Schwalbe tyre names – yes, there are plenty of alliterative ones, but off the top of my head there are/were other “name” tyres that aren’t/weren’t – “Hans Dampf” and (showing my age a little) “Fat Albert”, and that’s just tyres I’ve used off the top of my head. More recently, there’s the “Eddy Current” too, I’m sure probably others… :P

Does the head angle on that Sonder look slack because we are used to seeing suspension forks with dropouts in front of the stanchions?

…not to mention a bunch of offset built into the crown

On the rare occasion I’ve paid the extra for next day delivery from CRC, the courier has managed to keep to their end of the deal, though in each case it seemed to take CRC several days longer than normal to pick the item, pop it in a box or bag and despatch.

Please show me the paragraph that says the odometer is tested and has to be working.

This would be the relevant section:
    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/7-other-equipment
The odometer doesn’t need to be working, but… Easiest way to disable the odometer is to disconnect the drive cable – either at the back of the speedometer, or at the sensor/drive gear at the gearbox. Doing this would also disable the speedometer (edit)- which *does* need to be working (endedit)

From previous experience, that’s what the timing slips will show – regardless of which event/category entered. There may be some differences between how they work out the finishing order (e.g. results based on overall elapsed time or aggregated stage times), but i’d agree that the website isn’t completely clear on this. I’m unlikely to ever be troubling the podium, so it’s a total non-issue for me.

The timing slip usually gives an overall elapsed time and individual stage times – I think an aggregated stage time also

First up – hope the surgery wasn’t too bad and you’re recovering well.

No advice on PICCs, but don’t underestimate how sideways even “just” preventative chemo can be. I had a minor cancer 7 years ago which was surgically removed. After the worst of the post-op hernia risk had passed, I’d just started getting out riding a bit when I received a single round of preventative chemo. Had that on the Monday and felt generally fine – even riding the following weekend (i.e. 5d and 6d after chemo) – up until the Friday the following week (i.e. 11d after chemo). I just about managed to get out of bed to use the toilet and get food and drink that weekend, but that was about as functional as I got. Never felt so utterly wiped out before or since. It was well into the following week before I was feeling halfway decent again.

There were moorland fires in 2019 – can’t recall if Saddleworth or Marsden Moor – possibly both? Either way, it feels like there’s at least one moorland fire somewhere in the Pennines most years in relatively recent history. And, as noted in the article, often started by barbeques

So views please…. humbuckers for a telecaster build.. is it irongear or are the cheaper options (Vanson, Warman, Wilkinson) worth a try? looking for something in the middle not thrash metal.

Haven’t tried their humbuckers, but have been very pleasantly surprised by the set of Tonerider pickups I put in my old Korean Strat last year (Classic Blues, in case you were wondering), good value at ~£80 for a set. Humbuckers seem to be a little cheaper for a pair with exposed bobbins, or a little more expensive for a pair with covers

Ummm… Isn’t the Prodigy gig at Victoria Warehouse (in Trafford). Warehouse Project isn’t a venue, but a series of gigs/club nights that has taken place at various venues over the years, currently Mayfield Depot (adjacent to Piccadilly). Warehouse Project *has* been hosted by Victoria Warehouse in the past, but not for many years.

    Hopefully a basic question.

    Wrong end of the scale.

    Well played @GHill

I’m 5’11 and ride a large Tempest v3, though did drop the stem from the standard 100mm to a 90mm. Previous bike was an large Pinnacle Arkose, which was the v2 frameset that ran from around 2017 to 2020(ish) until the Arkose range got split into D (dirt) and R (road) sub-ranges. I think I’d feel awfully cramped on a medium…

I didnt say criminal barristers, and neither did the OP, you introduced it.

As the strike being referred to is by members of the Criminal Bar Association, it’s kind of implied though?

@fatmax – thanks Fraser, please also pass on thanks to Gary and the rest of the cast involved in making the event such an event. A pleasantly audax-y feel with that sense of shared experience and camaraderie with the other riders that’s often missing from events these days. My first time, but hope to make it back again in future.

Our main water pipe isn’t that deep!

    Victorians worked to different standards.

They also didn’t lay many HDPE pipes… ;)

Pipes that experience constant flow – like a typical water main – are less likely to freeze than a spur that spends most of the time sitting full of water with no flow passing. The pipe diameter plays a part too – smaller pipes are more likely to freeze.

In years gone by, there was a half marathon across Morecambe Bay – may still be for that matter. I did it in either 2016 or 2017. That year – and possibly for a year or two beforehand – they ran a fat bike challenge over the same route – I think it was something like 15 minutes head start – and like a fool I entered the half marathon. They’d had to do a hurried replan of the route as the sands had shifted – if I recall, we set out from Silverdale rather than Hest Bank as intended, and ran out into a headwind for quite some distance – probably around 8 or 9 miles before turning and heading back to dry land, and onwards to Flookbrough airfield.

