

I'd whole heartedly say scratch that Defender itch!

Yeah, I picked one up yesterday from Ashton, they'd got another one left in store at about 5pm.

So far I've been balancing in the corner of my lounge and think I'll be a while before steady forwards motion is achieved. Looks pretty sounds for £35 quid.

Also got a track pump for 4.99 too. Bargain!

Hope you start to feel better soon, sounds like you've really been under the weather recently.

Don't know anyone that's been diagnosed with it before, so can't offer up any stories. But if you want to keep yourself in the bike scene whilst you can't ride so much, how about getting involved in marshalling the races you'd normally have riden? or using the downtime to brush up on your maintenance & repair… cytech course or something?

    All the best

    Have you considered these:

    Extra frame mounts?

Keep your existing pump and use the bottle cage mount thing that would have come with it I guess.

Should be fine short-term, providing the valve hole is fairly smooth and you're not sticking loads of air in them. I think one of my old bikes had 'down-sizing' thing in the rims, so they might be available from CRC or your local bike shop.

I'm about yeah, a slower shorter one would be great, I'm doing a roadie thing on sunday so would like fresh legs. drop me a mail.

I'm in Mossley, it's like anywhere, you've got good bits, bad bits, good pubs and not so good pubs… the riding is good, saddleworth area just round the corner, easy access to the peak, west yorks by bike. rossendale, hebden etc are only 30-45mins in the car.

Housing is 'cheaper' than some of the surrounding areas, especially saddleworth, I guess the main reason would be the larger proportion of smaller/terraced housing with Mossley's industrial history. There are larger houses about but apart from new builds and 80's/90's stuff they're not that common.

If you're looking and want a 'locals' opinion on house location drop me an email and I'll let you know. Or if you want a ride out and check out the scenery/pubs I could have my arm twisted too.

    Cheers

I had a day out with Lavatrax (Darren) about 6 weeks ago, it was excellent, good trails, nice hire bikes (Marin Full-Suss), and Darren's a really nice bloke too. He's based in the south of the island (Los Christianos/Las Americas area.

    I'd happily reccommend them.

Penmachno is the only one I've done so far that I keep heading back too, tried Llandegla again the other weekend and just found it full of people riding the red/black on 6" bikes in full armour… why?

Also enjoyed Gisburn over the winter, looking forward to heading back in the dry.

Had my 16" 456 for about 5 months now, it's great, a lot more capable on the downs than I was expecting, great for just hacking about out and not having to be too precious about it…

You could give this a go…. it's the route map for the Holme Valley Mountain Bike Challenge. Not a bad route all in all.

    Click for route pic.

Or as thwang said, something that includes the Wessenden descent from above holmfirth down to Marsden, that's always a good laugh.

Lived in both, never really found the living on one floor thing an issue, our's even had a full floor to ceiling lounge window, was excellent for letting light in, and never really caused me any undue worry security wise.

Oh, and we just had a Hamster and Three goldfish for burglar protection… not a sniff of trouble in the 2 years I lived there.

This could be the simplest way of doing it….

    Three MiFi

3G dongle that produces a Wireless Lan signal, mates got one for working away from home, we've run 3 laptops of it fine, speed it the same as normal USB dongles and the 3 network seems pretty good so far according to him.

I was CRB'd when I worked at the local council for working in schools etc, but never had to show the cert I got, the schools trusted the council to be employing 'safe' people.

Now I work in recruitment and our education sector can access a 'list 99' (child protection register) check online in a matter of seconds using surname and DOB. This appears to be accepted at sufficient for temporary employment.

I'm just about to start commuting 3 days a week (would like to do 5 but not doable with my job). I wonder which of these questions I'll be getting. People already think I live in the sticks because it's about 15 miles each way.

I need to start riding over that side again soon in prep for the CVMBC, don't think my legs would hack it at the moment.
