Funnily enough I was wondering if Orange were going to release it, but I couldn’t remember what the frame was called.

As to the environment bit, I don’t get peoples arguments really. Most people drive their cars for weekens away in Wales, Yorkshire, Scotland, whats the difference combining it in one???

Hundreds of Transit and Sherpa vans thundering along narrow roads and through small villages in the Lake District late at night and early in the morning on their way to and from Wast Water?

I did it a couple of years in a row back in the late 90’s. I’d just developed Type 1 diabetes and I saw it as a more of a personal challenge to me and my fitness and health. I think that after I did it the last time I was able to reflect that it is purely a physical (and driving, as pointed out) challenge that has little respect for the mountains, the local communities in the Lake District (Scotland and Wales ends do well from the food and accomodation) and the environment as a whole.

Pretty much agree with the general opinion here.

I think, in all seriousness, you are having to deal with (by proxy, for your son) Type 1 diabetes on a far more complex level than I certainly feel I have to – really do feel for you! I can only imagine the feeling of being ‘different’ at his age.

Have you thought about going on one of the diabetes.org.uk weekends Linky

…in essence the tubless ready is really no better than a normal tyre?

I suspect that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and I think that the bead on tubeless ready tyres might be close(r) to the propreitary Mavic UST bead.

Remember the bonty tyres are tubeless “ready” rather than proper UST although not sure if this to just get round the mavic patent?

No, they are two distinct systems. Tubeless ready tyres do not have totally airtight (non-porous) carcass construction and need sealant do make them airtight, and also to fully seal the bead. UST tyres are much more robust and do weigh more, but are totally airtight – you can actually run them without sealant but most folk do to seal thorns, etc. The bead that seals the tyre to UST rim is probably also covered by the UST patent.

Fifteen years now – I was 24yrs old and had just qualified as an Engineering Officer in the Merchant Navy; getting Type 1 for my 24th birthday meant I was retired on medical grounds – but working for the MoD at the time means I do receive a pension!

What ‘boot’ camp are you going to? Have been to a DAFNE one.

Best thing I ever did was go to a weekend for young folk (18 to 28yrs) with diabetes; it was a hotel in Stoke, and we drank the bar pretty much dry from what I can recall. And I pulled; the lass that was later in Pop Idol doing ‘YMCA’…

The Bontagers are not UST tyres and do not have the reinforced carcass that UST offers. I tried the ACX’s and shredded the rear on the first rocky patch I came to; I am 15st+ so that may be a factor – perhaps suited to more delicate riders?

Crikey, we’re all coming out of the woodwork aren’t we; Type 1’s that is! Me too for fifteen years now.

Best thing I’ve found for dealing with the odd low blood sugar level when cycling is a gel sachet – I like the strawberry Maxim ones. They work very quickly and, should the worst happen, someone else can squirt it into your mouth.

DickBarton; same as you I lose appetite when cycling – and it’s the next day that things can go awry.

Stans if you’re happy with tubeless; XM819’s if you want proper UST.

Nowhere near enough in a 16g cartridge to fully inflate a 2.3″ tube; it’d get it up to about 15-20psi at most. I bought one this week purely for seating 2.2″ UST tyres on my XM819 rims, and it worked a treat but I still had to use a pump to get the pressure up to 30psi or so.

DT rear hubs need a special tool to remove the drive ring nut to get at the bearing behind it – may be worth checking that the shop has the tool to do so?

    Leaking through the carcass..?

That is a bit worrying if they are the proper UST version. Have used Schwalbe Albert UST’s for over a year and they were very robust, but then they do have the ‘Snakeskin’ carcass that the NN’s don’t.

I’ve just downloaded the Conti 2009 Catalog from the website and p33 would appear to state that the 2.4 UST is ‘Handmade in Germany’ and has the BC; whereas the 2.2 UST isn’t – and hasn’t.

Maybe the BC logo is something more along the lines of this?

Hmmm… interesting! I asked Conti UK (Cambrian Tyres) last year about whether or not the UST MK’s had the Black Chilli and the reply was “They don’t have black chilli rubber on them, they do however have another very good softer rubber compound on them which grips very well in the wet!”

Also, I note that the Conti website also says Black Chili is only made at our factory in Korbach, Germany. No other tyre facility in the world has access to its secrets.

Well spotted, IATR; and I’m glad you realised I wasn’t being argumentative – just curious!

My UST 2.2s are Black Chilli…

I’d like to see photographic evidence of that! I asked Conti UK if the UST versions of the MK and RQ had the Black Chilli compound, and the answer was a definate ‘no’. The Black Chilli tyres are made in Germany, the UST tyres are made in Taiwan.

I’ve just fitted the 2.2 UST version but have only been out once. Being UST, the sidewalls should (I hope!) be fairly robust. Shame that the UST version doesn’t have the ‘Black Chilli’ compound that MK users rave about. They are reasonably narrower than the 2.25″ Schwalbe Alberts before them – way narrower than the 0.05″ numeric difference would suggest! They are, I think, quite a tall tyre and I had problems with the back of my Motolite getting clogged with leaves and twigs. Initial impression is that they do roll faster than the Alberts.

There’s a Firefox extension called Download Helper that will download video content and also convert to .avi files for playback at your leisure. Can be handy for video files that look good but are clunky to stream.