As others have commented, it’s never really properly dry across the bay – the rivers that discharge into the bay keep flowing at low tide, and I can recall wading through with water a good way up my thighs within the first mile or so. I’m pretty sure I recall some of the fat bikers were having issues with floatation – not the good “not sinking into the sand” type, but the “trying to keep tyres on river bed” type.

Strictly, the answers are no, n/a and n/a. I’d suggest that because dual air means you can set pressure in upper and lower chamber independently, you have an option to tweak the way the spring behaves by fiddling with air pressure ratios. I haven’t attempted it, but it *may* be possible to retrofit a new air top cap from a more modern 32mm stanchioned fork (e.g. Reba, Revelation from a few years back before they went 35mm, SID SL, etc…). Check the threads are suitable before you try and fit it and screw your forks up though…

Get more bikes, thereby ensuring that there’s always at least one that will be in need of a little TLC. This then removes the need to pack it away, as it’ll always be in use. You’re welcome :)

OP – have you bought the relevant map regions (one time purchase, whole world pack at full price is around £30 but usually available cheaper)?

I quite like the simplicity of selecting “round trip” or one way, select start point, select end point (if required – obvs not required if specified as round trip), select relevant ride type (tour/gravel/MTB/etc…), add a handful couple of points along the way and leaving it to sort out the bits in between automatically. I will acknowledge though that it can be a bit of a pain convincing it to route you a specific way, especially if some of the route isn’t entirely above board.

Only thing I can think of is that “something” has filled a cylinder with liquid and on trying to start it’s hydrolocked, which would destroy it.

Yeah I agree with that but how the hell does that happen unless it’s been in a flood? Even if you left the bonnet off in the rain.

A failed head gasket allowing coolant to leak into the cylinder might do it?

Nice work there @Merak – have considered one of these to ease myself back into the hobby (raced 1:10th buggies late 80’s/early 90’s).

A question though… Polycarbonate/Lexan shells usually get painted on the inside (or they did back in the day). 2nd pic shows red all over, 3rd and 4th pics show the added blue highlights on the nose and tail – how have you done the blue highlights if you painted red first as 2nd pic suggests?

Just have to adjust the neck angle (one turn of the micro tilt) and adjust the saddles accordingly.

Scratches head… Puzzled by this. Whilst I can see that if adjusting saddles, you may need to adjust the neck angle, I can’t quite follow why the saddle heights need to change (and both changes likely to result in need for minor tweaking of intonation).

Assuming saddles need to go up in order to get satisfactory break angle over the saddle?

Have bought and sold at the velodrome in the past – they usually hold one in February/March and there used to be another one later in the year August/September. The spring one can’t happen this year due to velodrome works.

Pretty sure the Pop Up Bikes events still run – usually first Saturday of the month. Quick check on Facebook suggests there was one just last weekend…

If you’re struggling to get comfortable, then possibly worth it. As you have a baseline that you find comfortable, I’d try replicating the position and setup as a first step.
    Same saddle on both?
    Set at same angle?
Set at same measurements saddle to bars, both length and height?
Is it just as simple as you move about on your road bike a bit more than you do on the trainer? Even if it’s just a brief change of position such as coming off the saddle to stop at junctions on road that doesn’t happen on the trainer

Are they Crosslights or Crosslight HD’s? The series numbering of the HD’s doesn’t align with the non-HD’s, so Crosslight HD (v1) = gen 4 Crosslight, Crosslight HD v2 = gen 5 Crosslight.

Not sure if the Exploded Views help – the brake/dropper (RX810-LA) appears to have a couple of additional parts, but not clear how evident this would be without the lever in your hand. Links to the diagrams below anyway…

I’m not the gardener who will be using this – so this may be obvious to a gardener type, but why is nothing planted in the ground in a greenhouse?

Also not a gardener, but I’d suggest that most things grown in greenhouses are either relatively short-lived or get moved outside once established – either way, growing in pots keeps the roots contained.

I suspect whilst greenhouses tend to see higher air temperatures than outside, the ground temperature is fairly consistent with outside. If trying to germinate seeds or whatever, the high air temperature (and direct sunlight) will more easily warm the volume of soil air in a pot than it will the entire base of the greenhouse (which will then tend to leech out into the rest of the garden).

Interestingly, the reverse lights aren’t part of the MOT, so you could always just run that wiring to a dash switch instead of the gearbox switch and put red bulbs in.

Oh really? The MOT Inspection Manual says different (for cars first used on or after 1st September 2009, anyway):

I like WTB Cross Boss (700×35) as a good allrounder – my reservation would be that the tread blocks are pretty close so they may not clear too well if your local mud is heavy clay. Local muds around here are more sand, grit and peat, so it’s generally a non-issue for me.

Another one using ACI Alpina’s from Cyclebasket, though I think they only come in even sizes so the 273’s mentioned in the OP might be a problem. Either 272’s or 274’s should work in most cases depending which side of 273 you calculated.
